Strato V: UI resolution limited to 1080, not 4k!

If you have a processor with frame-by-frame DTM feeding a projector...what value is DV in any form?

That's correct. The graphics engine in the new System-on-Chip is natively 1080p. When connected to a 4K display, it is then scaled up in hardware. We are aware of an issue that affects the quality of the image in CinemaScape modes in particular. This was a bug that is already fixed internally and the fix is expected to be in the next kOS update.

Just to head off any question that might arise: video playback is natively full 4K resolution.
This is completely unacceptable. It looks terrible. My $150 Apple TV looks amazing. Fix this. For $4,000 you should be ashamed of yourself.

With a video processor being able to fool the source player into a high nits (10.000nits) DV-mode (as both the madVR Envy and the Lumagen can do with latest firmware versions), there´s some theoretical chance that the content you get from the player is superior as the HDR10 stream you get since DV can add additional data to the stream.
However, if that´s really the case, is still to be proven. There are several reports that people perceive a big difference, but if that´s really an improvement is still to be proven.

On this issue, I suspect the answer is no, but:

Can the Strato V be configured to output the UI at the original 1080p? I will be using it with an Envy Extreme MK2, which has better upscaling than any other device to the best of my knowledge, so the end result might look better on my 166" diagonal 2.40:1 screen.

It would need to be a "Source Direct" kind of setting, so that it will automatically send 1080p when the UI is on-screen, switching to the native 2160p for 4k, and hopefully also staying at 1080p for regular HD content.

Your intuition is correct. There’s no setting to do this, but read on below.

It looks terrible
It’s definitely not as sharp as a native 2160p UI, but if it looks “terrible”, that makes me suspicious that something is wrong. As mentioned in the post you quoted, there was a bug in 10.18 that caused cover artwork to look rather poor if you’re in one of the CinemaScape modes. Are you using one of those modes? If so, please check to see if your player has updated to 10.19, which fixed that issue.

Also, we have identified some opportunities to adjust the configuration of the built-in scaler when outputting the onscreen display. We expect that these will further improve the appearance of the onscreen display, both for CinemaScape modes and for the regular 1.78 aspect ratio. We’ll be incorporating those into upcoming software releases (probably across more than one release because some of the changes are more involved than others).

Thanks. Sounds encouraging.

When you made this (rather permanent) decision to have the UI limited to 1080p, did you anticipate the backlash? Just curious if y’all are surprised by the reaction or not.

I understand the tradeoffs made and appreciate the transparency in other posts. You hopefully understand how hard it is to fully comprehend that if you are outside of the industry.

guessing a whole segment of customers will probably never notice too (quite possibly a large majority). But there is def an obsessive core who watch every pixel with a critical eye that you must have known were out there. Not that much could be done i suppose - perhaps try to get ahead of it?

Kaleidescape didn’t make the decision, the chip manufacturer did.

Sure. But knowing the reasoning behind a decision doesn´t neccessarily mean that the issue disappears.
This reminds me a bit of the "Trinnov sync issue" - the Trinnov requires a couple of seconds before audio is synched. Leading to several seconds until you get a stable audio while the video is already running. There are endless debates with clients why a $20.000,- audio processor is not synching that fast as a $500 AVR. The issue is by design and you get a ton of other benefits the Trinnov is able to do, but this issue is what sticks. It´s just exhausting...

Now your talking - that one IS a pure pain and just shouldn't happen in a piece of kit at that price range irrespective of the "other???" benefits. Almost everyone who has been in my room to watch a movie has asked if my processor was broken when it happens - explaining to them that "it's by design" IS exhausting, especially when they follow up with "in a £20K processor? and the obligatory 🤣🤣".

Wasn't trying to stir the pot again - just genuinely curious about their predictions and if its better/worse than anticipated. I assume most people here have jobs where they've had to make similar choices and sat in meetings where it they discussed at length the ramifications.

It’s funny- I was attacked for saying the same that about the 1080p cover art and mentioning that I felt most users would agree and that at this price point we expect 4k. Isn’t that one of the points of the forum to voice our opinions and concerns?

It is the point of this forum. To be fair if you reread your posts, you came out hot. It wasn't a 'seek to understand' type approach - more "this is unacceptable! you should be ashamed! I hope someone wakes up!" and that's never going to trigger the right response. The people building this stuff are smart and dedicated and want to do the right thing, or the best they can with what they have.

I'm in software - one of my favorite sayings for new devs looking back at old code is "behind every bad decision is a good reason" :)

That’s fair and maybe I did. I should have eased up a bit.

I just couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it after spending $4,000 on this. Never would I imagine in this day and age that a $4k player would render cover art in 1080. kScape I would have thought would know their audience.

Also, as I mentioned previously my $150 Apple TV can do it perfectly. The economies of scale response didn’t sit well personally. In my opinion this was a bad decision.

FWIW, I too was shocked to see that Strato V does not output the UI at 4K. I have a PJ and therefore currently have no interest in upgrading from my Strato S, but have mixed feelings about the day I potentially do and am forced to downgrade to a 1080p UI. Maybe its just perception, but I completely understand the disappoint of others, especially when much cheaper devices are doing it.

Andy
