Unifi Network 9.0

Not sure if you have access to a Linux PC on your network...but something to try is:

I found this to be a more reliable way of testing ISP speeds that using the speedtest guis.

This reports in MB/s...so have to do some math. If it flucuates alot ...like dropping to 10-20 -vs- 90-125 then your issue is not specific to K...but large files in general.

wget -O /dev/null http://speedtest.tele2.net/10GB.zip

I have a Mac. 😬 I’ve been using WiFiman and the speed testing within the UniFi app which gives me live internet and network throughput (depending on the part of the system that I test) and also separate average download/upload speeds. I haven’t been using the Speedtest app.

Again, I appreciate all the thoughts.

Ultimately, I worry that this is a Comcast XFinity traffic shaping/throttling issue. When I have time, I’ll try a VPN. It’s not the end of the world if this can’t be figured out or corrected. I just find everything very peculiar and potentially correctable with some more investigation.

I am interested to see what your VPN results are. :)

Well, I exchanged my XFinity XB8-T out for a new one (same model) from the store today. I set it to bridge mode as before. Download speeds still fluctuate (though less) on live throughput readings but are much faster on average now (n=2). I have a fan blowing on the Xfinity XB8-T due the possibility speeds could be slowed due to overheating (nothing in the modem error log, though).

Overall, my impression is that XFinity gear is low quality and not built for sustained downloads of large files before having issues with throughput. Unfortunately, for unlimited plans, XFinity will no longer let you use your own modem unless you pay a $30/month fee. Interestingly, the XB8-T is free and without a monthly fee. It seems that their internet service is not longer the product but rather customer data which is harvested by their devices and sold to advertisers.

It’s yet to be determined whether these improved download speeds are durable. I’m still going to try that VPN hardware device between my Strato E and my network switch to see if that affects how my download traffic is handled by XFinity,

Update. I purchased a Terra Compact 8 Tb HDD server. So far It seems that the Terra Compact has markedly increased download speeds, consistently in the upper 700s-800s Mbit/s range. I do wonder if the Strato E has more limitations than advertised as a standalone device.

For my Unifi system setup I found, what I think, is a great source of setup information and tips for understanding and using the Unifi software:

Specifically, these links below provided me, with my equipment, the how to and explanation of how to set up and use Unifi:

Hopefully, some of this information may help you too!

Lately getting pretty erratic d/l speeds from K.

Unifi APP, Wifiman. Tested downloading large files from internet on my linux laptop plugged into the same port the Strato is and get the advertised 1Gbps speeds. Something definitly going one with K and my ISP

Below is the latest update of my download speeds. Again, they’ve been consistently faster since I gave in and bought a Terra compact 8 Tb HDD. My ISP plan is 1 Gbps but it’s up to 1.15 GBPs with speed tests on my laptop and iPhone.
