NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

Not a benefit to me in my set-up. Engaging the filter on my PJ (JVC Z8) reduces brightness by 25%-30%. I'm sure others will see that as a positive.
I have the same PJ 😜. I still get 75nits on a 145” screen (soon to be 150”) but I also don’t agree with the madness of having SDR at 100nits in a blacked out room. Equally I’m not trying to replicate a TV but the cinema experience.

Even with the new DCI standards going up to 300nits I still don’t think doing that in a blacked out room it’s the same. No cinema is completely dark with the floor lighting, ceiling lighting, exit lights next to the screen and some of them have chair lighting so your eyes never fully dilate. Plus the fact the larger the screen the further you sit from it which changes how bright things look.

Anyway that’s a whole other tangent which creates even more division but I wouldn’t say not to more brightness and not needing a filter to get at minimum full P3. Still waiting for the next round of JVC’s to see if they are a decent jump on both fronts or not.

So, now that is all clear, we can say madVR is the better one..

Just kidding guys!!

I landed on madVR too. Who does DTM better is a coin-flip, but there are a lot of other features and factors to consider.

There are much more important issues than madVR vs Lumagen, such as the meaning of life, what’s the best flat-panel above 85”, and what’s the best projector under $20k?! That might take another 91 pages, so maybe we should just stick with discussing the Strato K. 😆

With Luma hopefully on the way soon, things are going to get very interesting in the VP world. I currently have a Lumagen, but will be pre-ordering a Luma the second I can. I am thrilled to see more competition in the market.

Agee. Same plan for me. Plan to buy the Luma on pre-order and hopefully sell my Lumagen. However I fear the value of my Lumagen is going to tank.

May I ask what is seen as superior on the Luma vs. the Lumagen? I visited the Luma's website when it launched and it seemed to list every limitation of the Lumagen (no 8K, no 4K/120, no HDR 4:4:4, etc.) while having fewer features. It's great that there's a new processor coming and I think there's a tremendous future for it, but just curious why you'd go away from Lumagen? (Doing theater update so genuine interest.)

It's still an unknown until there are user reviews. It is promising a lot for very little cost so we shall see. It's using libplacebo for DTM which is used in other software such a JRiver and has very favorable reviews. I doubt it will be better than Lumagen for DTM but may equal it or comes very close. It seems like a device that is just more modern in terms of interface, ease of use, plus web and mobile app control. And actually 10bit 4:4:4 input has been added since the initial design. If the Lumagen still has some value I would put that net money towards something else like maybe even a Strato K.

The website hasn't been updated, but after the Strato K came out, they tested the Luma for HDMI 2.1 input and it was successful, so it should be able to handle HDR 4:4:4 with DTM and 4K/120 passthrough (no DTM). See the following post:

For me, I want to have the flexibility to pass more than the 18Gbps limitation of the current Lumagen. Also, although the new IP to RS232 option has improved the UI greatly, they promised Control4 integration with it, but so far, that has not happened. The Luma is starting out with an awesome UI and the creator told me directly he will write a C4 driver for it. Lastly, although I very much like the Lumagen, I cannot afford to even think about the new Artisan. Instead, I rather invest in something new.

I have set up my system with a matrix so that I can switch between the Lumagen and Luma until I know that I prefer the latter and can sell the former (probably for pennies).

That new network interface for the Lumagen looks nice but didn't seem worth $500 to me. I have a home assistant server running and just added a relatively inexpensive Serial to IP adapter and there is a good existing Lumagen HA integration. I can now control the Lumagen via HA and the integration has many useful parameters that are monitored. Wish I discovered this sooner.

No it’s not. That seemed to be an accidentally posted page that’s since been taken down. Also, their primary domain is hdfury.com, not info.
Scroll down the page. It is listed there in comparison to other 2.1 HDFury devices.

I think .info is there general website and .com is the store.

My Strato-K updated to the newer firmware today. If anything the HDMI issues are worse. Still have to use HDMI 2.0 mode for any stability. Using 2.1 loses sync easily and it never really comes back until you hard reset the Strato player.

Not sure if you're experiencing the same issue as I was but look here to see if anything is similar. All of this started after the latest update:

I don’t think its exactly the same issue. If I set it at use external scalar mode, and hdmi 2.1, it seems to work ok until I try and play an 8k title. Then it permanently loses sync until I do a hard reset. It seems to work fine if you use the default mode switching, the one without external scalar. Then it just sends everything as 8k 4:2:0 since it does the scaling itself but I don’t prefer that mode. So I use HDMI 2.0 and just forget about 8k for now.

I'm using HDMI 2.0 and have been since getting the K. I should try changing back to default just to see what happens?

If you use default mode the Strato k will do all the scaling, bypassing your external scaling devices. If you don’t use 8k just use hdmi 2.0. If you want to keep 8k active then I would say experiment with it. In my case the only way it works in 8k mode is if I let the Strato K do all the scaling. It seems ok but I don’t like the idea of seeing a 4:2:0 signal for all the titles, even though I imagine it’s doing all the scaling properly.
