Hello! New member here.
This morning I had the opportunity to spend an hour with a couple of the sales guys at my local dealer's showroom. In their largest theater, they have set it up so they can alternate between a Strato C and a Strato K. Other components of the system in this 11.4.4 theater include a Trinnov Altitude 16, madVR Envy Extreme Mk2, Sony VPL-XW7000ES projector with Panamorph lens, and a Stewart Filmscreen StudioTek 186" screen. So far they have only downloaded 3 movies in cinematic format: Top Gun Maverick, The Greatest Showman, and F1, so these were the ones we compared. I did not ask them to download any others, because of the long download time (I really wanted to see some scenes in Project Hail Mary... oh well). But they were able to play sections of these three movies using the C, then the same content using the K. We selected scenes we are very familiar with, and went from the C to the K and then sometimes back to the C with that same scene to verify what we THOUGHT we saw.
I agree with the insightful and positive comments that have been made in this thread by other reviewers. I will share my impressions below. Caveat: I am not anywhere near as technical as others in this forum, and I am probably not able to provide any deeper or more technical information than what you see here.
General comments:
- We discovered that it wasn't extremely productive to watch items that were moving rapidly (planes flying, heads turning, helmets moving) when trying to see the difference between images. What worked better for us was to focus on more stationary items, such as background scenery like trees and mountains. We felt that there was significantly more detail visible in the sky (e.g. cloud formations) in the K image. Also, certain colors, specifically yellows and greens, seemed more vivid in the K image.
- Someone (grettagirl, I think) commented earlier in this thread that when you pause, the picture is very clear. I agree, especially when you pause on a quiet scene (i.e. where there is little movement).
Movie-specific comments:
- In Top Gun Maverick, we thought the sky, trees, and mountains looked incredible during the mission sequence. We noticed small but wonderful details in the interior of the planes, such as scratches on the aircraft canopy, that the 3 of us agreed we had never noticed before (despite having seen this movie NUMEROUS times). Screens filmed inside dark rooms had great contrast, and facial features were very clear even in the darkest scenes. In the scene where Maverick and Penny are sailing, the colors of the water and sky, and the blue sail, were absolutely beautiful. Jaw dropped. Seriously.
- In The Greatest Showman, we selected a scene near the beginning of the movie where the children are on the beach. I felt like I could have counted the hairs on the blond girl's head, it was SO CLEAR. Clothing detail was incredible. We then picked the scene with the song "Never Enough". The contrast of the white gown with the actress's skin, makeup, and red hair, against the background... the scruff on Hugh Jackman's face... everything in that scene was so clear and just jumped off the screen.
- F1 was a movie I had not seen yet, but the others had. We watched a scene where the driver made a pit stop and they got him in and out of the pit in under 3 seconds (that boggles my mind even more than the images I saw). The shine on the car exterior, the detail on the stickers on the car, and even the TIRES looked incredible.
I definitely agree with those who have said if you watch a scene in cinematic format on the K, then you watch the same scene in 4K, differences are readily apparent. There were a few times when I'd watch something on the C, then the K, and think "well, I THINK it's better", then go back to the C and say "oh yeah, NOW I get it!"
If you want to find yourself transported INTO a movie, this should do it for you. This was by far the most immersive movie experience I have had, outside of a huge IMAX theater.
In summary... AMAZE! AMAZE!! AMAZE!!!
The staff at the dealership felt that if you have a screen that is NOT acoustically transparent, you are MAY see a (very slightly) better picture than with a screen that IS acoustically transparent, like the one in their theater is. They felt that even when the holes in the screen are very tiny, there may be a very slight impact to the picture. I have no idea if this is true, so don't shoot the messenger here! I am only relaying what the guys at the dealership told me. They may have just been trying to encourage me, because my screen is NOT acoustically transparent.
They also said they have used the K with a "large" Samsung TV (I have no further details on the TV or other components in that setup) and they said the image was "spectacular".
I have a Strato C with a compact Terra server (22 TB), madVR Envy Extreme Mk2, Sony VPL-XW6100ES (Bravia 8) projector, with Panamorph lens, Trinnov Amplitude 16 and Trinnov Altitude 16, a 125" Stewart Cima screen, and a bevy of Bowers & Wilkins speakers. (See the home theater photo gallery.) Since the theater at the dealership also has many of these components in the video "chain", I am confident the K will work well in my theater. Maybe the visible improvements I saw today are more noticeable on the huge screen at the dealership than they will be in my theater with a smaller screen, but any improvement is a good thing. I guess I will find out soon!
They placed my order on Saturday June 20. We checked this morning (Thursday, June 25) and there is already a tracking number, so my K is on it's way! This is part of a larger upgrade (I am replacing/upgrading my in-wall and in-ceiling speakers and I added the K to that order, to replace my C), so I can hardly wait to experience all the goodness!
Thanks to everyone who is contributing to this thread. I am learning a lot from all of you!
