Criterion announced they're releasing "Seven Samurai" 4K (as well as Yojimbo/Sanjuro). So I feel like that's a bad sign for K getting it.

Well spotted didn’t think to check. Upgraded both this and also Balboa as it shows as an upgrade and is available in 4K HDR&DV at the UK Store contrary to the US one.

Even with upgrade pricing the Rocky movies are a bummer for pricing. I can buy the entire set in 4K HDR on disc right now for $72. This even includes the two different cuts for Rocky IV and Rocky Balboa. MGM is always a bummer for Kscape, along with new release Warner. Disney is disappointing for D2D and unfortunately dragged Fox into it as well. Still wish that K would join Movies Anywhere now that Ultraviolet is gone.

I preordered the BFI (UK) release for Seven Samurai as it supports HDR. The criterion version is SDR only. It’s quite unfortunate that Criterion has been omitting HDR in many of its recent releases.

Yes and No. I trust Criterion as one of the only studios to make the correct decision on if HDR is advantageous or gratuitous in their releases, based on the film, not the bottom line.

The real question is why. Maybe they find the 4K SDR version is the better one or preserves the artistic intent better than the 4K HDR. Maybe Criterion will comment on this at some point. I highly doubt given the age of this film and how it was shot that the 4K SDR version would be disappointing in any way.

I don’t know why. Maybe they are cutting corners? Who knows. BFI UK, is a well respected/ regarded entity and I wonder why they chose to include HDR and not honor artistic integrity as well.

Anyways it’s not just this title, several other criterion titles have been handed similar treatment in recent times. I’m not the one who buys the “less is better” mumbo jumbo from studios who insist on half arsing customers.

No, but i blindly defend the artistic integrity of a 70yo film. The director (before he passed away in 1998) informed me what he had envisioned for the uhd release in 2024.

Fwiw, when I expressed my desire to acquire the movie from a particular label, I never intended to promote a debate. That was just my preference. If you want to buy thru criterion, knock yourself out. Also try to tone down your borderline hostile/ confrontational attitude when you post on a public platform.

the purchase price is showing as just £9.99 in the UK vs $24,99. As posted before it's fairly unusual to be that way round.
