Terra 8TB SSD price increase Feb 1st

Officially both the 31TB full size SSD Terra Prime & the 123TB full size SSD Terra Prime were both discontinued in late 2025.

I know as I bought all of the remaining 31TB full size SSD Terra Prime at that time.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been both a Kaleidescape dealer as well as an enthusiast since 2005, so I’m fairly knowledgeable when it comes to Kaleidescape.
 
Yes the 12tb compact terra been discontinued.

In addition the Compact Terra 31TB SSD and the 2RU Terra 123TB SSD have also been discontinued.
 
Just to reiterate here is the complete list of current Terra models:

Mini Terra Prime Movie Server 8 TB SSD — $5995 until Feb 1st — ($7995 from Feb 1st forward)

Terra Movie Server (Compact) 18TB HDD — $7995

2RU Terra Prime Movie Server 48 TB HDD — $17,995

2RU Terra Prime Movie Server 96 TB HDD — $29,995

All other previous Terra models are no longer available to order at this time.
 
I am new to Kaleidescape and looking at terra prime servers. Curious what the rationale was to make the 18TB HDD compact one a regular Terra and not a Terra Prime? The previous 12TB/22TB/24TB compact ones were all Terra Primes to my understanding? This would seem like a step back to me for servers that are a sweet-spot combination of storage size, cost, and physical unit size.

The 18 tb is a compact terra prime

Well I was going to wait it out until I had enough to save for a 96TB but with the way things are going I picked up a 8TB mini Terra before I can’t afford any. Spur of the moment but just gives a bit more leeway to have more than 12 movies and have the full posterwall, so excited for that at least just not where things are going with electronics!
 
If this is true (that the 18TB is of the older "non-Prime" family) that is not a good sign, IMO. It would appear they are using up older stock/parts to eventually phase out the compact units altogether, perhaps. This has the potential to really increase the cost of entry for K-Scape servers.
 
A few things to point out here. First, K is fine, what we are seeing in product and pricing is the result of the demand for both storage and chips by the AI industry. AI focused companies are growing quickly, and this growth has fueled significant demand in storage and chips. This has resulted in shortages of both, and has increased costs for every company, including K. This also limits, temporarily I hope, the products K can offer because of delays in receiving needed internal components.

They have the required chips and storage to build the non-Prime Terra 18TB, which is why that model is currently available. If you can live with simultaneous playback to no more than 5 Players, and 10 minute Store downloads versus 5 minutes with Prime, then there is no reason to avoid the non-Prime chassis.

Expect higher prices for storage in the future, it's easy to see it coming given the continually increasing demands of AI. We just experienced a $2K increase in the Terra 8TB SSD, and we can expect other increases going forward.

Thanks for sharing the insight and info.. Sure seems that those requiring the minimum, additional storage will drive the 8Tb SSD demand, unless K comes up with a player(s) that over a bigger boost in storage, at a lesser price point than the player + 8Tb. That is ignoring resales, of course, whose prices have most likely just experienced a pretty good elevation in their own rights, at least for the short term.

I think at this point Kaleidescape should be in the planning stages for some kind of repair or trade in options (refurbished products) to assuage future and current customer concerns. Just my two cents.

That would be, at least, somewhat reassuring, for end users, but there are still some dubieties to assuage, for, at once, K and end users. The requisite, legal, responsibility, for the manufacturer/purveyor, being the most salient. Does the ?5 year responsibility survive resales?

And there's no issue playing 4K/HDR content from a such a Terra to a capable player? (I don't think so, just confirming)
 
I'm new to K and have just recently purchased an 18TB Compact Terra (arriving tomorrow!). It matches the specs listed above and I think is the same as this press release from 2021 (and $2K cheaper MSRP from 2021 pricing). I get that the SSD and very high capacity models (48/96TB) have 2.5Gbs ethernet, which makes sense due to the drive speeds/raid, but was there once an 18TB model with different specs? During my research, I was looking at used 24TB (4x6tb drives), and those still had 1Gbs ethernet too. The Terra Prime press release never mentions 18TB as a Prime model. Sorry for the newbie questions, but what am I missing?
 
Absolutely disgusting that Kaleidescape would not inform its user base of the increase in advance. I was about to buy another 8TB unit and had to wait until Feb 15 for my bonus to hit and could have purchased It earlier on my credit card.. i am done with kaleidescape. Too expensive.
