US BR & 4K Releases for May & June 2024

I think it was only available previously in UHD (or as we say around here now 4K SDR). But yes I never received an Update either.
Correct. The earliest 4K releases on K were all SDR only. In general they have never been revisited to add HDR (Lawrence of Arabia, Taxi Driver, The Mask of Zorro, etc.). Spider-Man stuck out as the direct sequels and all subsequent films were available in HDR On K, so that limitation was really noticeable with the prior HDR/UHD badges (similar to Mad Max).

When researching 4K titles missing HDR, I noticed that the K Store behaves like this:
If a title is released in 4K HDR, and 4K SDR is later added, it will likely show up as an update.
If a title is released in 4K SDR, and 4K HDR is later added, it shows up as a new release.

Yes, but like I said, I already have the HDR version. I have had it for quite a long time. That is not new for me.

4K SDR And 4K HDR aren’t sold separately. You bought 4K UHD back when it was called that, so you have access to all 4K versions. If the movie is downloaded to your Terra, take a look at it, you’ll see it’s 4K UHD/SDR. You can now download it in 4K HDR, which just became available.

No, I already have HDR downloaded.

Just looked at my download history. Spider-Man 4K HDR download in 2021 when I got my new Terra, so had it even before that on my previous Terra. So still wondering what is going on. Did the HDR version disappear for a while, or is there something new. Not that it matters that much, since I will probably never watch it again. Just curious.IMG_1824.jpeg

The Abyss Special Edition in 4K HDR10/SDR w/Dolby Atmos from Twentieth Century:

Aliens Special Edition in 4K HDR10/SDR w/Dolby Atmos from Twentieth Century:

YES!!!

Geez, I would have never purchased the non special editions. Oh well….

Wow. So I purchased the regular editions because I wanted the special editions and now I need to re-purchase at full price to get them in 4K? K should really do something about that or give those of us that purchased a special upgrade price. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy that they are finally out in 4K.

Really disappointing that these cost extra. They are included on other digital services.
When both versions are included in a purchase, one of the versions is generally HD (just like K). On other digital stores, to get both in 4K HDR you need to make two different purchases.

Apple has a single offering for The Abyss, but very shortly after release they flipped it from being Theatrical 4K HDR + Special Edition HD to Special Edition 4K HDR + Theatrical HD reflecting user demand. Fandango at Home (Vudu) sells two 4K HDR versions separately. With each of those purchases, you get the "other" version in HD. If you want both in 4K, you buy it twice.

Apple again has a single offering for Aliens 4K HDR, and you get the Special Edition in HD. Fandango at Home (Vudu) offers two separate 4K HDR purchases, just like The Abyss. (Note: If you buy Aliens Special Edition on Vudu and use Movies Anywhere, it may unlock Aliens Special Edition 4K HDR on Apple. This worked for me, but I previously owned Aliens Special Edition on Apple before delisting so that could be a factor.)

Another interesting thing I noticed is there's no D2D pricing for The Abyss SE 4K even though I own the theatrical version. Although the D2D pricing is only about $3 off the regular price.

Another difference between the SE versions and theatrical versions is you get Atmos with the HD SE versions.

BTW, this is fascinating to me. It’s definitely been UHD only for some time, and the listing was one of the oldest when searching the store for 4K sorted by date added (literally on the last page). So, I just assumed it was always like that (it certainly was when I bought it). I’m curious what weird string of events occurred here, but as you point out it probably doesn’t matter much now. Thanks for this info. Any chance that your “original” HDR version has Atmos?

Did you register a disc? I got D2D pricing on both Special Editions of $21.67.

I’m pretty sure Atmos is everywhere, on K and other services. But maybe I missed something?

I don’t think Kscape has any of the Toho Godzilla movies so minus one was a long shot.
Wouldn't all Godzilla movies involve ToHo? And I think I did see ToHo at the K-store, but I don't remember what the movie was. I just remember thinking "Oh they do have ToHo, so why don't we have the 4K Kurosawas!"

Also, both Abyss and Aliens HDR have Atmos audio.

I cataloged Aliens HD disk and purchased The Abyss from the KStore, usually purchasing from the KStore will include D2D for other editions.

As far a Atmos audio, I was pointing out if you own the theatrical 4K versions of Abyss/Aliens they are only offered in 5.1 on the HD versions, but are Atoms on the HD SE versions.

But checking again I'm wrong about The Abyss both HD and 4k theatrical include Atmos but the included HD SE version that's in the "Special Features" is only 5.1
