Is there some sort of consensus on what the best cut of Close Encounters is?

This one is decently contentious in regards to Theatrical vs. Director’s Cut being the best, while most dislike the Special Edition ending. I can’t state definitively as I like alt cuts and I even liked seeing what’s shown in the SE ending (blasphemy!).

I think that would be the Director’s Cut. I myself am in a tiny minority of fans who prefer the Special Edition. To most, seeing the interior of the spaceship ruins the mystery. To me that’s the whole effing payoff to having us gawk at lights for 2 hours.

I also like having all cuts of a film, even if I have a preference for one of them. Sometimes I like to watch a different version if I’m in the mood for it. I don’t like having options taken away.

I queued up the HDR10 and HD versions and there is a separate download of all 3 versions in both HDR10 and HD.

Did you get 2 or 3 versions from your new download? Based on the revised listing, I would assume 3 versions were deleted and only 2 were downloaded. But, hopefully it's just an error in the listing?

Good call. I checked and initially got 2 versions on that new download. Since I want to also keep theatrical version, I went into manage / downloads / recently completed ... and scrolled down and found the theatrical version and clicked the title. It initiated a download of all three versions.

I noticed the update prompt again, clicked it, and got the Theatrical 4K HDR10 version to update as well. Must have been a glitch.

Maybe a protective measure in case a metatag doesn't match the file, and the metatag wasn't updated. When they didn't square, it just paused, for both updates and new downloads. That's my theory.

Harry Potter 2's HD Compatibility update stripped Extras so Strato C owners should be cautious to only trigger updates to the 4K file if they're currently holding onto these.

I signed in to my Kaleidescape account today to find that I have 277 updates available. Most of them are simply because they “Added video format”. However, if I were to click “update now” it would just download the Dolby Vision version. The problem is, I don’t want to download the Dolby Vision version as I use the Strato C in my main theater.

I am guessing that this is a result of the introduction of Cinematic 4K. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way that I can clear a movie from my Movie Updates page, or am I going to have to start the update and then remove each movie manually from the download page?

I have the same issue. I have 122 updates available that I don't want to update. I have a Strato C for use in my Home Theater. I also have a Strato E for my Living Room TV, which I'm guessing is the reason I received the update notification. Like you, I don't want to have to start and remove an update. There must be another way to remove them.

I didn't know you could flag an account to not automatically download DV. All 122 updates are for a DV upgrade. I'm guessing they worked on updating as many movies as possible before the new Strato K.

Yeah, if you email tech-support, they can add an override to your account and it will default to downloading HDR10 instead of DV.

I signed in to my Kaleidescape account today to find that I have 277 updates available. Most of them are simply because they “Added video format”. However, if I were to click “update now” it would just download the Dolby Vision version. The problem is, I don’t want to download the Dolby Vision version as I use the Strato C in my main theater.

I am guessing that this is a result of the introduction of Cinematic 4K. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way that I can clear a movie from my Movie Updates page, or am I going to have to start the update and then remove each movie manually from the download page?

For anyone else having this issue, it was easier than I anticipated to clear the updates. All you have to do it click “Update All’ and then go to your download queue and click “Removal All”.

This is all a bit confusing. Update normally has a few titles, but today I have 306 updates! Realize this is because of the new format, but what does that have to do with my system with just a Strato C and V?
