They'll never get permission to alter the aspect ratio they are provided from the studio. You know what would be great? That you can choose which ratio to download, like 2.40:1 or 1.85:1 or just as intended like it is now.
Just like there is the hdr or dv download file… that would be a fantastic option to have
I didn’t watch the whole video since it seemed to just be going over the same points so forgive me if you guys went over it but with VAR movies my understanding was the big reason movies aren’t shot fully in IMAX is both cost and the size of the IMAX rigs making it not financially or practically viable.
Outside of that, I think it’s just a lot of old school thinking, we all loved seeing movies open out from 1.85 to scope in the cinemas and the curtains pulling back so opening vertically isn’t so weird if you’ve got the room height and screen to do go bigger.
Most people at home use 16:9 which also means most people would be able to get more height and it’s why Disney+ Marvel IMAX films have proven so popular over the discs, TV users love it.
Whilst I personally find the aspect switching slightly annoying because it means not having the masking for the rest of the time (I also don’t even notice the switch a lot of the time but I certainly see the unmasked area lighting up!), that’s more a limitation of projector technology not having perfect blacks and requiring masking to begin with, not a film issue IMO.
If projectors had perfect blacks like giant OLEDs or microLED walls then it wouldn’t even be a point of discussion.
IIIIIII've gotta question the logic here. We are in the planning phase of a new construction with dedicated theater. 18W 25D 13H and planning on running the 10K lumen QL 7000 on a SI slate AT 16X9 Screen. If we're going to have a 17' Wide screen based on the room width why would I handicap the height which will be over 9' tall on a 16X9? The max width regardless of scope or not is 17' with smaller bars on the top of a massive image as opposed to crippling the image to wide bars on the side of a scope? CuriousPretty much the gist of the conversation, though my additional point was that even if my room would have accommodated a 16x9 screen at the same width as my scope screen, I'd still watch VAR content cropped to scope and masked because I place a higher value on proper masking than extra pixels. Even if I had the screen real estate, I'd rather have a dark edge all the way around and avoid the gray bars at the top and bottom for the 90%+ of VAR movies that are in scope format.
I just don't put any real value in the extra stuff they're adding, when they've already built the shot based on a scope frame. Proper masking has more value.
My throw distance is long enough that making the screen any taller would end up looking like MST3000.IIIIIII've gotta question the logic here. The VAST majority of these movies are not shot on "IMAX" cameras outside of Nolan. They may be badged, but they are not 15/70. So all the "IMAX" stuff is just an open matte version of the movie shot with a digital camera. For the Nolan movies the problem is the noise of the camera, but they have some new cameras that are starting to address that which were used for the upcoming Odyssey movie.I didn’t watch the whole video since it seemed to just be going over the same points so forgive me if you guys went over it but with VAR movies my understanding was the big reason movies aren’t shot fully in IMAX is both cost and the size of the IMAX rigs making it not financially or practically viable.

This is totally a preference thing and each person has their own tastes. I definitely understand the perfect masking thing and would also agree that it's probably a superior experience. However, it's not enough of one to cost me screen real estate. I rarely see perfectly masked content. Obviously it's not an option on TVs, but most of the theaters I go to, including Dolby Cinema and IMAX, don't perfectly match the content to the masking. So, it's something that I'm used to always being there and it doesn't particularly bug me. But, that's me.IIIIIII've gotta question the logic here. I'm already planning on the Mad VR but wanted to exclude it from the equation of where I was going with this: Scope screen plus VR plus Anamorphic lens etc.? 1) How many folks on here actually get up and put their manual masking panels up to watch content? 2) Why shell out the 10k on a lens to make a scope screen great and still only wind up with the same image I would have on a 16X9? We would have the exact same size scope image but I would have the extra height on 16X9...This is totally a preference thing and each person has their own tastes. So what would I do??? BIG SCREEN. BIG. SCREEN. B B B I I I G G G Screen. Personally, I love when I'm watching a scope movie and it expands and suddenly there's this massive image in front of me. It's great. I love it. I want it. I don't want to get rid of it.
Now, be careful talking to these guys here, because I thought I was all well and good in my world with a 16:9 screen and after a few conversations with @thrillcat and @KDeering I'm fairly convinced I'll end up with a 2:1 screen and a video processor. To paraphrase the old PSAs, "The more you know... the more you spend."
I'm raising my hand. I bought a 122 inch diagonal 16x9 Seymour UF2 screen in April of this and I bought Seymour's magnetic masking panels for my screen. I don't mind putting them on and off bc I always check the aspect ratio of a movie I'm planning to watch days in advance. And for movies that have a small amount of aspect ratio switching such as the latest Guardian of the Galaxy movie, I left my panels on.1) How many folks on here actually get up and put their manual masking panels up to watch content?
Interesting, yes I’m aware most are using the IMAX moniker without using IMAX cameras but didn’t know about the noise, I assume you mean audible noise rather than picture noise? The VAST majority of these movies are not shot on "IMAX" cameras outside of Nolan. I always put my masking panels on, if I’ve somehow forgotten the moment the film starts I’m up to put them onI'm already planning on the Mad VR but wanted to exclude it from the equation of where I was going with this: Scope screen plus VR plus Anamorphic lens etc.? 1) How many folks on here actually get up and put their manual masking panels up to watch content? 2) Why shell out the 10k on a lens to make a scope screen great and still only wind up with the same image I would have on a 16X9? It won't update automatically, but you don't need to delete it. Just click update and K will replace the file on your server. When I see a movie I own and have on my system in the app under “movie updates”, do I need to delete it and re-download it to get the update, or is there a ln automatic update at some point?
There are a lot of titles that are compatible with the C but not with the V. This is why I NEVER recommend switching from the C to the V unless you absolutely have to have Dolby Vision for some reason (which I would wager doesn't apply to most people).I switched from Strato C to Strato V . I tried to listen to Adele live at Royale Hall I downloaded on my 22 terabyte Terra . I tried to watch it today and and it is not available . Will it eventually be available ? Explain
I have an 83” LG G5 and Dolby Vision does look better than HDR10 in most movies . But my wife is not happy she can not access the Adele concert !!There are a lot of titles that are compatible with the C but not with the V. I looked and you can not buy the Adele concert anymore . Sounds like they may have lost the rights to it .There are a lot of titles that are compatible with the C but not with the V. If you own it you’ll still be able to download it when it is converted but it’s unavailable for purchase.I looked and you can not buy the Adele concert anymore . Sounds like they may have lost the rights to it .
