Strato V black screen and audio cutout issues

Weird issue happened last night after the latest kOS update.
The audio started stuttering all of a sudden. I rewinded a few seconds and then the audio stopped playing. Fast forwarded and still no audio. Exited to the movie collections screen and restarted the movie, still no audio. I turned on and off the receiver and then on the top right of screen, a kaleidescape menu popped up and said something along the lines of "secure HDMI connection resumed". The audio then played normally for the rest of the movie.

This sounds like a different issue than previously described here.

Anyone else with a similar experience?

I had the EXACT same issue the other night. The only thing that worked was switching inputs on my Anthem and then it worked. This was before tje last update so hoping it’s been resolved. I was watching the new Jurassic World when it happened. Watched it before with no issues

This was with Anthem also!

Yea hard to say where the issue happened. But when I switched over to the Magnetar and played a disc there were no issues. Did the update on the K and have watched a few movies with no issues like that. Who knows.

Send an email to K support. Note the serial number of the player and time it happened. My S was having this issue last night. K responded after checking the logs. Found it was the HDMI was bad. I actually changed out all the wires last night after trying process of elimination. Today watched a movie with no issues.

The HDMI was causing the S to complete freeze then shut down.

You are saying the HDMi board on the K Scape or the HDMI cable was bad?

I’ve been having an issue with my Kaleidescape system. This is an intermittent issue where video blacks out for about 3-5 seconds randomly, usually in the first few minutes of a movie. It’s usually fine the rest of the movie after that. Audio continues.

I managed to capture this on video, see below at 37 seconds

Example

This is a Strato E and Terra Prime combo, latest firmware. The Strato plugs into a Yamaha Aventage A4A receiver. The receiver output goes to a MadVR Envy Core MK1. The Envy output goes to an Epson LS12000

I am using the 4k/120 EDID on my Epson.

I have tried the following troubleshooting steps

- Replaced the HDMI cables from the Strato to the AVR and AVR to MadVR with 6’ Zeskit Maya HDMI 2.1 certified cables

- Tried 3 different active fiber cables to the projector - HD Fury 60’ cable, RUIPRO Gen3 40’ and the newest RUIPRO pure fiber 40’

- Tried running the Epson EDID down to 4k/60

I’ve tried everything I know of to best troubleshoot this on my own. I also have an Apple TV 4K (2021), a Zidoo Z2000 Pro, and a Playstation 5. The Kaleidescape Strato E is the only source device I have observed this happening.

Anybody else? What else can I do here? I just emailed Kaleidescape support with the same information, but thought I would try here too.

I had a similar problem a while back, which I eventually fixed by updating the firmware on my Arcam AV41 audio processor. So I'd check to make sure your Yamaha's firmware is the latest.

The other thing I'd try is, if the option is available, to disable 8k/HDMI 2.1 functionality for the HDMI Signal Format for Yamaha's input where the Strato is plugged in. You don't need HDMI 2.1/48gbps functionality for the Strato (or any other video player other than gaming), and it is more demanding of both EDID and bandwidth. It it has a setting for just 4k/60/HDR, just use that.

Thanks. Unfortunately, Yamaha is updated, and HDMI is set to 4k mode 1 (default), as opposed to 8k mode

You could try limited limiting output to 13.5Gbps (advanced settings) Also, maybe try without the Envy?

Yep, just seems random at this point, I can’t believe mine is temperature related because the server room has aircon, the rack has temperature controlled fans and never gets higher than 36C at the top where it’s hottest, the bottom I’ve never seen above 30C and the V is lower down well away from the amp and processor at the top (the two hottest things). Just one drop is too many as far as I’m concerned, especially when nothing else does it and given not everyone has the issue there must be some explanation!
Right, may have now resolved this issue, switched the HDMI ports on my Lumagen for the Strato V and Firestick. Watching a show on the Firestick there was a singular audio cutout watching a show which could have been attributed to streaming but have now also watched 2.5 movies on the V and not had any dropouts.

Will need to test more films before saying it’s definitely resolved but either the HDMI 2 port on the Lumagen is faulty or the linked HDMI 1 port which has the Zidoo Z1000 Pro on it is causing an issue. The reason I say that is because these Android devices (including the Firesticks) have always caused crazy HDMI issues on my systems and the Zidoo in particular I had to use a HDMI CEC remover on my other player to prevent it causing issues with other devices. A couple of times now I’ve also gone into the server room and seen the Zidoo is on for no apparent reason.

Really hoping it’s fixed though as the audio dropouts were really starting to annoy me! Need to decide whether to keep the RuiPro 8K fibre cable with detachable ends that I bought, given they can be upgraded to HDMI 2.2 I may hook it up for some level of future proofing but I’d need to remove 2 stretch ceilings which is why I’ve been in no rush to install it and not actually sure how to take it out and get it back in now it’s been trimmed already!

@Furnace Inferno I'm also having audio drop-out issues when the Strato V is connected to my Lumagen. I've switched to EDID "Passback" which hopefully had solved the issue (still need more screentime to confirm). What are your EDID settings for the Strato? Do you use the (recommended) "Common"?

I think I’ve got passback set already but pretty sure now it’s not the cables or V having changed ports but I’ve been wrong before having thought I’d resolved it, so will need to watch more before claiming victory!

I’ve got the fibre cable ready to go though and my backup HDMI cable that’s already in there. May also try a different HDMI port on the Lyngdorf too but hopefully I don’t need to do any of it.

I need to put an Ethernet cable through the wall anyway to link up the JVC projector which I forgot to do originally so will need to mess with the cabling at some point and I can also fix the IR cable I put in there which didn’t work with the Harmony hub as I’m using an RF extender at though moment and would like to free up the two plugs it’s using.

Damn it, watched Good Fortune and had an audio drop!

Onto the next round of troubleshooting, I’ve swapped the HDMI cable going to the projector from the Lumagen back to my 10+ year old Neet 10m cable that’s double the thickness but is probably “only” HDMI 1.4a at most. Unsurprisingly when cables were still made with quality in mind it’s been heavily overspec’d and 4K 60 HDR is no problem.

Will need to do some more movie watching now but not optimistic given the audio is split off to the Lyngdorf and doesn’t even go through the cable to the projector but let’s see what happens!

After this I will try another HDMI port on the Lyngdorf as switching on the Lumagen hasn’t worked.

Haven’t swapped in the full fibre RuiPro cable yet because the quote I got to remove a section of the stretch ceiling and put it back in the two rooms was $700 so that one is on the back burner for now! Will need to work out if there is anything else I need to do up there before committing that much!

If that fails I’m considering splashing out to get my MP60 upgraded to HDMI 2.1 as a final resort which also gives an added 2 years of warranty. Main negative of that is downtime and needing to disconnect and reconnect all the cabling.

@Furnace Inferno I'm also still having dropout issues. And it seems to be an EDID-issue with the Lumagen, as the dropouts are gone once the Strato V is directly hooked to my Trinnov Altitude 32, without the Radiance Pro in the chain...

Which model of Lumagen do you have? I’ve got the 4242 18GHz (all inputs & outputs).

I’ve tried not splitting the audio/video and going through the Lyngdorf but still got the drops. I haven’t tried without the Lumagen because the projector is calibrated through the Lumagen and I don’t want to lose the best in class DTM.

I don’t know what it is about the combination of things connected which is causing dropouts as loads of other people don’t have any and I don’t have any on the other devices!

Maybe I’ll also try unplugging everything else, the Zidoo and Firestick are both Android which I know is dodgy when it comes to erroneous signals from broken HDMI CEC in the Android system itself. When I had the rack plugged into my TV for example which meant two firesticks in the loop, the Firestick 4K in the TV would completely freeze and lockup within 30s and the Firestick Max in the rack would be completely unresponsive until I power cycled it and then would work fine until it went back to sleep.

I’ll be on a movie watching marathon next week and be able to run some more tests then.

It's the Lumagen 4446. I did the direct connection (Strato V to Trinnov) only for testing purposes. It's not meant to stay like that, as I also have my GTZ380 calibrated throught the Lumagen.

My next approach will be an exchange of cables. Jim Peterson recommends a length of 3m... Let's keep in touch on that issue.

Its been sometime since I have had any audio drop issues until this past weekend. We watch two movies...Anaconda 2025 and Zootopia 2. Both not only had audio drop out but it was permanent...as in complete loss of audio, I had to stop and restart the movie to get audio back. Previously any audio drop outs were only for a few seconds. :( Nothing has changed with my setup, cables or chain. Just V->AVR->Projector. Nothing fancy in the chain.

The Strato V shows that system was updated to kOS 10.23.1-26489 on January 12.
