Movie Updates

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) HD/SDR/HDR/Dolby Vision Updated

Changes in this update:
A Dolby Atmos audio track was added (HD)
Added extras

Extras have been added in HD to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Triggering a new download will now start up to four discrete downloads (the movie and three supplemental packages). Even though the UK cut remains missing from the HD download following the Strato HD Compatibility update, the HD download is now a whopping 217.7GB.

Supplement 1: (3 Additional "Versions" of the Movie)
Rocky-oke: Sing It! (with Vocals)
Trivia Track: 50 Years and Still Kicking!
Vintage Callback Track (Unrated)

Supplement 2: (2 Additional "Versions" of the Movie; 2 Song-Only Versions)
The Midnight Experience with the 35th Anniversary Shadowcast
Alternate Version with B&W Opening
Song Selection (without Vocals)
Song Selection (with Vocals)

Supplement 3: (Extras)
Featurettes
Trailers
Deleted Scenes

If you just want what would be classically considered "Special Features," you're good with the a movie download (includes Commentary track) and the Supplement 3 package. If you want all of the various karoake/sign-along stuff, go for the first two packages as well.

Downloading a 4K version and maintaining my original HD US & UK downloads brings this title to >300GB on my Terra.

Can anyone explain why they do things like this?

I understand that older catalog titles may be in various updated states, but why would a new major 2025 release launch without Atmos then add it a month or two later?

Generally if I’m going to pay for a new release rather than waiting until the price drops, it’s because I want to watch it right away, so I’ll already have watched it by the time it’s updated.

Any number of reasons for why they do audio updates after the initial release. I don't normally buy or rent movies when they're first released, but this sort of thing makes me even happier that I don't.

Here's a couple of possibilities...

Studio provides K with mezzanine file that only contains lossy Atmos. K asks about lossless Atmos and studio looks into it. Film releases on K Store with 5.1 per K's "no lossy Atmos" policy. Studio later provides K with lossless Atmos track. K updates movie.

K gets a mezzanine file with 5.1 only, processes movie, and uploads to K Store. Someone points out that K should have Atmos. K looks into it, discovers this is a possibility, requests the Atmos track, and updates the movie.

When the movie was released on K and I saw that the 4k blu ray had an Atmos track, I emailed K and asked if they could get the Atmos track. But that was several months ago and bc K hadn't updated the audio track to Atmos, I had assumed that maybe the Atmos track was a disc exclusive. But even that line of thinking felt weird to me bc NBCU doesn't do much of the disk exclusive stuff.

FYI, Universal is a common offender for disc-exclusive immersive audio. Everyone used the Jurassic Park/World movies of examples of this before they recently did a full physical/digital re-release that put Atmos across the board.

They were using DTS-X almost exclusively for the first few years of UHD bluray and never provided any of these tracks to K. Are there recent examples where the immersive track is missing?

From Universal excluding DTSX:

Glass, Yesterday, Secret Life of Pets 1&2, The Mummy (2017), Sing, Pacific Rim Uprising, Blackkklansman, Abominable, Oblivion.

Not super recent I’ll give you that but that’s just my list of films I have on disc which I’ve noted are missing Atmos. All notable (except Oblivion) because the HD digital does in fact have Atmos and all including Oblivion drop down to 5.1.

And there are no DTSX 4K releases from Universal on digital so that’s obviously something they have never bothered with but there are around 6 films where they offered it on the HD version.

The DTS-X on HD and not 4K is due to different distribution sources. The HD versions are disc images from the time when titles were sourced from the physical distribution side. AFAIK all 4K titles are sourced from the digital distribution side.

There is a long discussion on this forum from years back regarding the sourcing of lossless immersive tracks and how each studio handles this differently.

The Greatest Showman from Twentieth Century (Disney) has updated with a new English subtitle:
Is that the sound of a 1,000 demo scripts breaking?

All four Avengers films from Marvel/Disney have been updated with audio/video improvements.
(I'm assuming these updates are related to the [Buyer’s Guide] Kaleidescape Quality Compared to Blu-ray & other Digital Sources thread.)

I quickly clicked on one of the links you provided and noticed something peculiar to where the download section shows 2 of the same download link. In other words, it shows download 4K twice. Do you know what this may be about?

Do you currently have the movies downloaded? I pasted links from the update page and without the movies downloaded it won't show the update details (second option).

Do you have more than one player? Strato C won't play Dolby Vision, but Strato V will. When that happens it will download both versions unless you choose not to download one or the other. You can do that when you try to download...the system will allow you to choose, all or one.

None of them are currently downloaded.

I have a Strato V and E, so they both support DV. I did a refresh and it looked fine afterwards. It may just have been a temporary glitch.
