Movie Updates

So "The Heat" (Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy) was just updated. I noticed the download says "Theatrical Version," but the cover says Unrated. Any idea which this is?
Hi Dmitry,

This package is supposed to contain both the Unrated and Theatrical versions. It looks like there was a bit of a glitch with the update and only the Theatrical was released into production. The Unrated should be ready shortly. I think you will see the movie show up again in My Updates when that happens. I'll also try to keep an eye on it and let you know when it is ready. Sorry for the confusion!

Super, thanks!

Apologies for the download/update issues.

A large batch of updates were queued for transfer to our content delivery network (CDN) but there was a bottleneck (since eliminated) in the transfer process that resulted in a large backlog. Our publishing tools are being updated to ensure that content will only show on the store once it's fully available on the CDN.
FYI I've seen this as a continuing issue the last couple of weeks. Currently unable to download Prometheus Extras. If I keep trying it should work in a day or two, but figured I'd let you know if this issue is supposed to be fixed.

Sisu (2022) HDR updated with audio and video improvements, and added extras.

I'll pass that along to the headend team.

Sisu (2022) HDR updated with audio and video improvements, and added extras.

HD updated to Dolby TrueHD Atmos from Dolby TrueHD 5.1

John Wick 4 (2023) HDR updated with audio and video improvements, and added extras.

John Wick 3 (2019) HDR updated with video quality improvements, additional audio tracks (inc. Dolby Atmos), and added extras.

John Wick 2 (2017) HDR updated with added audio track (English PCM Stereo) and extras.

John Wick (2014) HDR updated with added audio track (English PCM Stereo) and extras.

Love to see all the extras added. Well done, K!
Unfortunately no change to extras on these titles, but they already had them so that's great! "Added Extras" is a very common misidentification for updates and I'm curious what it is that triggers this. I'd say less than 1 in 10 times it's called out it actually occurred. Weird.

Any possibility that updates won’t delete custom scenes anymore? I put a lot of time and effort in making scripts, overcoming some degree of clunk. I know few people use it, but perhaps that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy because of the challenging UI, imprecise cuts, slow load times, and the fact that your creation breaks when you update any of the films in your script.

Any way of clearing updates? And what’s the logic of offering PCM Stereo as an update? How much space do audio tracks take up? Wish there was a way to delete individual audio tracks that take up space.

The Sound of Music (1965) in HD from Twentieth Century downgraded to DTS-HD Master 7.1 from Dolby TrueHD Atmos

Ummm…. Why would they downgrade the audio??

They didn’t downgrade the audio. I just checked, it’s still ATMOS. Not sure what this gentleman was smoking this morning lol.
The 4K version is Atmos, but as the above post states this update was to the HD version which is 7.1 now. They may not have had permission/rights use that track on HD which is often the case with all delivery platforms.

Honestly, I am not trying to shoot the messenger so this isn't aimed at you personally, but that is an appalling answer if the supposition is correct.

If someone bought it in HD with ATMOS then it should always be in ATMOS regardless of what rights K had, currently have or will have. If you buy a movie on disc in HD with ATMOS then it is always in ATMOS (I know this is obvious!). Should the disc distributor lose the rights to have that soundtrack then they just reissue the movie without it and new purchasers are simply out of luck but existing owners aren't in any way affected. They don't just come around your house, kick the door in and replace the disc you have whilst you are out at the pub tyring to break your liver, get your oats or whatnot.

I was always uneasy that people lost access to the alternative cut of Bad Santa as part of the whole HD conversion shambles so this is another unwelcome turn of events.

Such downgrades of digital purchases is actually illegal in the UK so I hope they aren't doing these types of shenanigans in the UK store although granted there is much less content to work with in the first place.

I do hope there is just a misunderstanding somewhere and folks can just ignore my post but I worry that precedents are being set for peoples collections in the future.

If it was in Atmos and someone has the HD version with Atmos, they shouldn't download the 7.1 version. It will always be in Atmos if someone doesn't do the upgrade (in this case downgrade).

Sort of obvious but not really an effective workaround.

It assumes the movie is already downloaded which for several reasons, most notably storage capacity, may not be the case. In the event of future storage failure then this option is not available plus it effectively locks that title from being able to benefit from any future updates to the movie such as video updates or when extras or alternative cuts are added that are not made available separately. So I still maintain that if it is is indeed the case that this is a worrying development although one that I concede to date is extremely rare.

It still would be illegal in the UK store though. Granted the law isn't really enforced and precedent hasn't been set but that isn't really the point even if as far as I know none of the affected movies have ever been available in the UK store so any argument is hypothetical at this stage.

We are actually seeing a number of audio downgrades lately, so this doesn't entirely surprise me. I currently will not update my HD download of Edward Scissorhands because as a part of an audio "upgrade" to Atmos they removed commentary tracks. I already have Atmos on the 4K version and don't wish to lose the commentaries, but barring a change from K this appears inevitable (much like my Bad Santa downloads).

All digital stores, including K, have it written into their terms that digital products can be updated, changed, or even removed entirely. This is agreed to by all parties as part of using the system. It is the nature of digital. Having said that, these are the same mechanisms that allow for updated video and audio, the addition of extras, etc. The vast majority of the time "updates" are positive and benefit the consumer. Unfortunately, on rare occasions, you get The French Connection.
