NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

Secondly we shouldn’t disregard feedback of members as mere casual observations. I keep reading comments which imho, is slightly disparaging towards members who exhibit hints of excitement through their feedbacks. Stuff like “subjective feedback” or “lacking any objective evidence” and “hyperbole” keeps floating around. I feel slightly offended by that approach.

You shouldn't. Everyone who's been around this field for a while knows that human perceptions are often unreliable -- it's why serious research uses blind testing. And even when perceptions are accurate, they don't tell the whole story without a technical underpinning.

Just look at the conversation around Moana's colors -- someone reported that the 4K Cinematic colors looked more vibrant and better. After realizing that there was no plausible mechanism for that to be true, given the improvements in 4K Cinematic, they dug deeper and corrected themselves that the 4K Cinematic colors were actually incorrect relative to other sources. Rmarci then reported a causal mechanism for why that would be true (the Kscape DV-to-HDR10 conversion bug that's incorrectly setting metadata and causing incorrect tone-mapping), and Kris Deering was able to report seeing it occur in just that fashion.

This is exactly the kind of things that's great about forums -- that knowledgeable people can dig into inexplicable observations and understand what's actually going on. Nobody should be offended by that.

Here’s hoping the original trilogy (unedited) get released for the 50th anniversary next year and make it to the K Store too!
I recently purchased the original (unedited version) trilogy DVD on the bay, as my old copy was too worn out & on its last legs. Lol.

This brings up something I have always thought about....We in this hobby chase and chase the latest and greatest in tech...upscale that ..upscale this... yet...we cherish the unaltered versions of our favorites. I am about to go watch Bloodsport...by myself...noone else in family has any taste...not cause its some masterpiece of video and audio..but cause its a classic. In the end its the content and the experience that matters most.

Human perceptions will be unreliable, because they’re not cyber-bots programmed for perfection and to think alike. The World would be such a boring place if we had an ecosystem like that. I’m not gonna bring out instruments designed for performance metrics to measure or question what I’m seeing. I just want to enjoy the entire experience. Lol.

I’m not going to cherry pick a single or couple of titles to come to a decisive conclusion. If one member revised his opinion, great on him. But there are several other members who were ecstatic with various other examples.

That’s great we have a few professionals who post out here. I respect their work. I don’t blindly worship them, but I do offer my undivided respect and gratitude for the work they do.

Lastly any individual who claims he understands artistic (or creators) intent, is imho…the biggest con artist.

As a DOD project (ARPANET), but not available for public use back in the mid ‘80s.
There was ye old Usenet: Differences between Beta and Super Beta
that is from '97. I worked for a company that was on the Internet starting in the early '80s. Usenet forums on everything!

In '95 I set up a dialup from Macungie, PA to somewhere in TX to get my Usenet fix.... (ACM toll free number, thank the powers that be).

sorry for the tangent.

Was just talking to a friend last night about how long we’ve been chasing these incremental upgrades : Beta v VHS --> VHS HQ --> S-VHS --> D-VHS —> LaserDisc (CAV vs CLV disks) —> DVD —> HD-DVD vs BluRay —> 4K BD.
Damn I feel old!

94 in high school I was lucky enough to have friends in college that knew a lot of credentials.

Local Dial up to the branch University, jump intranet over to the main campus (only link that local had), main campus only had links to other state universities, so I had to telnet over to another university, but it had the Internet.

Full access, but I can't even imagine the ping times back then!

; from the days of VHS/CRT to laser discs, DVD (don’t forget super DVD), HDdvd/bluray and so on.
Don't leave out Betamax!!!

When I traveled to Venezuela in 1991 to visit a 60,000-square-foot hacienda, I was staying across from a military air base. While watching a Frank Sinatra World War II movie, I remarked, "Boy, this little TV sounds great." Moments later, a bullet came through the window.

It turned out that an AC-130 gunship was firing its 105 mm howitzer toward the runway. During the attempted coup, Hugo Chávez had dispatched platoons to seize the country's television stations. Unbeknownst to them, they were expecting Betamax equipment, while the stations were actually using Betacam, preventing them from broadcasting their message. The coup ultimately failed.

The thing is though you were very quick to jump on the KScape hate wagon after reading the Rmarci thread and now all of a sudden, you buy a K and it’s all sunshine and rainbows and it’s fine to discount technical testing…

You can’t have it both ways and what happens if he checks them out and then says there are differences but it’s not because they’re better, it’s because they’re wrong?!

All that being said, even if I want to see technical comparisons before jumping in, I don’t agree with people throwing water on early adopters enthusiasm. It’s part of the joy of a new toy/tech especially when it’s on the cutting edge and something new.

I can have it any way I want, when I spend my own money…go sue me.

This is what I'm starting to think about myself. Here is a great video which discusses the addiction: ;)

Bloodsport UHD disc has an awesome transfer.. looks wonderful

I was telling the majority of my clients to skip the E/V depending on their situation as I honestly wasn't a fan from the get go and felt the C was the better player so long as they had plans to get external storage (Terra) at some point. I stand by that position even today. Only reason to get a V/E over a C is if you absolutely need DV (which most don't, but you know, FOMO is a mother) or they had zero plans to ever buy a Terra in the future. No video bugs, no compatibility issues, dual HDMI outputs and a full 4K interface. The hype train on the V/E was insane and I never understood it. Would have been WAY WAY WAY easier for me to just do the typical rah rah rah stuff you see from all the influencers and such and just tried to get people to buy buy buy. Anyone that knows me knows I don't do that at all. I try everything possible to be as honest and straightforward as possible, even when it costs me sales.
The biggest thing the E/V did was allow a lot of folks to get into the platform because of the reduced price of entry for a "complete" working Kaleidescape system. That was the real story IMO of the V and then the E, which made it even less expensive. Otherwise, I agree if you had a server or were buying a server (without a specific Dolby Vision requirement), the C remained the preferable option. I've worked with a lot of folks that couldn't or wouldn't spend for an additional server, but could buy a E/V player.

I now do feel that the K is the preferable option, if one can afford it.

It's great to see all the emotional energy in hopes of the absolute highest fidelity, highest measurable and experiential qualities. Hats off to Kaleidescape for continuing to refine and push the limits of what's possible. They clearly show a 25+ year track record of pursuit of the very best - with a straightforward, honest, "let's continue to refine this thing" mindset. We'll continue to see improvements in the movie files along with what we're already seeing in the ever-improving Strato and Terra products. I ordered my Strato K the day of the announcement and received 3 days later and we love it. Our family has had several Kaleidescape products over the years and each is better than the one before. Steve Jobs said it well: "Stay hungry. Stay foolish."
