KEAOS (Software) UPDATES

If I download movies in 4K DV, will those downloads also play on a "normal" Strato C / Strato S players? Or do I need to download both DV and 4K HDR versions?

Is it not just replacing your HDR movie? There’s no way someone can afford to double down on terras?
It appears that if your plan is to go Dolby Vision, even for part of your system, then the best long term solution is to replace all of your Stratos/Strato Cs with Strato Vs. Obviously not an option if you’ve got Premiere equipment, but that’s how things look right now.

A Strato C can move for roughly $2k, a Strato V is $4k, ~$2K upgrade. At less than 200 double downloads of DV + HDR titles you’re filling a $10k Compact Terra. Math says Strato C goes bye-bye.

This is crazy , if I use Apple tv the movie plays in DV or HDR , if I rip the movie it regersters and plays in DV or 4K HDR on my projector.

When you play on AppleTV, the provider is storing two versions of the film on their server and streaming the file your device/system calls for. Same with Kaleidescape, except you own the server and the quality is a lot higher.

Correct. And in the case of a Blu-ray Disc, as described in the big Strato V thread, those discs use Profile 7, which contains a backwards-compatible HDR10 core. That profile depends on hardware that is specific to Blu-ray players, and unavailable in suitable chips designed for other applications. So we use Profile 5, which does allow conversion to HDR10 by Strato V, but is not backward-compatible with the older players.

kOS 10.20.0-25546 Release Notes

We have begun the rollout of the latest version of kOS for Strato systems. This rollout will progress in phases and should be complete by early December.

Strato V Improvements
With this release, we have implemented several features and bug fixes for Strato V customers.
  • Download Progress Indicator: Movies that are downloading to a Strato V-connected system will now appear on the left side of the New collection with an indication of download progress.
  • Cover Art Scaling Improvements: The method of displaying movie cover art on Strato V has changed to improve overall crispness and clarity on the onscreen display.
  • Trailers: Trailer playback is now enabled for Strato V in the onscreen movie store.
  • Control 4 Driver: An updated Control 4 driver is now available for Strato V on the support site.
  • Bug Fixes: To improve overall playback performance, bug fixes have been implemented to alleviate issues stemming from HDMI interoperability, audio drops, and trick play (play, pause, fast forward, rewind).

System Activation on the Mobile App
Customers purchasing new Kaleidescape systems may now register directly via the mobile app, in addition to the browser interface. (Available for iOS by early December, with Android support coming Q1 2025)

Performance Improvements and Fixes
We have made several behind-the-scenes improvements to enhance performance, including:
  • Improved server performance for systems with large movie libraries
  • Terra, Terra Prime, and Strato V will keep their databases more up to date when idle
  • Terra and Terra Prime servers will now keep hard disks active to improve overall system responsiveness and performance, enabling movie guide information to be always up to date
  • Bug fixes

Thanks, John and the entire Kaleidescape team! Appreciate all the technical work that goes into these great systems. Have a great Thanksgiving!

This is great, so many nice updates.

This is the only one that surprised me though
  • Terra and Terra Prime servers will now keep hard disks active to improve overall system responsiveness and performance, enabling movie guide information to be always up to date
Is that (slight?) improvement in responsiveness worth these big servers keeping their hard disks running the whole time? Seems a big increase in cost of power for what might be a slight increase in performance on occasion. Is that something that a user can choose to enable/disable if their priority is more about idle power usage?

Awesome! My system updated and I'm heading down right now to check the UI rendering quality and options! Video coming ASAP on the channel. I also see that Scripts were added when you to the web/IP UI on your system versus having to use /scripts (unless that was already there and I missed it before).

Anyone that got the update, can you please check Dolby Vision to see if the interop improvements fixed that too?

Cover Art Scaling Improvements: The method of displaying movie cover art on Strato V has changed to improve overall crispness and clarity on the onscreen display.
Just a friendly reminder to those who may not have seen the "Sneak Preview" thread -- the cover art improvements are actually going to be partly in this new kOS release and partly in the December headend software release.

The kOS side will improve how the player handles scaling cover images for display. The headend side uses a different algorithm for transforming the master images to prepare them to for download to Strato V. Depending upon where you fall in the roll-out cycle, you may notice an initial improvement followed by further improvement in December, or you might see the combined improvements in a single step.

For example, @Techthusiasm, as a dealer, is in the earliest update group, so he will see the kOS piece first followed by the headend piece in December.

Additionally, just to set expectations: library covers will look better immediately after the player updates. Store covers need to be re-downloaded, and so if you rush to the player to look at it right after it updates, you might briefly notice no improvement on covers for unowned content.

Finally, regarding Scripts in the Browser Interface, that's visible on dealer systems to facilitate creating demo scripts for showrooms. It's still available via the direct URL for customer systems.

I just popped down into the theater to take a look. Definitely the UI is improved looking at it compared to earlier pictures I had before this update. I can confirm that setting the use external scalar allows the UI to output at 1080p.

This is a welcome change, and it did look even more improved using the madVR Envy to scale the 1080p to 4K to the projector. I'll be leaving it in that setting. Certainly the C, by my memory and pictures, does still look better in the UI, but this is definitely improved.

Will be interesting to see the coming back end improvements. @MikeKobb wouldn't that even make covers improved on the C as well?

I can also confirm that my C4 control of the V wasn't working via my Halo. Must need that new driver or some configuration update/tweak.

The new Strato V driver is still in the queue for certification by Control4 so it's not in their online database yet. If you have access to Composer Pro and can program your system yourself, you can grab the updated Control4 drivers (for all of our players) from our support website at:

i take it from this there is no way to manually trigger an OS update?
Correct. Our software updates are released to batches of players in stages, both to manage infrastructure load and also to ensure that if there are any issues that weren't caught in our QA process, we have a chance to find out about them when the audience is still limited and stop the roll-out. This is also why we start with employee and dealer systems.
