Movie Updates

Just looked at it. This looks like a completely different grade. Detail is fantastic and the contrast looks WAY better than the HDR version. The HDR version looks like it has raised blacks and a bit of a muted washed out appearance. This looks substantially better in that regard. I’ve compared a few other UHD vs HDR updates lately and this has been more of an exception. The Fury Road one does not look as good as the HDR version, same with the Harry Potter ones I’ve looked at.
That's really good to know, I'll be downloading the UHD this evening and will check it out soon. The 4k HDR grade on the disc reviews said it was pretty bad so I'm not surprised the version on K looks the same. Nice to have the option of the UHD SDR version!

Must be some kind of error. Have you refreshed the page? UHD upgrade free here and downloaded. Haven't watched the HDR on K but the HDR 4K-disc was a total disaster. Great movie to try the HDR vs. UHD.

This is a weird one. I refreshed my browser and it still shows the UHD upgrade at $24.99. When I check the app, I also don't see the option for the UHD download and strangely, there isn't even an upgrade offer. Only thing I can think of is that the Store thinks my version is different and doesn't qualify for the free upgrade which makes no sense since I purchased the HDR download direct from the Store (vs. an UltraViolet transfer or similar). I'll reach out to support if Mike doesn't chime in.

Here is what it looks like now:

That's odd. I have The Social Network in HDR on my system and get no report of any update for it.

If anyone has a list of popular content where UHD provides a superior image vs the HDR version on K for projectors it would be great. I only have a 48g server so I don’t have the luxury of storing both UHD and HDR versions and don’t have the time to download both, compare and then delete the least favorite. Because of this I’ve defaulted to downloading HDR. If Kris or someone else with similar experuence were to say the UHD is a noticeably superior version for certain films I’d make the switch.

Only one recently that was a clearly better version with UHD compared to HDR is Goodfellas. I know some have stated that the black levels are better with the UHD version of The Dark Knight and Interstellar I believe, but I haven't verified.

This is just my opinion:

Oblivion BD sharper than HDR

POTC 1 and T2 BD is best version-HDR and UHD has horrible DNR sharpening

Hangover uhd or BD is better than hdr (raised blacks)

The accountant and Varsity Blues BD is better than hdr (raised blacks)

Iron man 1 & 2, Thor 1 BD are my preferred versions (HDR and UHD versions has lots of DNR)

Nolan movies (Dunkirk, DK trilogy, interstellar) have raised black levels on hdr versions

First Blood and Last Jedi uhd has much better black levels than raised blacks of HDR

Bourne identity BD is just as good if not better than the terrible hdr version

I prefer the Casino Royale and skyfall BD over the hdr versions bc I don’t like the color grades of the hdr versions

Wolverine BD is (superior imo) extended version while the UHD version is the theatrical (even though it’s listed as extended)

Capsaholic is a good way to get some ideas on the differences. Then you can DL both versions on KScape to see for yourself
