NEWS: Strato V Player Announced

So how do I get to full UI on a Strato V? Or is it not possible?
If your Strato V is grouped with a Terra server, you do have the full UI mode. You just have a different layout for Collections view. As I stated above, "Full UI" refers to having support for user-defined collections and having the Movie List and Movie Covers places. Strato V will _always_ use the horizontal collections view.
If I remove my Strato C from the system, does it revert to Full UI mode?
Your Strato C's UI doesn't change regardless. It will continue to have the Movie List, Covers, and text-based Collections view.

@J.Green , thanks for the clarification, so new collections view without list and text for the Strato V is (so far) here to stay, regardless of standalone or grouped mode.

Any plans to potentially make an option to toggle revert back to classic collections view in a future update, since you mentioned you already have refinements on deck?

Hi all, first post out here. Just picked up my Strato V from Bestbuy. Placed my order on the 17th and was really stoked to have it arrive so soon.

Plan to have it up and running in my dedicated HT over the weekend. Hoping to learn (and catch up) a lot on the fly, from the much more experienced/seasoned folks over here. I will most definitely celebrate with Furiosa (UHD/ atmos) as my first purchase on this platform.

I will still hold on to my 4k players as I have a rather massive collection of discs plus some exclusive auro-3d and other titles. Really excited to embark on this new Kscape adventure. Take care everyone. Cheers!!

Since I’m really new here, I would sincerely appreciate if I could be directed to the owners section (if there is one) for the associated player. I couldn’t find anything.

Congrats on your purchase and joining the kaleidescape family! And welcome to the forum.

We don’t have separate owner areas for different players here. Unlike many other forums for, say, cars… you’ll find the vast majority of members here that post are owners of one or more components, or possibly dealers. Regardless they’re very well informed and helpful.

For now I don’t see a need for a separate forum area just for owners of the V player, especially since many V owners will already own other components in their systems.

Thanks a lot. No worries, since I’m a regular member on Avs, I was just curious if there was a similar dedicated section. I will keep monitoring this thread and the forum in general, for future updates.

Welcome!

I watched this movie as my first full movie on the Strato V as well (albeit a K-Scape customer already) on Saturday.

It wasn’t even a movie, it was a surreal Experience.

If anyone is on the fence and wondering if the DV and upgrade is worth it (at least as a non-projector display owner), rest assured you won’t be disappointed IMO…..

I am on both forums. This one helps you “fix” and “understand” your Kscape. The AVS forum mostly attacks voyeurs that complain about the costs.

My head is spinning making sure everything is locked in and good to go as my player arrives later this week.
I'm downloading all my titles that have Dolby Vision in advance, since I have a slower connection.

The Strato V readiness report is still bugging me. 11 titles are "Not Yet Compatible" and another 14 are only available in SD. A few of these "Not Yet Compatible" are some of my favorite movies. \

I'm sure it's been discussed it here in the last few days as I've read every single post in this thread since it was announced, but I have forgotten. Have the great people at K claimed that the plan is to eventually convert all titles in the catalog to be playable on the V or was it said that may not be the case for some titles? If the plan is to do the conversion are we talking months, years, or millennia?

Yes. The stated plan is for everything to get converted while simultaneously keeping in mind that not everything goes according to plan.

I doubt the Kalendar stretches out for millennia. Nothing worse than taking so long you have to start the process all over again due to additional codec compatibility changes a few decades down the road.

Let me just re-post a snippet from a (much earlier) page in this thread.

We're anticipating that the vast majority of titles will be able to be updated, and this work is ongoing, with tranches of titles being added regularly. It is possible that a small number of titles may not be able to be updated.

As an example, one of the possible reasons for a title to be incompatible with Strato V would be if it is using the VC-1 codec, which the new chip in the Strato V does not support. For most of those titles, we'll be able to source mezzanine files that we can encode appropriately, and we'll do that, starting with the most popular titles. If we can't get access to a mezzanine file, then that title may not be able to be updated. We did look at possibly transcoding those files, but we don't think the attendant loss in quality is acceptable.

As for a timeline, I don't think that's something that we want to commit to publicly at this point. It's a high priority, though.

Thanks for going out of your way to find it. I do recall reading that now.

As someone new here because the Strato V has addressed several things (entry price, Dolby Vision) to get me seriously interested in joining, do I just PM the certified dealers? Kind of unclear on the protocol. Also have tried and looked for a list of blu ray drives compatible with Kaleidescape for disc to digital (beyond the ones they certified themselves) as I want one that can also rip 4k discs. I bought the LG WH14NS40 with an externally powered enclosure and want to make sure it works with Kaleidescape as well.

This is a comment on K international pricing. I have been waiting for a reasonably priced K product, with Dolby Vision, and was delighted to hear of the Strato V - assuming the $ to £UK price would be about one to one - $4000 or £4000- even given the UK conversion rate makes the $ price closer to an equivalent £3000.

Instead the price is over £5300, or very nearly $7000!

As far as i’m aware this is the same unit, nothing is changed for the UK, so how can this massively inflated price be justified on a unit that is aiming for a lower entry point?

As someone who wants to buy K, this has put me off…
Totally agree with you. I was ready to jump but the uk pricing is crazy £5394..

While we tested and "blessed" 3 models of USB Blu-ray drive, you don't necessarily have to stick with one of the three drives we tested. Using a different drive will almost certainly work. The only difference comes down to the success rate. The three drives we list had the lowest "miss" rate with the set of discs we tested with. However, you are free to use any other USB optical drive you want.

Per item 6 in the FAQ that is part of our Disc-to-Digital Offers Using a USB Drive knowledge base article:
Other drive models may work as long as they meet the following guidelines:
  • The drive has a USB 2.0 or 3.0 interface
  • The drive has its own external power supply
  • The drive is capable of reading DVDs and Blu-ray discs
While a USB drive that is capable of reading Ultra HD Blu-ray discs may work for cataloging DVDs and Blu-ray discs, the cataloging of Ultra HD Blu-ray discs is not supported.

This would prevent the need from owning two copies of the same title if I had two Strato V's (one in theater, one in living room)? If I have a Strato C in the theater and a V in the living room, I imagine I would still need two copies.
Can your Terra paired with a strato c still pair with a strato v without removing the strato c ?

Thanks, yeah I had seen that before but hadn't noticed that the OWC enclosure/drive combo is basically the same drive I bought, just slightly different model number (LG WH14NS40 vs LG WH16NS40 on the FAQ).

A concern I have is what happens once the Strato V is out of warranty? Do you still repair it for a fee and how long is that commitment? If you have to buy a new player is there a discount by sending the old broken player in? My fear is being locked out of the library unless I pay another $4k, or more, for whatever is the current device at the time.

Has anyone with an existing Strato C and Terra who added a Strato V had issues getting the iphone app remote to work with the Strato V?

Seems like it is only working with the Strato C, but maybe in order to pair correctly with the Strato V then the Strato C has to either be removed from the system or also turned on in order to sync correctly?

Edit: I see the drop down on the iphone app remote now that lists the Strato V....
