NEWS: Strato V Player Announced

I think the V was a great decision by K, as it will bring many to the platform. Though I must say, I’m a little miffed. I just bought my system 2 months ago. Before purchasing, I reached out to K to ask if Dolby Vision was on their roadmap, as I used an OLED TV for my primary display. Their response was “we do have a product roadmap but we do not discuss details on the new products”. Now, less that 2 months later…. Sigh!

The new limited interface for the Strato V in standalone mode.

@MikeKobb is this the new interface going forward?

I have this in grouped system mode as well and while fresh, I do somewhat prefer the old view for collections. Is there an easy way to toggle back and forth or is that view permanently gone?

Asking because prior post mentions this was the view in standalone mode and I’m most definitely not in standalone 😂

Thanks!

@MikeKobb or @J.Green , just an observation but why are there DV titles for movies like LOTR extended editions and regular editions but not hobbit extended editions and aliens/abyss but not the aliens/abyss special editions?

Is that based on popularity as you mentioned and the other extended or special editions of those films will eventually follow?

This is a comment on K international pricing. I have been waiting for a reasonably priced K product, with Dolby Vision, and was delighted to hear of the Strato V - assuming the $ to £UK price would be about one to one - $4000 or £4000- even given the UK conversion rate makes the $ price closer to an equivalent £3000.

Instead the price is over £5300, or very nearly $7000!

As far as i’m aware this is the same unit, nothing is changed for the UK, so how can this massively inflated price be justified on a unit that is aiming for a lower entry point?

As someone who wants to buy K, this has put me off…

Is that really the uk price? I have looked around a few times and struggled to find anything. The K site seems to always take you back to the us and Canada dealers and Google hasn’t found a lot for me so far. That price sounds like the c player price. The uk pricing has always been higher but if your post is accurate then it makes very little sense to me. Mind you crazy seems the new norm in the world right now so who knows. For now I will let thing settle and keep an eye on prices and answers to your post.

Prices for Strato C and V are the same.
Keep in mind that US prices are excl. VAT.

It is the price i’ve seen in several places.

Even with 20% Vat it’s the equivalent of just over £3700, not £5300!

Importing electronics from the US to the UK adds layers of cost. On top of the product base price, you'll have shipping, insurance, and potentially import duty rolled in, depending on the item. Finally, a 20% VAT is applied to the total cost, including any duty, making imported electronics potentially pricier than your domestic options. This may factor in.

Not even close.

I may have missed this earlier in the thread, but does the new HD format reduce space requirements? I updated my eligible movies this AM, and my available space went from 7 4K movies to 10 4K movies just by updating eligible titles to the new HD format via the strato v report.

It was stated that this could be a possibility, but won’t be true in all cases. Did you look at each update before applying? The more likely cause is that a lot of Special Features were removed (or downgraded to SD) resulting in more available space.

I just clicked upgrade all. I'm not a big special features guy, so I didn't even check.

No worries. The intention is for everything to come back, so you’ll get update notices as that occurs. Plus, when extras do come back, they’re expected to be separate downloads so you could opt out and keep the space. Or, if you’re like me and only downloaded full HD versions just to get extras, you’ll be able to save even more space by not downloading the movie.

Having Special Features as separate downloads has actually been a long running request, and has been made a necessity by the Strato V’s HD limitation and K’s update process. Good times.

It was an excellent try but as others have said, it doesn't come close to explaining the markup on the products in the UK. TBH it's prohibitive and although we own and enjoy the K C player and 2 compact terra servers I struggle to explain the cost difference to impressed UK friends and so far none of them have ordered one despite loving the approach and performance. We knew and loved K ourselves but refused to pay the UK price on principle for years. Due to a failed install we had a refund to 'spend' and it was then that we weakened and used it for the player and the first terra.

TBH I would be happy to buy from the US for the UK but have been warned (vaguely) of problems that arise when someone does this. I have to say that this smacks of black magic explanations of why we shouldn't cut out the UK distributor. My only guess was that the heavy markup was in some way to fund local UK support but I have failed to find any and suspect I should just have brought one across with me. I suspect that makes sense with this new player if we do decide to add it in the future.

I must say this country markup isn't something I come across very often these days and an explanation would be nice but I really can't see any answer that could make sense of it.

Then the only explanation is taxing you Brits back for taxing our tea, stamps, and other products a couple hundred years back.

Thanks!

The horizontal collections view is what will be used on Strato V regardless of whether it's in standalone or grouped mode. The "full UI" simply re-enables user-defined collections along with the Movie List and Movie Covers views.

The text-based Collections view is only available on Strato and Strato C movie players. There is no configuration option to allow one to toggle between the two different Collections views.

We will be continuing to refine the design and features of this new Collections view in future kOS software updates.

So once my Strato V arrives I can go to “all movies” filter for “Movies I own” and under video filter for “DV” and then “download all.”

I think then I must go in and delete (perhaps ahead of time) the non DV versions manually—correct?

@J.Green , so how do I get to full UI on a Strato V? Or is it not possible?

If I remove my Strato C from the system, does it revert to Full UI mode?

Might be faster on the web store to go to Manage > My Movies, apply the Dolby Vision quality filter and select the "Not downloaded to..." option. But more or less the same effect.

Assuming that you aren't keeping a Strato C in your system and will only have Strato V players, then this is correct. If, however, you are still keeping a zone with a non-Strato V player, you might want to keep the HDR10 versions of your downloaded titles.
