About Strato V, Dolby Vision, and FEL

I have noticed this even on a non-DV display...often playing back a DV title on a non-DV projector results in an "dimmer" ...I know it color ..but dimmer seems to descibe it better for me image...-vs- the HDR10 version from K or the disc. Still waiting on option to make HDR10 my default version since I do not have a DV display.

Yes, on Wick the 4k SDR had more color saturation than the DV version. It’s like the red end of the color spectrum has been drained to a noticeable degree in Disney, Paramount and Lionsgate DV versions on K. Maybe other studios as well but those are the ones I have noticed.

I noticed it in certain scenes from Top Gun: Maverick. i.e the beach football scene was noticeably "dimmer" playing back the DV version on th non dv projector than either the disc or the HDR10 versions.

Howdy folks,

We’ve been actively investigating the issues that some of you have reported regarding color rendition on certain movies that have Dolby Vision versions. I’m happy to be able to tell you that we’ve identified an issue that causes a hue shift in certain colors, and we’re in the process of updating affected titles.

The movies below have been updated already, and more will follow as they are completed and go through QA:
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Top Gun: Maverick
I won’t get into a lot of detail on the exact technical issue, but in general terms, when Dolby Vision source files are being processed, there are multiple assets that are processed and merged together to produce the final file that is downloaded to your system. Those assets can be in any of a couple of different formats, and there was an issue that affected only certain uncommon combinations of those formats.

Because of how content is processed, this issue can also affect the HDR10 version of a movie that has Dolby Vision, since the HDR10 version is produced alongside the Dolby Vision version using some of the same assets. We will update both versions of affected movies when needed.

I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed information about what they were seeing, including those who made support calls or posted observations here. It was helpful in our investigation.

Thank you for this (as a prospective Strato V buyer).

The other issue that has me waiting on the sidelines is that many are reporting audio dropouts with the Strato V. This seems to be more common with DolbyVision titles, although as best I can determine, it occurs with other titles as well.

Does this fix impact this issue, and/or has Kaleidescape identified the cause of the reported audio dropouts, with plans for a fix in place?

Just woke up and saw this, testing time it is!

Yeah it does look fixed now (K DV vs disc HDR 10 vs Disney + DV).

Feeling like Doc Brown right now: “It works!”

@MikeKobb Is there a way for us to know when a movie has received a DV fix? Bought some of the MCU titles this week on the new sale but now I want to wait until they have had the DV fixes applied. Give my thanks to the team for sorting this out too.

I think they'll show up in the Updates section of the store as "Audio and Video improvements" or something to that effect, assuming that you have the DV version downloaded currently.

No, this fix would not affect audio. I know that there is active investigation related to some of these dropout reports, but I confess that I have been very focused on finishing a project that I'm working on, and I have not kept track of where things stand. I will see about getting an update next week.

I’m a standalone V user though, so I don’t want to download it to watch until I know it’s fixed.

Ahhh, yes, I see. Let me talk to the team. Perhaps we can make a list of updated titles available. Right now, that list is the three movies above, but I know others are in the works.

Interesting. Infinity War doesn't seem fixed to me. I didn't see anything about an update, but I did redownload it.
The force awakens looks good though.

If this impacts The Last Jedi I hope it gets updated

Any particular scene that you are using? I can check that one as well. I think the example I had seen posted here previously was Paltrow’s skin tone at the beginning of the movie.

The Dolby Vision version, correct?
He’s right. Here is the HDR10 disc vs the K DV version. Maybe the team meant Endgame? It seems they went for super high box office movies with Force Awakens and Top Gun Maverick, so would make sense for Endgame to be first over Infinity War.

And before anyone jumps in remember iPhone post processing nonsense is altering both images by adding additional redness to both. Focus on the fact that they are different.

@MikeKobb Pretty sure it was Endgame and not Infinity War. Here are some disc HDR10 vs K DV pics.

Hmmm. That's the list I was given, but maybe there was a mistake. I will check!

Okay, mystery solved. Infinity War was updated, but something prevented the updated version from publishing properly. That's been fixed, so you should see that show up as an available update shortly. Regarding Endgame, I don't believe that movie was affected by the issue.

Got the update. Infinity War is fixed 👍

Excellent. Also, I spoke with the team, and since the Updates mechanism isn't a great way for Strato V owners to find out that movies have been updated with this fix, we'll post a list. I think I'll make a new thread for it so watch for that.
