Strato V black screen and audio cutout issues

Given all the threads and various issues, I have lost track which ones Kaleidescape have acknowledged they have been able to produce and which ones they anticipate a fix in next software update. Hopefully we get a status on all these soon.
Let me just reiterate: if you have a reproducible issue, please report it to support@kaleidescape.com. Include the version of the movie (Dolby Vision, HDR10, etc.) and the time index at which the issue occurs. Feel free to post about it here, but unless John or I happen to see it and follow up out of band with the engineering team, they may be lost.

If you have an issue like the one described with House of the Dragon, please report that as well.

There are two releases currently in the pipeline for Strato V. The first one was already in progress when the player launched and it will have fixes for some of the issues mentioned (such as the bright line described above), but since the audio drop investigation and HDMI interop investigation are still underway I expect that the second release will be the first opportunity to address those.

I can't give release timing at this point, but I would characterize them as "really soon" and "pretty soon". They are being actively worked on but they do take time.

I have changed back to 24 hz as well. All video anomalies have been resolved, but still experiencing those random split second audio drops on almost every other title, especially DV titles. It may not be a huge deal for some, but it just takes me out of my comfort zone, and ruins my viewing experience. Even if there are a couple of stutters during a presentation, it sticks out like a sore tooth and shouldn’t happen imho. For some reason HDR10 titles are more stable

It would also help to know how many members are using this in standalone mode with an AVR/ AVP in the mix, how many are actually watching DV content.

I had posted a link to a thread on the previous page which I felt was relevant to this discussion, however if you use the forum search function and type “audio dropouts” you will see at least half a dozen threads experiencing similar issues. There are Anthem, Marantz, Trinnov processors, mentioned in those discussions. I really hope the next software update takes care of these issues.
That would bother everyone. Gotta be addressed. I'll be watching more this week, so I'll pay close attention, but no dropouts for me so far.

Hoping one of those fixes is for the edge enhancement bug.

Watched 2 HDR10 titles ; Valerian and Star Trek (Kelvin Timeline). Both played perfectly, no drops whatsoever. Unfortunately It appears that only DV titles are demonstrating those random audio drops.

On another note, Valerian looks (and sounds) spectacular. It has always been one of my go-to 4k demo discs in the past and now I’m happy to add this to my ever growing K collection.

Watched Dune 2 (HDR10 Version) and had a brief audio-dropout when coming out of pause/intermission once. Maybe 1-2 sec after video started back up of no audio.

Got my strato v last week and been putting it through its paces , have had a couple of very brief audio dropouts in various movies, more noticeable as it triggers the osd on my trinnov to restate the audio codec in use, so that draws more attention than the actual audio glitch.

Next time it happens I'll see if it's repeatable

Mossym,

As Mike Kobb has stated above, if these things happen again, I recommend you send the issue to the support team at Kaleidescape. I’ve only been an owner for a little over a year, but every time I get ahold of them (which has not been much), they have been wonderful. They can check your usage logs, see your drops, and let you know if it is an edid problem likely resident in your K-scape equipment or in another part of your chain. This data, especially when it signifies a bug in the K-Scape software, helps them prioritize their bug fixes. Take care and good luck. Tim

For sure. It is certainly helpful to everyone when we share what is working and what isn’t in our chain on these threads. Sometimes the idea for the fix can come from an owner. I had problems last year that only got solved when I sent an HDMI Audio out to my audio processor and sent the HDMI Video straight to my Lumagen. That option is not available with the single HDMI port on the V. Fortunately I haven’t had a drop with my V yet, but I am also not doing DV. I did have one “black screen” incident when I was coming out of content to the UI for the first time, but it has not repeated in the week I’ve had the device. I am thinking the unit was just reseting during its initial access to the web from my home.

As I am sure you are tracking considering the high end gear you have, HDMI is a finicky beast. You may ultimately have an HDMI cable that is running too hot or too cold. It’s like Goldilocks with those things. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your feedback and I have already written an e-mail to support@kaleidescape.com (André) as well to LUMAGEN and they also answered yesterday and will contact Kaleidescape. (about the mastering error in the Black Bars of the Dolby Vision Version)

Hello all,

First, let me apologize for being a couple of days late in responding to this thread. My attention was elsewhere late last week and I missed some posts here. Also, parts of this message will be cross-posted in a couple of threads so that folks will see it where it’s relevant to them.

I’m going to start with the most important thing: the issues mentioned in this thread are among a handful of issues that are being actively investigated at very high priority by our engineering team. We are committed to resolving them as soon as possible. Everybody from the CEO on down is aware and focused on getting them solved.

Now, let me say a little bit more about what’s going on, and towards the bottom of this post there are some suggestions for workarounds that should help until we have direct solutions.

The issue with the screen going to black after playback falls into a category called “interoperability.” In other words, issues that crop up when the player is connected to certain other components like receivers or displays, or sometimes combinations of receivers and displays. The occasional signal drops may be interop related, or they may be cable related. More on that below, but first more about interoperability.

Part of the development process of any new A/V component is interoperability testing. We’ve been doing interop testing throughout the development of Strato V, with a variety of equipment. Testing has been done in a laboratory environment, through industry interoperability (“plugfest”) events, and through alpha and beta testing in people’s homes. Contrary to speculation posted here, this testing has involved components at many price points — not just high-end flagship products. We had a Marantz processor as part of our laboratory testing setup, and while we did find one minor interop issue with that processor, we did not encounter the black screen issue. We have industry contacts with Denon/Marantz, and we will work with them as needed as we have done in the past.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to test every possible model and software revision of AV receiver/processor, display, distribution system, and cable. And so, issues can and do appear after release that need to be identified and addressed.

To that end, we do need a bit of help from you. Our players log and report diagnostic information back to us, and so if we know that your player is exhibiting an interoperability issue, our support team can flag it to the engineering team, which can use that logged information in helping identify what the root cause is. So, if you are having an issue with your player, please open a support ticket by emailing support@kaleidescape.com if you have not done so already. Provide your player serial number and a description of the issue. It's helpful if you can tell us the make and model of equipment connected to your player (i.e. your audio processor/receiver, your display, and any other intermediate gear like video processors, distribution systems, HDMI extenders, etc.)

I'd also like to publicly apologize to @Broncowrangler, whose support experience hasn't been the best. His initial contact to support was accidentally closed as a duplicate by a support team member who mistook it for a different message, and so that cost a significant amount of time in getting an initial response.

I do want to set expectations here, too -- as described by others, once you have an issue in to support, if that issue needs to be escalated to the engineering team, it can take some time for the team to investigate the issue and either come back with a solution, or with a request to the customer for additional information or troubleshooting. There are weekly meetings between support and engineering to go over all of the cases that have been escalated to engineering. Periodic status updates back to the customer are not part of that process. We'll take that as a suggestion, though.

Now, some things you can try, if you're having one of the issues mentioned here.

As already described in this thread, multiple people have reported being able to work around the black screen at the end of playback by setting the onscreen display’s refresh rate to a fixed value rather than using the automatic setting. We’ve had reports that both 60Hz and 24Hz work. I would personally suggest trying 60 first because the OSD animation will be smoother. You can access this setting through your system’s browser interface. If you don’t know how to access your browser interface, here’s a support article: https://support.kaleidescape.com/article/Accessing-the-Browser-Interface

Once in the browser interface, go to the Settings tab, select the Components sub-tab, and then click the “Settings” button for the affected Strato V player. This will open a popup window, defaulted to the Video tab. Click “Show Advanced Settings”, change the popup under “OSD Refresh Rate”, and then scroll to the bottom of the window and click OK.

Momentary dropouts during playback are often caused by issues with HDMI communication, and these are frequently related to the cable. If you are not using the cable that came with your player, please try using that cable. Kaleidescape players can be pretty demanding source devices, since we’re sending high-quality video and lossless audio, which requires maximum bandwidth from the cable.

If the supplied cable is not long enough, we’d suggest that you try another cable from the same product line. You can find them here: Pixelgen Design

Minimally, please ensure that you are using a high quality “Ultra High Speed” HDMI cable.

Also, if you have multiple devices in your HDMI signal chain, as Jim mentioned, it can often be more difficult to identify where a problem lies. A good strategy is to start by connecting the player directly to the display. If everything works well there, re-introduce other components, one at a time.

Finally, one thing that can help many HDMI compatibility issues is to limit the bandwidth sent over the cable. If your Strato V is on its default setting of "Allow Display Mode Changes", then most film content is going to be played at ~24 frames per second. This doesn't require the full bandwidth of the cable, and so setting the maximum bandwidth to 13.5Gbps may improve robustness. This is in the same Advanced Settings group mentioned above, in the section called "4K Ultra HD Support". Choose the 13.5Gbps option, then scroll to the bottom and click OK.

My infrequent audio dropouts with my Strato V have stopped since I took Mike's advice above setting max bandwidth to 13.5 Gbps to my LG OLED (via an Anthem AVR).

I am concerned I may lose some audio and/or video quality with that throttling. Am I correct?

Don

Both Andre at Kaleidescape and Jim at Lumagen are outstanding! I have started to look at how I see this hobby differently. Many of us have paid for the Ferrari but want the reliability of a Volvo. If we want to keep the Ferrari on the track, we need to be willing keep a good mechanic on payroll.

Thanks, is any K content in 60fps 4K? How could I check that?
Here you go:
You must download the HDR10 version to get the 4K/60fps version. I like to keep this one downloaded on my K to troubleshoot HDMI issues.

Gemini Man should be 4k/60 too

Nope. Gemini Man is 4K/60 on disc, but not on K. Billy Lynn is the only 4K/60 on K that I'm aware of, and only in HDR (SDR is not 60).

I actually didn’t think either were, but happy to be proved wrong.

EDIT - my bad. A quick search shows you are correct. Apologies
