Is this (Sound of Music) the new restoration from the 8K scan promised for the 60th Anniversary Release or is it the 4K version made from the 2015 scan?

I'm sure the 4K is - but this is just an added Atmos track to the HD version already in the store.

I did not watch the previous version before I updated. I watched a couple of minutes in the beginning on the new HD download and it looks really great. In fact it looks fantastic and it's "only" in HD. But last time I saw a clip from this movie was on my Laserdisc box of the movie so I have that as reference as this HD being fantastic. Looking forward upgrading to 4K and see this movie again.

I have both the HD and 4K version. The 4K version has significantly better video than the HD version. It was recently remastered and it is outstanding.

I'm sure the 4K is - but this is just an added Atmos track to the HD version already in the store.

I believe the Blu-ray packed with the new 4K UHD Blu-ray is the same old HD master with 7.1 audio. The Sound of Music in HD with Atmos audio appears to be a digital exclusive.

Yes, the 4K version is absolutely the new scan.

The confusion is due to the fact that your initial inquiry was in response to an "HD Update" post. So, everyone has been talking about the HD version on K, which looks like the older release but now has the audio of the new release. As stated, this appears to be digital-specific as the physical disc package simply includes the old HD disc with 7.1 audio alongside the new 4K disc.

But the new 4K SDR/HDR/Dolby Vision version is absolutely based upon the new assets produced for the new disc set.

[OCD2]

For anyone interested, IMO the new 4K rescanned version of The Sound of Music is phenomenal. A little bit of appropriate grain especially on light backgrounds but otherwise visually outstanding.

I'm not a Disney fan for a number of reasons but they obviously applied their best people and techniques to this project. The video is incredible for a movie this old and the Atmos is also markedly improved although not certain if the bass is as deep as on the separate CD sold 15 years ago. Nevertheless, for anyone who enjoys this movie this version should be a must buy.
