Movie Updates

Is anyone getting a failed download for The Da Vinci Code (extras)?
I've had failed downloads for the Extras on Prometheus for over a week now. I think there's an issue on the back end with some of the new packages. I've already emailed the content team and mentioned it to K staff on this forum.

You absolutely have a choice. An upgrade is never automatic and requires you to manually select to take the upgrade. You can compare the upgrade/store listing to what you have on your device and decide whether or not you want it. You can ignore them as long as you want, though if you ever delete the title, move servers, etc. you'll have to redownload and will get the new version at that time.
As I originally stated, I'm a V owner with limited storage capacity. Since owning my unit, I've purchased over 400 titles. For those us of that have the newer units such as the V, we do not have a choice. I'll repeat my stance that it would be nice if Kscape would give us a 14 day window before performing the update on the servers so individuals can explore their options.

Your option would be the same regardless. Your option is to buy storage so you don’t have to redownload movies you already have. You made the choice to buy a unit with limited storage so you have to cycle the titles you own if you want to watch something. The only way to avoid that is to increase storage so you don’t. That wouldn’t change regardless of time.

I purchased the V when it was first introduced. At the time, Kscape was marketing it stating that an optional storage wasn't needed. I wasn't sold the item with an asterisk to read the fine print. And you're right, V was marketed as a unit that can cycle titles. That's why my suggestion is to give owners at least a 14 day window before a title update which would give individuals the options to a). cycle titles b). increase storage. Never was it marketed that V owners would lose features on already paid items because they didn't have an external storage. And as a V owner, we aren't alerted about an update to purchased title if it's not downloaded on our system. Currently, the only way V/E/M owners get notice about a title change is through this forum. And from what I can tell, this forum is made up of mostly Legacy owners that have an external storage where they would already be notified about changes to titles downloaded on their external drive. As an authorized dealer, I hope you are telling your clients about these discrepancies.

I appreciate the sentiment expressed and realize these feelings arise more with customers transitioning from physical media. Everything described is simply a part of the digital media landscape and is a part of standard digital store terms of use. When a change happens, it’s usually because of an impact to rights or licenses, it’s immediate, and there is no warning. This is the same across Apple, Amazon, Google, Fandango, etc. K is unique in that it IS possible to (temporarily) retain an earlier version of a film digitally if you downloaded it, but this requires storage. It’s a bonus function unique to the industry (at this quality) that is offered at a premium. It is not an inherit part of K nor should it be expected by a digital consumer. I’ve long said that the transition from physical to digital can be rough, and this is an example of that.

I am not a fan of the V or the E players and generally steer my clients away from them unless that is the only option based on their budget or they absolutely have to have Dolby Vision for some reason. But from the beginning the V was marketed as having a small hard drive internally with storage for 10-12 4K movies at a time. This was never something you had to read the fine print for. And since most people don't keep movies on them in a permanent status, they have to download whatever it is they are going to watch when they want to or at some point before. So this will mean you will be downloading whatever the most recent version of the film is because that is what K stores on their servers. It is just one thing in a list of things that I think are compromises when it comes to the V/E models and why I ALWAYS recommend the C as I feel it is the best player in their lineup for many reasons but obviously comes at a steeper price point initially because you have to buy a Terra with it. I see so many dealers talk their clients into getting a V or E with a Terra and just feel bad for the people that went that route.

What you guys are suggesting is contrary to the primary reason many or most of us bought into K and that is convenience. Spending time (which could easily evolve into endless hours) curating my collection to make sure i have the "best" or most complete version of a movie is not what I was looking for with K. When DV2 is released, I'm sure will some want to replace current files with a DV2 version assuming their hardware can display DV2? This will be a long transition since the decision is based solely on the display hardware capabilities.

With K, I was perhaps naively looking for a one stop or turnkey system that allowed me to select a movie and always know that it's the best audio and best video available. Since that's not possible when acquiring disks, I should have realized it would not be possible with K.

Nevertheless, I'm at a point in my life where convenience and less busy work and fewer monotonous tasks allowing me to enjoy what I already own are more important to my lifestyle than having the absolute best of everything. Again, when buying into K, the quality limitations were never explained. It was marketed as "the best" and I bought into that concept.

Now I know differently, and I'm disappointed but not angry. I appreciate the work so many of you do regarding the limitations of the various versions and especially your tireless efforts to improve the software but even if I owned more storage than I need, I'm no longer interested in researching the version on my system ad nauseum to determine if I might want to replace a file.

I think we can all agree that "best" is subjective but "comparable" is a reasonable expectation. I believe we've seen in other threads that K has failed to meet that expectation in many cases, and K is responding to this. I view this as positive.

In regards to some of the "downgrades," it's fair to point out that impacts are undesired but minimal, and always massively outnumbered by upgrades. New player owner wanting "the best" version of the movie? Great, you're watching 4K with Atmos. There's no impact. Premiere user limited to HD? There's an impact but Premiere systems have storage.

Extras are a complicated on K.* Ideally we'd always have them. However, as I've understood K's limited resources I've decided I'd rather see more movies and accept fewer Extras. Iff Extras are important to you, I highly recommend supplementary (sale) purchases on other stores.

FYI, regarding Dolby Vision 2, you should not expect it on any pre-2026 hardware. Further, it's quite unlike Dolby Vision and is more of an image processing platform. LG invests significantly in their image processing, TCL and HiSense would rather sign a license and stamp a logo.

FYI, it looks like the recently "Restored in HD" Extras package for Prometheus has been pulled from the K Store. I was never able to successfully download this item and it appears to no longer be available.

I would have liked some Prometheus extras. There is a four-hour "behind the scenes" on Aliens on Amazon, which is really good. Hopefully, they sort out The Da Vinci Code.

Really? I wonder if this is a situation where a later "update" was actually a downgrade.... Logan previously included the B&W Noir version, but at some point that was removed (Deliberate I assume, perhaps by Disney?).
Logan has appeared in the "Recent Additions for Strato V, E, M" section. Upon closer inspection, the previously missing HD Extras package has been added to the K Store's offering. This INCLUDES the previously removed Logan Noir (B&W) alternate cut. (FYI, Logan Noir is available in 4K on disc but only HD digitally.). Great job, K!
UPDATE: Unfortunately, it appears Logan Noir is bundled in a single download with the Extras. No extras without an alt cut.

This has me nervous...Gravity is a favorite of mine and only avail in HD but with ATMOS. I am standalone V user....might reserve a spot for Gravity just in case. I keep 5 of my favorite...we can watch anytime in case of internet outage...might need to expand that...honestly only need like 2 "slots" to handle cycling titles/rentals.
