NEWS: Strato V Player Announced

As an example, one of the possible reasons for a title to be incompatible with Strato V would be if it is using the VC-1 codec, which the new chip in the Strato V does not support.
Hey Mike, out of curiosity, what is the new codec for HD?

I, also, wanted to thank everyone and, in particular, our friends at K-Scape, for their willingness and readiness to address all the questions in such a courteous and thoughtful manner. I've learned a lot from this thread and I am glad to be part of the K-Scape community.

I know this feature has been asked for a while now, but with the V has there ever been any serious consideration to add a movie menu that shows a K user their complete owned movie library? I get you want to sell Terra's, but IMO downloads are getting so quick now that owning the biggest Terra isn't as important to most home users as it was years ago and this option would just add to the easy functionality.

(Bonus points if you can make it play random trailers and Trinnov demonstrations while the movie downloads to enhance the theatre experience. ;) )

Will any current library TV shows get the Dolby Vision treatment?
@StanfieldNC hit the nail on the head with this question.

This is where I think the real gap between Kaleidescape and others will be widened if so between the streaming platforms.

Yes you can buy most of these on disc like for like, but it would be a game changer for HBO shows etc.

Disney+ probably anticipated this, hence why we don’t see their Marvel and Star Wars series shows available (unless due to some other issue)…..

Hey all, a quick note for those of you wanting to check out which movies are available today in Dolby Vision. If you go to the store website, you can pull up the All Movies view and use the Video filter to select Dolby Vision. If you're interested in a specific movie, just open its details. There's a new Dolby Vision badge that will show up after the 4K badge if the movie is available in the Dolby Vision format.

This is not yet supported on the mobile applications but will be shortly -- both iOS and Android are in final QA now and should be released in the next few days.
Just an update:
The updated Android version of our mobile app with Dolby Vision support is released and available on the Google Play store.

The update for the iOS version is still wending its way through Apple's approval process but will hopefully be available soon.

I just feel my use case in taking advantage of Dolby Vision will be on the TV where we watch many of our shows and few movies.

So i have about 220 titles. About 20% are older movies pre 1980. should I keep my Strato C in my group if I buy a Strato V?

I've learned the following that may be of interest to others here:

Certain titles, such as Gravity, have had different versions. If you downloaded an earlier version (e.g. Theatrical version) that is no longer available in the K-Store, the title will not appear at all in the Strato V Readiness "report" in any of the categories, namely: "Download a compatible 4K version that you own;" "Update your downloaded HD titles to a compatible HD version;" Upgrade your downloaded HD titles to compatible 4K version;" "Download a compatible SD version that you own." However, if you own the Standard edition in this case, it will appear.

Separately and presumably, the Strato V Readiness report offers the option to upgrade downloaded HD titles to 4K since they are not compatible in HD. Therefore, if you do not want the 4K version (for space or quality reasons), these titles must be downloaded in SD (pending update to a compatible HD version) if such a version is available. Hopefully, @MikeKobb or @J.Green will correct this statement if wrong.

Hmmm. Does your old version of Gravity not appear in the "Ready to Play" category?

Regarding your second paragraph, the way the readiness report was designed was to basically present the options available to you in an order reflective of what's the best experience.

  1. Download a 4K version you already own -- obviously this would be considered among the best options. You get a playable version of the movie that also has higher video quality. You're correct that if you don't want the 4K version, then the only other option may be SD.
  2. Update to a compatible HD version -- replace the version you have with a compatible version at the same video quality.
  3. Upgrade to 4K -- there's a cost associated, but you end up with a playable version at a higher video quality.
  4. Download an SD version that you own -- a step down in video quality, but at least you can still watch the movie until a compatible version is available.
  5. Not yet compatible -- this is the least desirable, obviously. There's no other version available.

I just got my Strato V. I’m in the process of activating it and setting it up. I’m stuck on the activation screen because I want to put in my dealer partner’s referral code name but they’re not getting back to me and I’m so eager to get this thing going!

Can I leave that blank and then contact KScape later to add the referral code so we each get the ($100?) movie store credits? @MikeKobb or @J.Green ?

I tried calling them but every number goes to voicemail. They must be super busy with new V activations! 😊

I could send you my referral code if you're antsy.

Re: Gravity: No, the title does not appear in the Ready to Play category. But, as I indicated, I apparently downloaded the Theatrical version some time ago, which is no longer available.

Hmmm. Still, I would have expected it to be there. I will check with the team.
