Movie Updates

This has me nervous...Gravity is a favorite of mine and only avail in HD but with ATMOS. I am standalone V user....might reserve a spot for Gravity just in case. I keep 5 of my favorite...we can watch anytime in case of internet outage...might need to expand that...honestly only need like 2 "slots" to handle cycling titles/rentals.
Why are you worried about Gravity specifically??

At risk of what?
He’s worried that because two Fox (Disney) films have recently had their Atmos mixes removed and changed back to 5.1/7.1 since their subsequent 4K releases that WB might remove Atmos from the HD Gravity release and by extension it can happen to any other film.

Amusing though it is to see people rile themselves up about things, if one were to actually check the UHD disc releases (with included Blu-ray) then it becomes obvious they have just realigned them with those and they were probably never intended to have Atmos on the HD version and slipped through the cracks.

So whilst it’s still possible that any digital platform can go in and retroactively downgrade things, it’s no more or less likely to happen than it was before just because these two were changed.

Sadly some of us don't find such things amusing. I find it intellectually dishonest to suggest that just because something can happen that not only it should but people should simply accept it if it does. Whatever the reason, mistake or not, people paid for something and they are entitled to get what they paid for.

If something had ATMOS on disc when you bought it then it will always have ATMOS. Just because the delivery format allows for something to be removed it doesn't therefore follow that it is acceptable to do so.

For example cars have long since had the ability to limit performance through software. How would anyone feel if the 400bhp car they bought was downgraded, without warning or consent, to 300bhp during a service to realign it with another territory, new emissions regulations or the limiter simply slipped through the cracks? Yet because this is possible it is no more or less likely to happen than before just because nobody else has changed anything.

This is a tough one. I know that K will create their own HD versions of films using the 4K SDR versions as the base instead of just getting a HD file from the studio. I would imagine that this process allowed them to offer the Atmos track that came with the 4K file but that studio may not have provided an Atmos track with their HD package and didn't want that audio track to be available for HD or lower releases. Kscape has agreements with these studios and isn't going to put that agreement at risk and for good reason. So I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up a situation where they offered the Atmos mix with the HD file they created and the studio saw this at some point and instructed them that it isn't permitted and had them pull the mix. It is unfortunate for anyone that had that mix, but I also understand why it would need to happen.

This is another case of showing why there are benefits to having storage through K (Terra) as you would be able to keep the version that had Atmos. I am not aware of anytime where K has gone in an taken files off a server that have already been downloaded. Even movies that were released before they were supposed to be (4K of Minority Report comes to mind).

And if the HD version were to lose its Atmos track, it's almost guaranteed it's specifically because there is now a 4K version with Atmos.

Maybe this will help clear things up as I buy many movies on physical media and follow releases pretty well. Gravity was re-released on standard blu-ray WITH an Atmos track about a year ago. The movie originally was on Blu-ray with Atmos on what was called the “Diamond Luxe” edition that was very hard to find and went for hundreds on eBay.

The studio finally released a standard version on Blu-ray with the Atmos track due to how well regarded it is, in a standard affordable release so anyone could get it and have access to the Atmos track.

The HD version with Atmos on K currently matches what is available on Blu-ray. There is no release date for a 4K version though one has been rumored forever.

I don’t know why you think comparing physical and digital makes any sense other than the fact when you buy a car you sign a contract which stipulates the terms and conditions of the sale just like when you buy or sign up to any digital service. So if in that contract they stated they could change things like that then they very much could if you signed to say you accepted that.

Perhaps you should read those terms and conditions because you will find they all say pretty much the same thing about the license they are providing to you. Perfect example are videogames where even with physical copies they can change and remove game modes, music, online or in the case of MMO type games the entire game world can change, which includes no longer having access to paid for DLC or the entire game if the servers are switched off.

That aside my comment was more about dramatising things into big issues when being reasonable, it’s obvious why it’s happened with these two and isn’t something that’s suddenly going to start happening across the board.

I can understand the concern but ultimately it’s always been this way which is why I’m saying it’s not a big deal. Digital content isn’t a fixed point in time and that has pros and cons and whilst you may feel like someone has reached in and stolen something, you never owned it to begin with.

Not to mention many new autos can be disabled remotely by the manufacturer, completely or specific features.

This is just the double-edged sword of digital. We're on Page 93 of this thread and the VAST majority of movie updates are beneficial. When Atmos gets added to a title, no one is invoking consumer protections, demanding it be removed because that's not what they paid for, etc. The nature of digital is a changing one and far more often than not people will be invoking the advantages of not having a static element like disc. New masters, updated encodes, added audio, added Extras, added alternate cuts. And, again, K uniquely offers storage solutions as safeguards in the (very) rare circumstances where an update is a downgrade. It's normal to react negatively when these downgrades occur, but I try to keep in mind the full picture. Would I give up all of the positives to eliminate the negatives? No, I made that decision long ago.

I think Gravity will be safe to keep its Atmos soundtrack on the HD version, it's the studios that normally restrict Atmos on the HD releases and Warner Brothers is not one of them.
But Fox/Disney and Sony normally will have 7.1/5.1 DTS-MA on their HD releases and reserve Atmos for the 4k versions, I have a feeling we'll be seeing more HD versions of these studio's movies changing to 7.1/5.1 DTS-MA
Hopefully not, but I guess we'll see what the future holds
