KEAOS (Software) UPDATES

I'm not sure how Control4 related it is, but Monday morning (looks to be when my number came up) the network got hosed over royal (or at least it seemed that way - only really tried pinging the premiere servers, since the disc vaults were screaming murder.) Power cycling the network devices did nothing, but I managed to go in and update the network settings on the servers to add an outside DNS server, and that appears to have gotten them to behave after they rebooted - before that they'd alternate between responding or not to ping.

SR260 has been stuck in hourglass mode since last night (Tuesday,) but the app works okay (aside from being touch-only,) so maybe there's lingering affect - haven't rebooted the controller yet.
Control4 uses a protocol called "SDDP" to autodetect supported equipment on your network. When Strato V was first released, it advertised itself on SDDP as a Strato C in order to allow existing Control4 systems to discover, connect to, and control the device since a Strato V specific C4 driver did not yet exist.

As of kOS 10.20.0, Strato V now correctly advertises itself on SDDP as a Strato V and thus, the Strato C driver stops working.

The fix is to replace the old Strato C driver with the new Strato V driver (which is can be downloaded from our Support website at https://support.kaleidescape.com/support/article/Control4-Control-System-Guide. The driver is still working its way through Control4's certification process so it is not yet available directly from Control4 but hopefully will be soon.

The new driver also adds support for reporting when you are playing DV vs HDR10 which was not supported with the old drivers and has been updated to check for and use the latest supported version of the control protocol (which the old driver also didn't do).
Update: The new Control4 driver for the Strato V from the Kaleidescape website restored Control4 functionality. Apparently, Control4 mistakenly finds a Strato V driver, which in fact, is the C driver. Therefore, as @J.Green indicates, the new kOS Strato V update requires the new driver from the K-Scape website, which is not yet available from Control4.

I'm only running a C, so it should be perfectly happy on the existing driver. Was also odd that it seemed to throw a kerfuffle on the premiere system (not that pinging the Terra was any more reliable) despite there not being an update on that side, but figured maybe there was some quirky little thing in the Costar protocol that got borked.

Anyone else getting audio dropouts with the new update on a Strato V? I just got the update last week (Thursday?) and about 1 minute after the initial HDMI handshake with the processor, the audio goes offline and then reconnects. The first one is repeatable, then other dropouts occur randomly. Doesn’t happen with other sources. The update also broke my Home Assistant automation of the K-scape, consistent with the folks using Control 4.

Just a friendly reminder to those who may not have seen the "Sneak Preview" thread -- the cover art improvements are actually going to be partly in this new kOS release and partly in the December headend software release.

The kOS side will improve how the player handles scaling cover images for display. The headend side uses a different algorithm for transforming the master images to prepare them to for download to Strato V.
The headend tools to further improve our cover art image quality have completed qualification and have been deployed to our production headend. Strato V owners should see additional cover art image improvement rolling out this week as the images are reprocessed and pushed out in media guide updates.

I'm sure the answer is "it depends".... More has happened recently in support of the launch of their new Strato V. My guess in any "normal" year (whatever that is), likely 2-3 updates.....

As a Strato V owner, should I have seen another update since this post in mid January? My last update was December 11th.

The tools rollout cited in the quote you posted was for our headend and was not a kOS update. If your Strato V is running 10.20.0-25572 then you have the latest released version of kOS.

That's the one I'm running. Thanks for the clarification.

Howdy folks! In addition to the Strato M launch today, we're also beginning the rollout of new kOS versions: 10.21.0 and 8.14.0.

10.21.0 includes:

Support for Strato M
With this release, we have added support for the new Strato M movie player. Strato M is our new entry-level movie player for residential, marine, and commercial theatre systems. Strato M works on its own or as part of a larger Kaleidescape system. To learn more, visit our product page.

New UI Features

  • Replay with subtitles: For Strato, rewinding or using the Replay command to go back less than 60 seconds will automatically enable subtitles until the point of rewinding is reached.
  • New “My Movies” tile: In the Strato V and Strato M collections menu, a new “My Movies” tile has been added to allow customers to browse movies they own, even if they are not currently downloaded to the system.
  • Support for Rotten Tomatoes “Verified Hot” rating: Rotten Tomatoes recently introduced a “Verified Hot” feature that indicates whether a movie is beloved by audiences. This will complement the “Certified Fresh Tomatometer” badge on the onscreen display.

Playback Improvements
We have improved overall playback stability for Strato V. This includes throttling movie downloads to 500Mbps during movie playback when used in standalone* mode. This is to ensure the quality of playback during movie downloads. When grouped with a server, downloads remain unaffected during movie playback. *The throttling of movie downloads also affects Strato M in standalone mode.

HDMI/HDCP Interoperability Improvements
For Strato V and Strato M, improvements have been made for legacy HDMI devices (such as AVRs and TVs) that only support HDCP 1.X. Additionally, the default video behavior has been changed to “minimize display mode changes” to provide a more robust experience out of the box for the majority of users. This will affect new installs or players that have been reset to factory settings.

Performance Improvements and Fixes
We have made several behind-the-scenes improvements to enhance performance, including:

  • Terra/Terra Prime performance and stability improvements
  • Added player support to enable playback of remaining HD library content on Strato V and M (after conversion of those titles to new format are made available)
  • Bug fixes

I'd like to take a second to drill down a little bit on that next-to-last bullet point, about the HD content support. As I think everyone knows, we've been hard at work converting our HD content library to be playable on the Strato V (and now Strato M) platform, and the large majority of content has been converted. The last batch of titles required the addition of a new feature to the playback engine on our players, and that new feature is included in the 10.21 release on Strato and Alto payers, and in the 8.14 release on M-class Premiere players and Cinema One 2nd Generation.

What this means is that once the kOS software rollout is complete (which typically takes a few weeks), you'll start to see a significant number of HD updates released as the players will be ready to handle that content.

(8.14 is primarily a release to support these updated HD playback features, with a handful of bug fixes as well.)

Strato C customers have been asking for “My Movies” for years. I guess we still don’t get that feature.

Would love to learn more about this. Maybe it's just a shortcut to the My Movies section of the K Store?

If it launches a Poster Wall with all of your movies with the ability to play the downloaded ones, then I could see some C owners' heads popping. ;)

I'm very much looking forward to the HD player updates. My collection has been sitting at 53% updated since December.

When does the update come out?
It has started rolling out to dealer systems as of today. The release process is done in stages, starting with employee and dealer systems and then customer systems in batches. This helps to ensure that we are able to catch any issues that might not have showed up during our testing process. It generally takes on the order of three weeks to roll out to all customer systems.

Could you go into drilling into this more? So, are you adding a new standard not currently on the old or new platforms, as an extra option for those that cannot be converted the previous newness? Given the change affects both sides of the house, I'm curious what risk there is to the old school players and existing content.

Going to have to see how I feel on the subtitle skipback. Sometimes it's helpful and sometimes it just gets in the way. Increasing access to the jump-back feature (like adding to Second Screen) would've been a more important improvement to me.
