Project Hail Mary

I’ll lock it to 2.35. Any film that VARs knows that might happen theatrically, so it’s generally safe to cut off the top and bottom at home too.

Yes, I’m a butcher.
I’m tempted to lock at 2.40:1. I was previewing it and noticed the first flashback scene shows a newscast and has text that gets cutoff if viewing at 2.40. Might still do it though…

Is there a way to tell on a K listing if the movie will maintain shifting aspect ratios? Is that something K generally does support on titles that had it originally?

I haven't seen it yet either, typically I'd watch locked at 2.40, but Shane Lee mentions the film is about 80% in 1.78, so I might watch it that way, I guess. :/

Gonna finish the book first and hope for a price drop anyway. :)

If it's a known VAR title, it will be listed as 1.78 (or the tallest aspect) for shifting ratios, or 2.40 for non-shifting.

Have to ask in case I missed it before. Why is this $10 more on K than Apple TV?

Because K owners will spend more money. :)

It's all studio driven so the more likely response is that there's going to be fewer sales so they want more per sale.

I have never seen this movie. I assume it’s good.
Yes it’s a high octane action flick. One of my evergreen favorites. It has acquired quite a cult following over the years. Must watch imho.

@Aburguy Welp…I just realized that you were asking me about PHM. I thought you were alluding to Fight club, so my response was framed accordingly. As far as PHM goes, this will be my first rodeo and that accounts for my excitement level.

Watched a few minutes of both a few minutes ago. PHM looks fantastic. Fight Club is sharp but colors and contrast seem flat somehow. Maybe I need to sit down and watch the whole movie to tell.

How was the audio for PHM... I wont have chance to watch it til Fri. Seen some "reviews" that indicate audio was underwhelming...but thats from Itunes...from source I rarely trust.

Weeeeeeell, I still haven't seen the whole movie, but I did just spot test that one scene where all the stuff is shaking, and there was very little in the surrounds, heights, or bass. They were definitely all working, I tested my system against the wormhole scene in Interstellar, but with PHM there was just very little data pushed there. It was honestly beyond disappointing and into the surreal. I'll watch the whole movie soon and I'll have a better idea.

I also have a house curve running to boost infrasonic sound, but that needs something there to boost. It's possible there's literally nothing there. I don't know for sure yet, it's just very weird. It's not like F1, which was mostly quiet overall and needed everything boosted, this is otherwise a normal volume file.

I saw it in bits and pieces as well. The track is essentially a static mix with negligible surround (and height) activity during action sequences. I will get a more rounded perspective after I get a chance to go through the entire presentation.

But so far it was an underwhelming experience. Very disappointing considering the nature/theme of the film. This is not Casablanca. Missed opportunity imho. Fwiw my buddies did mention that the track was lackluster in the theaters as well. They should have hired the sound mixers who did Tron Ares.

Very sad to hear. But hopefully the story and such makes up for it. One of my favorite books of all time so expectations are high!

Thank you for the impressions. Although I would argue comparing anything to Interstellar is likely to result in disappointment.
I'd imagine a similar effect, if one were to continue to date women after Gal Gadot.

Hmm, never did much for me...she was missing the "talents" that my Wonder Woman has.

Haha! I guess I had high expectations, I do consider this benchmark sci-fi like Interstellar and Dune. Shouldn’t spaceships and heavy gravity effects involve bass though?

And while Gadot is a striking lady, I’m not sure I would enjoy dating her. Amy Adams on the other hand…
