4K HDR Titles in K Store Missing Immersive Audio (Dolby Atmos/DTS:X)

MAttHEATLifer

Well-known member
Here is a list of the 4K HDR Titles in K Store that are missing either Dolby Atmos or DTS:X immersive audio...

Also included on list are titles missing 7.1 channel audio...

Will remove from list when they are added to the store...

Now that Cheena has provided list I have updated my list...

Cheena as Stated these to things, I assume he is talking about Fox and Universal

1. Update on one major studio whose 4K HDR titles don't have immersive audio on our service: This studio is meticulous with details. They don't do one-offs. They don't play favorites when it comes to technology. So, we can't receive separate files for us to put these together. We are told that they realize how important immersive audio is and that all their titles will receive this support, and that this is currently in the test phase internally. I can't give any more information than that.

2. We continue to work with the last major studio on the importance of immersive audio and there are some internal discussions. I can't give any more information than that.

Red are the estimated times when Movie will be updated with ATMOS/DTS:X/Lossless 7.1

Blue are titles that are not planned to be updated at this time

While not immersive - there are also titles, in the store, missing an upgraded 7.1 presentation. There are others, but not sure whether you want to include them, or not.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (DTS-HD MA 7.1)

Oh ok I get it now...
Those titles would also be good to add to the list, I want to have everything that isn’t as good as the disc based version...

Matt,

This is useful to see, thanks.

FYI: “Leon: The Professional” has Atmos in UHD but not in HDR. Not sure why...

Why did you include the Star Trek movies? They are not available in the store yet. Braveheart and The Dark Crystal are only available in HD for the time being.

Updated Leon and removed the ones not in the store in 4K yet...

Any chance that you can add titles available for Pre-Order to this list? I will not want to pre-order a title from the Store if I can get it with Atmos on disc.

Many thanks.

I will try and add preorder titles once they add what the audio is on the titles, a lot of time it isn’t posted until the title is released...

Right now only Peter Rabit has audio listed and it is Atmos...

All are missing DTS:X tracks

This list is becoming increasingly long and the titles are rarely updated - quite frustrating that so many titles are released to us K owners minus immersive audio. I appreciate this has been a learning curve for all - but surely the workflows have been adequately tested to provide at least the same experience as those buying physical media. Immersive audio is no longer a fledgling format - c'mon K sort this out.......please!!!!.

Getting serioiusly p......d off with this situation.

Has anyone with the physical disc set of JP 4K confirmed that the DTS-X track is included? I've been putting off the disc based purchase until it's confirmed and haven't checked in awhile. I know a couple of sites have indicated it would be included in that anniversary edition, but Amazon doesn't show that format in the audio section (does show MA 7.1).

I know it's frustrating for those of us that have systems that can support the highest HD codecs, but I'm not sure whose at fault. The studios are known to release limited versions, and doubt (but don't know for certain on specific titles) that K would limit what it releases on their end, clearly it's in their interest to provide the best possible video and audio version.

Unfortunately, given some of these limited releases, some of us end up buying the discs as well. Personally, I often go back to physical disc playback in my theater when the audio demands it for full immersion, and use the K version in my media room and bedrooms.

Is there a significant difference in a lot of these re-releases of movies between DTS:X and just using your audio processors DTS Neural X Upmixer on the DTS 5.1 or 7.1 soundtracks? Maybe it depends on the audio processor. I’m thinking the sound engineers just convert in a similar way vs. completely redoing the soundtrack for DTS:X? SJ

Jim, have you tried doing an A-B comparison between the immersive format vs what we are getting from K? It seems to me the issue comes down to what the studios are providing K and I am sure K is trying to get us the highest resolution/ best result.

I can tell you I can definitely hear a difference between the HD codecs and the lossy core audio/ older versions. So I'm curious if its something that is so obvious or is it subtle but once you get used to it, you can't go back? For me with just the higher resolution lossless sound, the sound is both fuller and also has more life. So going back often results in a duller sound that I really dont like. It's almost like if someone makes your favorite food a certain way and then someone else makes it but its lacking that last 10% of flavor, but that's what made all the difference.

The codec K is getting us still lossless. It’s DTS MA. The same core lossless audio that makes up the base layers of a DTS X mix.

The only difference you should detect if any, as mentioned above, is if the studio mixers did more to make the real DTS X track than your preamp Neural X upmixer can do on the fly.

I’ve tried a variety of native Atmos tracks vs the Dolby Surround upmixer. It’s hard to tell any difference at all in my experience. I have a 7.2.4 Setup.

I know Jim - perhaps I have "jumped the gun" a little, but Blu-ray.com - http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Jurassic-Park-Collection-4K-Blu-ray/200257/ are fairly reliable and it's from there I've taken the inclusion of DTS:X audio tracks from.

I have no desire to purchase discs - would rather have everything - at least the titles released in K - to have the equivalent of the disc version.

Wish I understood more about the processes and workflows involved - perhaps Mike Kobb could provide some insight. Like you though I'm sure this isn't a restriction being placed by Kaleidescape - it's just so frustrating. Perhaps K could just buy the discs - rip with MakeMKV and a 'friendly drive', then offer from the store - I jest obviously, but I feel so let down by this. I feel we've all been more than patient - though I must admit I'm not sure what else we/K can do to force the issue.

Anyone got any way in to the studios, to get their take on the situation?

@SJHT & @ TrackZ - AFAIAC there is a fairly marked difference between an upmixed 5/7.1 and natively mixed DTS:X, Atmos tracks. I must admit I far prefer the actual mix as intended by the Audio mixer/engineer to the guesswork of my processor's algorithm and lets face it that's all it is, is guesswork. I have noticed far too many misplacement of sounds by both upmixers to expect it to be a solution to not having the full immersive experience - I too am running a 7.2.4 system.

Like @JerryL in my experience the soundtracks in DTS:X/Atmos format are more dynamic and full, whereas the lossless 5/7.1 are just lacking (in comparison) in that department. YMMV

I agree guys, I can certainly tell the difference in my system, but keep in mind we can only get the very best of the offered audio track if our systems are setup correctly. Most of us have very different pieces in our systems, no two systems are the same, too many variables, so the results will understandably present differently. What are minor improvements to sound in one room, may be noticeably better in another. I know I'm stating the obvious, but all of these are factors:

1. Speakers: types, size, number, placement, etc..
2. The room itself: size (volume), ceiling height, treatments, seating, etc.
3. Audio gear: Processors, Receivers, Amps, decoding capabilities and quality, etc.
4. Calibration: quality of components, skill of calibrator, etc.. (assuming it was done)
4. Video gear (that may be affecting audio, i.e. internal decoding, etc..)
5. Individual hearing abilities (I'm weak on certain high-freq's for example)

Certainly other factors as well. Point is, what my system may allow me to hear and appreciate might not be true for someone else in their system. I also recognize that for 90% (generally) of movie watchers, 5.1 Dolby or DTS is just fine.

Personally, given the investment in time and $$ to max out the audio side of the experience, I would like to always be playing the best audio offered by the studios, wherever I find it. I still support the Store, always will, but I'll accept nothing less than the best audio available in my theater, be it K, or disc based.

Jim
