Strato V black screen and audio cutout issues

So it turns out my issue is actually being caused by my Apple TV - it’s seemingly emitting a CEC off command when it’s already in standby mode. Thanks @J.Green for the tip!

We disconnected the Apple TV, blackout went away.

Reconnected Apple TV, blackouts came back.

Turned off CEC on the Apple TV, blackouts went away.

Is disabling Sleep an alternative? I've had multiple folks work on my equipment and that's one of the first things they check: Sleep After NEVER

Ha, I was having the same problem with my LG OLED always shutting down when I was watching movies on the Kaleidescape. At first I thought I was having an HDMI cable problem but I finally found the cause: In the Apple TV's settings under Home Theater Control, there's a setting letting the Apple TV control your TVs and receivers. I just turned it off and the problem was solved.

Oh crap! My V had been rock solid without any of the blackout or audio dropout issues until I got the latest 10.20 update. I was watching the DV version of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens and about 1hr. 30 min. into the movie, the scene where Rey uses her Jedi mind trick on Daniel Craig's stormtrooper setting her free, it started blacking out so bad (about 6 times in succession) that I couldn't get through the scene.

Kaleidecape V > Pixelgen HDMI cable > Integra DRX-3.4 receiver > LG 83" OLED. All Kaleidescape settings at default.

I hope the next update comes sooner than the last one, I'd rather not wait 4 months for a fix.

Same here never had any issues with 10.19. Since 10.20 mine V having audio drops which are so random. Hope new update will come soon even if it gonna take 3-4 months at least give us option to roll back to previous version 10.19 for now.

If you haven't already, please raise a support case by emailing support@kaleidescape.com. In addition to the list of equipment and the symptoms of the problem that you've posted here, please mention this forum thread and that I have asked that your support case be escalated to Engineering.

Are the contrast flicker/color issues in the other DV thread also being looked at?

Thanks John. I emailed support this morning and they've already gotten back to me and have escalated my case - I appreciate their quick response.

I must say my patience is beginning to run a bit thin, it now seems like I can’t get through a single movie without audio drop outs or audio just quits. Just purchased ‘Fall Guy’ and at about 1:42 audio quits, have to back out of the movie and resume to get it back. I can see on the Trinnov that the audio data is gone. The problem seems worse now than it was. I also have been having more ‘Failure to read’ issues.

What is your setup? I see in your sig, but which model of Alt16 (eg HDMI board)? Assume V to Alt16 and then output to your Sony display? What does Alt16 exactly show? Did you get a screenshot?

Alt 16 about a year old, does not have the newest 2.1 board. And yes to the chain as you quoted. Alt normally shows the audio format such as atmos, dts, pcm etc., when I lose the audio the format label disappears indicating no audio being received. HDMI cable is 3m same brand that K provides. Don’t recall any audio problems before switching from the C to the V. All V settings on default.

Seems like a pretty straightforward setup. If you are using Auto on the Alt16, try using the exact listening format (Dolby, etc.) or Native. Not sure it would help, but did awhile back for my setup when I ran into issues. I don’t have a V though….

I’m far from a Trinnov expert but ‘auto’ has been working great and I don’t see how changing from auto would correct issue. No audio bitstream is just that. Don’t want to be changing audio format on the Alt16 every time I put in a different movie.
I have sent a ticket to K.

Does your Sony TV support eARC? Maybe you can try Strato V -> Sony TV -> Alt16. Try unplug/plug the HDMI connections a few times in case they are loose or oxidation has developed.

Yes it does but that feeds data from the Sony to the Alt16, never have these issues from Netflix or DVD source to Alt16, it just the V where the audio drops are happening. Replaced a blue jeans HDMI cable with Pixgen cable but no help.

Just watched the original Terminator movie in DV & Atmos and the recent 10.20 update seems to have done the trick. Zero drops! Strato V direct to a Sony Z9K TV with audio eARC'd to a Marantz AV10.

No contrast variability either outside of ever-so-slightly lifted blacks - a known issue with many Sony TV's in DV mode. Small price to pay for how good it is at all other facets of image processing.
Soooo...not quite as good as I hoped. We've been watching Marvel movies on the V in DV and have experienced a monster full 3-second audio drop during Iron Man (during the press conference at the end), zero issues with Iron Man 2, and had a mini-stutter mid movie then another 3-second audio drop at end of Thor (when he drops the shield prior to confronting the destroyer). Never lost video though...it kept truckin' when the audio took a break.

Also, blacks were not lifted on these titles - no change to the config after watching Terminator.

Also watched The Incredible Hulk in HDR on my C and of that was trouble free (of course).

There have been no more posts here since Dec. 23rd - does this mean that the Audio cutouts have now been fixed?

If not, and for those who still have them, is this only with Dolby Vision downloads, or does it happen with SDR or HDR10 movies? I have a Projector, and a madVR Envy Extreme, so I would not be downloading or viewing Dolby Vision content (possibly with rare exception if that's needed to get the Atmos track). So if these are Dolby Vision issues only, that would be important to me.

I ask because I am once again considering a Strato V to 'dip my toes' into the KScape ecosystem, having (somewhat) reconciled myself to being okay with the 1080p UI, but if audio glitches and/or other problems are ongoing, I may choose to wait a while. The last thing I want to deal with is troubleshooting problems associated with what is promoted as the premiere theater source.

I’ve watched a lot of movies and some tv since the December update and I have only had audio drop out since. It was in Desolation of Smaug during the barrel river rapids sequence at around 50m when the one dwarf goes to open the gate. Couldn’t reproduce it when I rewound though. Haven’t had interop issues either.

The one big remaining issue is that some DV movies have some errors. Disney movies, and at least so far it has been Disney for me, have desaturated colors, specifically red. It kind of looks like it’s in Rec 709/gamma sometimes instead of PQ/Rec 2020. But that’s already being investigated.

I also watched the Equalizer trilogy last few days and Equalizer 2 still has a ton of brightness fluctuations in DV all throughout the movie, while EQ3 does not.

These brightness fluctuations are also happening with the DV version of "Smile 2", but not as often. I reported it to K support, and they wanted me to give them timestamps. I didn't want to watch it a second time just to give them timestamps. I think it's their job to watch it and find the issue themselves. In fact, they should watch all new releases to check for these types of issues before releasing them to the store.
