Last movie watched

My favorite MCU is either Iron Man or Avengers End Game or Captain America Winter Soldier. Haven't seen The Marvels.

I agree. I actually liked The Marvels, but I may be a little biased because I really liked the series, Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel is my daughter’s favorite movie and character.

Eternals is the still lowest point of the MCU for me.
Yep, and for me. It's been a downward slope ever since Avengers Endgame but Eternals was so awful I wonder sometimes did I miss something fundamental that others must have enjoyed. It's so bad that I can never remember the name of the movie and have to look it up to remember. Shang Chi was a disappointment and a struggle to get through but I assumed that was aimed at the Chinese market and so at least it had an excuse.

I grew up on the superhero comic classics like Fantastic Four, Spiderman, Batman, Superman and The Flash etc. and up until Endgame marvel had just got it so right. They got the wit and tone alongside the characters. The whole timeline/multi-dimension thing leaves me cold and when they reached for that to help them I just knew to would go wrong. I also think they lost the plot by making everything bigger, badder and louder with each movie to the point that they lost the stories and characters leaving them hollow. The comics flourished because they weren't omnipotent (goodies/baddies) they had strengths, weaknesses and each story saw those leveraged to beat the odds.

Kang ? Who cares any more which is a shame because the Ant man at one point looked as if it might have character and story with less omnipotence but...... Sorry bit of a rant.

The Luckiest Man in America - really well done, enjoyed it. Paul Walter Hauser and Walton Goggins!

Watched Dune 2 last night with new Audio enhancements - brilliant.

As an FYI - watch out - downloaded the new version of Rocky IV (edited) by Stallone - rocky v Drago - awful

What are the new audio enhancements? Did it sound different than the previous? The Dune 2 sound track was already a standout.

I've been wanting to see this one. Are you a fan of Rocky IV, what makes this updated cut awful?

I thought it might be fun if we had an ongoing thread where we could all share the last movie we watched. I know I’d enjoy hearing from others about what was the centerpiece of your last movie night.

Tonight, my husband somewhat randomly had the urge to rewatch Tron: Legacy. I saw it twice back when it was new, but Letterboxd tells me I hadn’t seen it since then — more than 10 years now. K to the rescue! It’s absolutely the best thing to me about K that we can so often think of a movie and be watching it just a short time later in the best available quality.

Tron: Legacy was a variable aspect ratio release on Blu-ray, so the fact that K has the ‘Scope version was icing on the cake: The movie was a blast to watch on our ‘Scope screen. But the real stunner was the lossless soundtrack. It’s an incredible 7.1 mix, and hearing Daft Punk’s score again was a real treat.

What was the last movie you watched?
Love this idea. Also, makes me want to watch Tron again! My most recent film that I watched was Bad Boys: Ride or Die (4th installment in the series). It’s a wonderful action film filled with hilarious moments from Martin Lawrence. Lawrence makes the movie for me to be honest. The sound quality was amazing with my Dolby Atmos setup and the visual quality just pops on the K. It was one of those films like Top Gun: Maverick that I love because it has that summer blockbuster film feeling without any thinking needed. You can just enjoy the visuals and audio and watch these cops grow older and work through their adventures together. It has tons of shoutouts to the earlier films and if you’re a fan of the bad boys franchise, this is a “can’t miss” in my opinion. Just some good old fashioned action!

FYI, both Tron and Tron: Legacy have received 4K Dolby Vision remasters in preparation for Tron: Ares. If you're in the LA area, the original is getting a special 4K DV screening here: Tron in Dolby Vision . We can expect the 4K DV upgrades to both titles on K upon release.

I've been wanting to see this one. Are you a fan of Rocky IV, what makes this updated cut awful?
First off, the pacing in the original was relentless in the best possible way. It was a montage esq adrenaline rush with tight editing, music driving every moment, and not as much dialogue, which, actually, made it more powerful. The new version bogs things down with extended character scenes and alternate takes that disrupt the rhythm. You’d think “that sounds great!” But genuinely the extra dialogue was weak / non-emotional, It tries to inject more drama and realism, but that’s not what made Rocky IV a classic. It wasn’t meant to be subtle. It was an operatic underdog story, they all were, but esp IV.

Eg - in Apollo’s dressing room before he fought drago, Apollo and Rocky have a real discussion, about what’s to come, what it means to Apollo and how vital it is for America and him to get out there are show the East who they’re dealing with. He took it out. For clear obvious reasons, to make it less “war” like and more passive / lighter. There’s also a brilliant bit where Rocky asks Apollo how he feels and Apollo says “I feel like NAILS stallion” and Rocky thinks Apollo said he feels like snails - “nails stallion, n-n-n-nails!!”
It’s hilarious, and also tells you everything about Apollo’s mindset, swagger, confident, electric. Stallone cut that from the recut, in favor of a darker, more serious tone, but in doing so, he erased the dynamic that made Apollo’s death actually hurt even more. Without those little moments of brotherhood and banter, the loss doesn’t feel as personal.

That’s just one scene taken out. There are much more / comedic and emotional scenes that MADE the original so good.

Then there’s the music! The original used its soundtrack like a weapon, Hearts on Fire, No Easy Way Out, Burning Heart, Training Montage, War. And every track was Bullseye to the emotion of the scenes / storyline. In the new version, some of the music is altered or repositioned, and it dulls the emotional highs. The audio quality is marginally cleaner in the recut, some remastered crowd sounds, and ambient noise, but it’s not a game-changer. In fact, the removal of some iconic musical beats in certain scenes makes the film feel quieter, less intense. The original’s soundtrack was the atmosphere of the movie, the fight scenes felt bigger because of it.

Also missing was the robot. People mock it, but it was pure 80s. Corny, yeh, but it was part of the film’s charm and balance. Removing it doesn’t add seriousness, it just removes the flavor. You don’t make a gourmet dish better by taking out all the seasoning.

Finally, and most importantly, the original embraced what it was, a muscle bound morality tale with Cold War stakes, pulsing rhythm, and heart. The recut is Stallone trying to retrofit gravitas onto something that was already perfect in its time and purpose.

This is great! Thanks! Love the robot...Happy Birthday Paulie!

Hitchcock - enjoyed it, interesting story. Great cast.

Juror #2 is another Clint Eastwood well crafted movie. Grab it at $14.99.

Yeah, this is a solid film for sure.

Watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off as a family last week. First time my teenage-ish kids had seen it. Fun classic. They liked it. Quite a lot of introspection in that movie too on top of the silliness. This one needs a 40 years later sequel where Ferris' kid(s) pull hijinks, but done with the same care and quality as the Top Gun sequel.

It looked great as well! 4K SDR, but real clean unlike a lot of older movies from the the similar time.

I bought Ferris Bueller's Day Off on K in Jan I believe. I loved that movie as a kid. In the last two months I've watched it twice; it's so classic.

One of K’s “let’s not pay for HDR” releases during the Strato V development. Hopefully this gets a Dolby Vision update in the not distant future.
