Movie Updates

The Dolby Vision versions on K are Profile 5 so ultimately they should be pretty much identical to the HDR10 version unless they did a more updated encode for some reason. They lack the benefit of FEL data, so for LLDV there really isn’t much point. For flat panels there may be a difference depending on how well the panel works with HDR10 vs Dolby.

But should a DV version played on a HDR10 JVC Projector look identical to the HDR10 version played on the same projector? I assumed yes...but I have found several movies where the DV version is dimmer....which is why I have avoided DV versions of movies. This is of course without any Lumagen, Envy, HDfury or anything.. Just Strato V plugged into the AVR/JVC. I really wish Kscape would just query the Strato V and if told its not hooked up to a DV display...default to HDR10 versions of titles. Doing it manually for every title I buy/download is annoying. It should know its not in a DV capable setup.

You can’t play the DV version with a JVC inless you are hacking it with LLDV, so not sure what you are doing here.

Sure you can...the Strato just plays the base HDR....same as if I play a DV disc in my Panasonic player hooked to the JVC or watch something off Netflix that is DV. Sure the display is not getting a DV signal

If what you say is true they why on earth does Kscape download DV versions of titles to a Strato V that is not hooked up to a DV display.

I am confused now.

Correct. They made it where it ignores the metadata and just plays the HDR10 base layer. You’re seeing differences in this encode compared to the dedicated HDR10 version? Any sequences in particular that looks noticeably different to you?

There's no "base layer" vs "enhancement layer" with profile 5 DV videos as far as I'm aware though. The video is encoded as a single layer in the ICtCp color space in DV profile 5, and then is converted to YCbCr by the player. So it's definitely not the same encode as an HDR10 download.

Beach/football scene in Top Gun: Maverick. The DV version is "dimmer". Only thing I think of is its somehow being seen differently by the JVC DTM.

Could be metadata changes, you ca look at the JVC info page to see what it reports for the two different versions.

Correct. What I meant is their DV version doesn’t have FEL so I would have guessed that the HDR10 playback would look nearly identical. I’d love to see examples where this doesn’t seem to be the case, especially if there are obvious differences in compression artifacts.

Ah fair, theoretically though, couldn't the mezzanine files be provided to Kaleidescape at 12-bit YCbCr (or 10-bit ICtCp), in which case the ability for 10-bit ICtCp to provide enhanced color compression (roughly equivalent to 11.5-bit YCbCr) over the 10-bit YCbCr of HDR10 have a benefit for movies encoded from the same source? Whether that actually plays out frequently in the real world is a whole different question, and I have a feeling it probably doesn't have much real world implication for most movies.

The other odd thing is that even thou I have Filmmaker mode off on the JVC.....when playing movies from the Strato...the little info box that briefly pops up in the upper right when the movie is first started shows FilmMaker Mode...yet when I bring up the INFO page it does not show Filmmaker Mode and shows the usual info that I would expect.

THis is the only device that has that issue.

I really do not have much knowledge about all this formats and such but something does seem to be "confusing" the JVC ...at least initially.

I did see where you had mentioned this on AVS, so I thought it might be attributed to the healthier bitrate. BR2049 has been my goto for years when I want to check out changes in my setup so I'm super familiar with it. I did a bit of swapping back and forth between sources as mentioned and the image from the Strato was superior to my eyes. Of course I can't rule out any bias since it was not a blind test.

Is it possible to get the Pirates of the Caribbean movies upgraded to the Atmos audio track found on the discs?
It looks like the Atmos tracks are disc exclusive. Even Disney+ only has 5.1. Hmm.

Correct. Unfortunately the 4k / atmos versions are only available overseas. I had to order my 4k steelbook boxset from the UK.

Quick reminder: this thread is really just intended for quick notifications that there's a movie update to a particular title... similar to the "New 4K/BR Releases" threads here.

These are great discussions, and helpful to users, but they're going to get buried in this thread and not really seen by users after a week or so. It's always better to start a new thread here to discuss the encoding of a particular movie, what the differences are in versions, etc. The headline you make for that discussion will keep it much more easily found by users interested in that title.

I don't mean to dissuade quick reactions here to the release of a new movie update, or quick post about the differences or the quality, those are fine. But once it gets into a longer discussion about a particular movie or franchise or box set release or international versions, please consider starting a new thread.

We’ve already had this discussion

Only reason you see it on K is because they are one of the few who actually have the metadata in their encodes.

The color palette should be identical as they are both 2020 color and 10 bit 420. Again, the only difference with a flat panel should just be the differences in the processing capability of the panel when viewing HDR10 vs Dolby Vision.
Yeah any color “improvements” would be things where the tv has to tone map and a properly made DV version would be superior at maintaining highlight detail, and thus color. Movies with high nit grades like Fury Road would benefit here. Other movies that are in DV but the brightness fully falls within the confines of the set would appear the same, save for differences in the set’s HDR10 vs DV picture modes (specially if they are uncalibrated). But the color gamut and brightness levels in the content would be the exact same.

Do you display your disc collection? I'm really impressed and interested whenever you post about it. Would you be willing to share with us in a new thread?
It would be very difficult to showcase close to 4.5k (predominantly UHD) discs as they are spread around. Lol. But i will definitely connect with you if I’m able to.

All of the HDR video files provided to K are 12 bit 422 based on the information I have, so without FEL I can see where there would be much advantage to the DV version unless like mentioned before the new master is different and addresses issues previously seen with the HDR10 version. Artifacts in K HDR releases are pretty few and far between. The only two that come to mind for me are 1917 and BR2049. 1917 has some compression artifacts for eagle eyes. BR is better than it was originally but not as clean as the disc version IMHO. Maybe when I’m back from vacation I’ll look at these titles and see if the new DV versions have improved on these.

I did compare the Fury Road versions early on and saw zero differences between them.
