Movie Updates

There should be full transparency regarding any updates. Let the customer be aware about the potential additions/ pitfalls associated with the supposed upgrade.

Any else can be construed as shady. I would be absolutely devastated if my copy of Gravity lost the ability to support atmos due to an inadvertent upgrade/downgrade.

I like the suggestion earlier wherein the poster was alluding to future purchases being made to adhere to latest licensing requirements. Don’t penalize early adopters.

By its nature, K is the only digital store that can facilitate this behavior. Apple simply updates their servers and the deed is done. With K you have the opportunity to retain your current download and avoid the update (at least for a while).

On that note, K owners should absolutely research every update before downloading. While this may not have always been necessary, with the introduction of the Strato V in July 2024 and the subsequent HD Compatibility effort, evaluating updates has become essential. I currently have 6 titles in Movie Updates and another 162 in HD Compatibility that represent "downgrades" from my currently downloaded version. Yup, nearly 170 digital downgrades pending. Although I expect the vast majority to be addressed in time, I do expect some to become permanent.

Further, we are approaching the two year anniversary of the HD Compatibility effort and K is still wrapping up primary titles before moving to alternate cuts and extras.

All digital stores, including K, have it written into their terms that digital products can be updated, changed, or even removed entirely. This is agreed to by all parties as part of using the system. It is the nature of digital. Having said that, these are the same mechanisms that allow for updated video and audio, the addition of extras, etc. The vast majority of the time "updates" are positive and benefit the consumer. Unfortunately, on rare occasions, you get The French Connection.
Not wishing to derail this thread but if those terms exist for the UK store then they are unenforceable for a number of reasons. Of course this doesn't apply when buying from the US store from within the UK.

In any case normal service can now be resumed!

Just a few random thoughts and observations on this topic.
  • The whole "Atmos on UHD, 5.1/7.1 on HD" has been around since the first UHD discs were shipping.
  • Looking at The Sound of Music on other formats, Kaleidescape now matches their delivery.
  • If you purchased The Sound of Music in HD before the 4K upgrade (some titles allow you to separately purchase lower resolution versions but not TSoM), you purchased it with a non-Atmos audio track. That was added with the 4K upgrade.
  • As has been mentioned, all digital stores have the right to alter/remove content after purchase, Kaleidescape is probably the best case scenario for users because of the download model.

Random note, but this "calling out" of The Sound of Music's audio track update tipped me off to the available commentary tracks on the HD version. :)

Most of the consumers upgrade in good faith. Or at least that was the case with me previously, before these “upgrades” started getting highlighted out here. Of course going forward customers will (and should) become more circumspect about upgrading their existing purchases.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) from Twentieth Century in HD downgraded to DTS-HD Master 5.1 from Dolby TrueHD Atmos

As a V owner, I don't have the option of simply not updating. This was the case when Jurassic Park series was switched from DTS-X to Atmos. In an ideal world, It would be nice if Kscape would allow owners to have access to both versions. At minimal, I feel that Kscape should give owners a min of 14 days notice so that they can explore options such as downloading versions before they're automatically changed in the servers.

Jurassic Park never had DTSX on the 4K releases and only the World ones in HD did. Universal suck for that on 4K releases from a certain time period on KScape. Apollo 13, Lone Survivor, Gladiator, Oblivion, no DTSX for us, only disc, plus some without Atmos from the same period. Jurassic Park only got updated from DTS 7.1 because of the new Atmos disc releases!

Yeah I've noticed the lack of DTS:X on some 4K titles. There are also some where the HD version has DTS:X but the 4K version is regular DTS or sometimes Atmos. I don't understand these finicky license agreements. Is someone really benefiting from these restrictions? I wish K could push more for unique agreements that allow for more flexibility since K itself is a unique platform. I don't understand the any of the behind the scenes negations/contracts though.

I think Universal are the main culprit and it’s because the digital and disc departments are separate so I assume the digital mezzanine files only bothered to do lossy DD+ Atmos in the early days and for whatever reasons the studios won’t make any concessions for KScape to get the better disc audio. Thankfully Universal have changed course since about 2022 and now we get the good stuff but I’d really like for them to go back and add DTSX and Atmos to the titles missing it of which there are many!

I stand corrected. However, as an owner of a title, I still believe that I should have a choice in the upgrade. As some have mentioned; what appears to be an upgrade often comes at the cost of a removal of something such as audio commentary.

You absolutely have a choice. An upgrade is never automatic and requires you to manually select to take the upgrade. You can compare the upgrade/store listing to what you have on your device and decide whether or not you want it. You can ignore them as long as you want, though if you ever delete the title, move servers, etc. you'll have to redownload and will get the new version at that time.

I think many new K users now are using stand alone units so don't have much downloaded or those with servers may only have enough server space for a portion of their collection. So for those people not much choice.

Marvel's The Avengers (2012) HDR updated with audio and video improvements, and added extras.

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) HDR updated with audio and video improvements.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) HDR updated with audio and video improvements, and added extras.

Yeah you’re out of luck if you have deleted that title on a standalone unit and want to redownload, at a later stage. You are stuck with the updated/latest version, you cannot force a previous version. Unless I’m missing something.

Correct. Unfortunately this is the nature of digital. 90%+ of the time we benefit from improvements but it is a double-edged sword. Having said that, K is unique in offering a way to mitigate this with full-size/quality downloads. If you are sufficiently concerned about this issue then there are products available to address it. The cheapest option on the rare occasion this happens is to buy the disc.
