NEWS: Strato V Player Announced

Ahhh.....I didn't know this. I thought that it was the same as a Dolby Atmos track being added. This is good to know.
For the titles like that which don't show up in the My Updates report, the best way to find them is to navigate to the My Movies page and apply the following filters:
  • Not downloaded to...
  • Video Quality (e.g. "Dolby Vision" and/or "HDR10").
That should help you find titles that have had new qualities made available.
In fact, while I was confirming the filter settings I recommended above, I found 5 movies in my own collection for which HDR10 or Dolby Vision versions had been added. :)

And since you wouldn't be downloading these as an update, if you want the SDR version to go away, you'll need to manually delete that version using the local browser interface, the mobile app, or the store's "Delete" option.

Will "4K DV" be added to the system browser (My Kaleidescape - Movie Library) in addition to "4K HDR10" and "4K SDR?"

It has been added in kOS 10.18.0 on both the Movie List:

and the History page:

The rollout for 10.18.0 started last week and should be completed by 05 August.

My V is arriving today. I'm expecting to go live with it showing off the UI, config, and all that on the YouTube channel as I often do in my content. For anyone wanting to see it all in action, this should help. I'll post a link and details soon. I'm aiming for 9:00 PM EST tonight (Wednesday, 7/24).

I did this last night and can confirm it works and is that simple.

Mine are arriving today to. If I get setup by then, I'll watch. Thanks for doing this after the kids go to bed😆

The stream worked out great tonight all about the V. If you want to see the whole set up/activation process, the UI, loading content, settings, and more, it's all in there. We even had a few well unexpected, special guests turn out later into the evening.

2 1/2 hours was a long time to keep talking though with a sore throat, ugh...

Just starting to watch. It’s late so probably won’t watch the whole thing tonight.

You seem excited!😆 I’ve had mine since Friday and I’m still excited!

If your running the Strato V player with a Terra server and the Strato V's local SSD fails, what happens? e.g. Nothing, e.g. SSD is used to boot OS to get to group mode so the player is bricked - warranty/RMA time, et cetera.

Thanks

This is a comment on K international pricing. I have been waiting for a reasonably priced K product, with Dolby Vision, and was delighted to hear of the Strato V - assuming the $ to £UK price would be about one to one - $4000 or £4000- even given the UK conversion rate makes the $ price closer to an equivalent £3000.

Instead the price is over £5300, or very nearly $7000!

As far as i’m aware this is the same unit, nothing is changed for the UK, so how can this massively inflated price be justified on a unit that is aiming for a lower entry point?

As someone who wants to buy K, this has put me off…

One of the main factors that has to be considered, is the distributor model in the UK, so there is an extra entity in the chain that is required to take a margin to make it work for business purposes. They also have to factor in servicing and support, so it is very rarely that easy to just convert.

Just to be clear, as a UK dealer we would love it to be selling at less, as we would be able to get more clients into the ecosystem, but it also has to work for all parties, otherwise, the product is not supported adequately locally.

This is very true but,
  1. A distributor will on average be purchasing at a lower unit cost from the manufacturer than the average US retailer
  2. A distributor will also be getting further discounts based on the level of support/service/warranty they offer in lieu of K US
  3. The product we're talking about is electronic, is minimalistic, and has very few, if any, moving parts, so the risk of failure is lower.
  4. There is obviously 20% VAT and shipping to take account of as well (Maybe VAT + £50/unit), but this no way accounts for the approximate 57% price hike ($4000>7000 approx equivalent) from US retail ex-local tax.
If a product is designed to be sold at a lower price point to attract far more customers to the K Universe, a price of £5.3K for a product with such limited in-built storage space (for 10 4K films), is not going to achieve that - based on the many similar reactions from would-be UK customers on here.

No one knows what 1. and 2. amounts to, having worked with distributors and manufacturers in the past, there can vast differences in what 1. and 2. equate to financially, especially when you are dealing with a unique product that has no natural competition in the market place.

What we also don't know is whether there are additional costs that are allocated to the UK only via Kaleidescape, i.e. legal/running costs of getting the studios onto the UK store etc. Or additional costs allocated in the UK, i.e. shipping (back to US for service), marketing, storage, demo etc. There are just a lot of variables that we don't know. Having seen it from within the system, it is not always as clear as what you think.

I don't disagree that we would like it lower to get more clients involved (but we also to have to keep in mind the entry into the ecosystem has now dropped by nearly 50% with this unit - so it is a good start), albeit with reduced storage but the addition of Dolby Vision.

Kaleidescape has always been (and will likely always be) a premium product in the UK (we have been involved since the Premier Series). The best thing you can do in the longer term, is to build a relationship with an installer, so that they can advise you when there are offers available, or prices are going to increase etc.

I decided not to get one due to the costings here. Crazy increase, who is the distributor in the (s)UK

Can this player be stacked on top of another component (Blu-ray player etc)? I’m running out of real estate in my rack or I could probably order the standalone amplifier/component stand from monoprice.

It should be fine if you put it on a non-heat producing device like an amplifier. If you just put it on a Blu-ray player or something similar, it should be fine.
