[Buyer’s Guide] Kaleidescape Quality Compared to Blu-ray & other Digital Sources

I’ll have to read it again, but I thought he said this firmware would update the store metadata, which would make the player stop over-cropping.
Maybe Mike can chime in on exactly what this firmware had because the main sheet only talks about some features that are outside of this and then "bug fixes"

Yeah, the store metadata wasn’t updated at all… Even for the upcoming Tron: Ares, the store still shows 2.40 while iTunes is 2.38.
Bummer :( And that raised letterbox without using a player mask makes no sense. He seems to think movies often natively come with raised letterbox, but that’s really not the case. Just send proper aspect ratio metadata and implement your mask later...

I think a lot of the aspect stuff comes down to control systems. Since most masking systems that have programmed positions or whatever have defined slots for 2.40 or 2.35, not in between. So if you have a movie that is 2.38, it doesn't work with programmed masking systems and if they go to 2.4 or 2.35 you end up with small bars that people complain about. It is nearly a no win situation.

Seems like having it as an option would be fine, but not as a default behavior.

99% of the (modern)scope movies out on uhd disc are 2.39 so i would say stick to that ratio , 2.38:1 is also doable but 2.40 is for me also a no go… they have to do something.

But most important thing is to get rid of that awful light grain layer they put over everything in compare of the disc versions. Just put out how it is and stop changing stuff…

Ratio and grain should be there first priority

Star Trek Beyond 2016 (UPDATE):

- Green push fixed
- Much better compression than the older version and the UHD-Blu-ray. (Ignoring the block artifacts and overcropping)

############################################################################
############################################################################

Catch Me If You Can 2002:

- Slightly better than the UHD-BD (Ignoring the block artifact)

############################################################################
############################################################################

Play Dirty 2025:

############################################################################
############################################################################

Spider-Man 2002:

-This might be the biggest difference with UHD-BD I've seen on KS yet... This has to come from a different master. Night and day Difference in grain retention, colors, and highlights brightness. Probably the highest capture-card bitrate I've ever seen.

On the "Spider-Man 2002" review, are you saying that K is much better or that the UHD disc is better?

It’s a bit odd that the colors and brightness don’t match, but overall, the Kscape version is much better in terms of grain consistency.
Spider-Man 2002 was updated last year, Atmos track added, it doesn't say anything about video improvements, but this makes me think there might have been an update to the video too.

You didn’t miss anything. They’re not defective. They need a firmware update. That’s all.
Does your player properly display content… without cropping, adding dnr, grain overlay, without block artifacts? If so … it’s not defective…
If not…, it is defective!!!!! Especially when the company advertises being reference and better than other sources. Can it be fixed with firmware? Maybe… it’s been 5 months and it’s not fixed!!!
Until it actually gets fixed… it is defective… as it’s not working as intended or as advertised, if I would have seen this thread I wouldn’t have spent 4k

They really need to give users the option to enroll in BETA firmware updates voluntarily, because having to wait several months for critical fixes to roll out is unnecessarily restrictive. Allowing an opt-in path would let those who are comfortable with early builds test improvements immediately, provide feedback faster, and help speed up the refinement process for everyone else.

Great idea!

Insane how nothing has really changed in their quality control after everything I exposed; they still mess up the colors far too often. Pixel-peeping a few screenshots against the mezzanine file would avoid all those amateur mistakes, but nah, they prefer wasting people’s time and hardware with those countless updates. What a joke, KS! They're clearly rushing their encoding, but they take months to release a fix for defective players...

Chainsaw Man The Movie Reze Arc 2025

- Red Push AGAIN! compared with two different sources: iTunes and MA.
- Worst compression than MA and Over-cropped as usual...
- Block artifacts were terrible in this one, practically unwatchable. It seems the artifacts are a lot more obvious with a grain-free source.

########################################################################

The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe 2005
- One of the worst UHD upgrades, barely any detail improvement. Barely any different than 13mbps Fandango stream...
- Perhaps a slight green tint...

#####################################################################

Roofman 2025
- Good compression

Sorry to hear about the poor Chronicles 4K quality. Sounds a lot like the Minoriy Report upgrade.

I didn’t check Minority Report on KS, but I watched the Blu-ray disc and it didn’t look bad; highlights are less blown and retain much more detail than the old master.

At this point I do not think they care...they have their fanboys ....all is good.

Yep. I’m giving them one more month to update it and then I will be the dealers worst nightmare to get my money back.. I didn’t sign up to spend 4k on a defective player, I figure 6 months is long enough to wait and be patient for a fix.. The BBB would have a field day on this.
