Warner Bros. for sale, D2D with new owner?

This is a rather comprehensive article on what's going on, up to 10/30/2025 at least. Warning, it looks like you only get one free article on LA Times so save the thing once you get to it if you wish to refer to it again, I didn't try Incognito mode.

Hum?! WBs streaming service in HBO/MAX, I've never tried it, I usually purchase or use another streaming service to access the same content. For instance I bought Game of Thrones on BD when it was a thing as it was less expensive to buy the discs than to have a long term subscription. In addition GOT is available on K'.
Happy movie viewing!

Paramount is the odds favorite per this article.
In addition to Paramount and Netflix, it was announced on Thursday that NBCUniversal (Comcast) is also preparing a bid to acquire Warner Bros as well. They hired Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to evaluate and structure a potential offer. A clearer picture of the situation is expected to emerge by mid-December.

I assume any of these possibilities is better for us than Netflix?

Correct. Netflix acquiring a studio is a doomsday scenario for digital ownership and digital rights.

I’ve already bought all my D2D offers now and as it’s been pointed out if Netflix bought them we can guarantee those pricks would remove everything and lock it behind a heavily overpriced subscription but at least they got rid of the basic SD sub in exchange for ads!

I also snapped up all my Universal ones too so now I’m just waiting on sales for the few left with bad offers, mostly Disney but only 66 to go and then it’s time to save for a Terra 😂.

I hope WB-related stuff stays as well supported in the K store as it has been regardless of what happens. Some of their new release prices are hard to take, but they have been consistently good with D2D and availability along with Atmos support and stuff like that.

I really hope something good happens with the DC Comics division as well. DC is actually having a really great run on the comics side compared to Marvel for some time now.

I continue to think that an acquisition from Netflix would be disastrous for many reasons. While I certainly think pulling movies from prior purchasers is a doomsday scenario, I'm not sure how likely that is to happen. Would a company launch a new effort with a massive backlash of public sentiment? Even if you're shifting digital strategies, better to pull all current listings and let prior buyers keep their stuff.

What I don't think is getting enough attention is Warner's membership in MoviesAnywhere. Paramount was never a member and that hasn't changed with SkyDance's acquisition. So, if SkyDance buys Warner will they exit MoviesAnywhere (MA)? You'd be down to Disney, Universal, and Sony with Warner, Lionsgate, and Paramount outside (plus all the minors including FilmRise/Shout! which are becoming bigger players in digital). (Also remember that Sony already has one foot out with the own streaming service (Core) that can't be linked to MA even though they're a member.) Warner dropping MA would be a significant shift in the scales, like what happened with HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

It seems like no matter what way you cut it, Warner's looming acquisition is likely to be bad news for digital consumers.

Out of fear of the unknown, I just went ahead and purchased the 94 WB titles I had sitting in D2D to avoid any future regret. Now to find the time to watch them all.
I’m increasingly worried, as it appears Netflix is becoming the top contender to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. If that happens, there’s a real possibility they could pull Warner Bros. content from Kaleidescape to make it exclusive to Netflix. Such a move could be devastating for the industry.

Well, I just found some more recent articles that seem to say WB is favoring Netflix's offer. Bummer.

From what I just read in the below article, Paramount is offering to buy everything, while Netflix and Comcast are each offering to only buy the movie portion. If that is true, I would think (hope) that Paramount has an edge. The article I posted above also gave the odds to Paramount.

Yes that’s true, few hours ago CNBC published that Netflix is leading the bid. But one promising bit of information in that CNBC article that

“Netflix has told Warner Bros. Discovery management that it would honor contractual agreements to release movies in theaters if it secures a deal to acquire its assets, people familiar with the matter told CNBC.”

Sounds like the Ellisons (who own Paramount) are tight with Trump and this could have an easier time getting past the Justice Department'a antitrust concerns. Any of these mergers would create a very large entertainment company, so I could see WB wanting a smoother process.

But, I also read the CNBC article about how Paramount is calling foul on WB's handling of the sale.

This is good news.

I also read that if Netflix bought out WB, to prove they are not a monopoly, they might have to offer the WB content to other streaming services and not reserve it for Netflix. In that case, maintaining a deal with KScape and other digital providers might be advantageous.

Realistically, if the end result is losing D2D access, how quickly would that happen?
