NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

@Techthusiasm, I have a sincere question for you in your capacity as an authorized Kaleidescape dealer.

Your website advertises that the additional color and image data in 4K Cinematic “produces incredible visuals” and delivers “a dramatic leap beyond today’s 4K.” Your article also says that 4K Cinematic is “the feature you’ll actually feel in your theater today,” and states that the improvement is visible on the 4K projector or television users already own.

Those are stronger claims than simply saying the files contain higher bitrates or more chroma data. They tell prospective customers that they should expect an actual, visible picture-quality improvement.

Have you asked Kaleidescape directly whether it officially represents that 4K Cinematic produces a reliably visible picture-quality improvement over the corresponding conventional 4K version?

More specifically, has Kaleidescape verified through controlled comparisons, perceptual testing, or objective image analysis that the additional chroma information and bitrate produce the visible improvements described in your advertising?

If you have asked Kaleidescape, could you please share its answer and any supporting methodology or evidence it provided? As both a dealer and an owner, I think it is important to distinguish between personal viewing impressions, technical specifications, and picture-quality improvements that Kaleidescape has actually tested and substantiated.
For the item descriptions on my web page, I use the summary copy as stated by the brands along with their stock images. If I have videos with my perspective on a particular item, I will embed/link them on the product page as well. That's similar to what Audio Advice does - basic marketing copy with some individual perspective, theirs is just written.

I suppose the brand copy can get a bit enthusiastic at times, including this one, rather than being only technical. I plan to continue to develop the site as a customized reference resource and augment existing copy with more detail, personal takes, and less brand-written hyperbole. It's just a lot of work and a slow process.

If you want to see me asking Kaleidescape technical questions about the K and the new formats, I did an hour long interview with @MikeKobb, which is on the channel in my podcasts. I should link that video on the product page too.

If you want a super objective take on 4KC and the K though, I think you're going to need to wait for @Rmarci to do his pixel peeping work and share the results. Otherwise, you're only going to get more of the same feedback and perspective you're already reading regularly in this thread as more people get players and share their thoughts.

I agree with my partner, we all, me included, killed the horse a dozen pages back. Time to recognize no one posting is wrong, just different opinions that don't really need ongoing defensive posts, and aren't going to change. Let's move on.

For anyone wants to have another source of comparison in order to evaluate what kind of difference you will be seeing from Strato K. Youthman just posted a video in his YouTube channel. Personally I found that video is much less of dealer BS.
I also like Jaremy's video from Techthusiasm. His family did notice a difference. Regardless, I love new tech and can't wait to try it.

Maybe have people nominate the gems and make a thread for each of those?

This thread has some good ones:

add this video to the ones circulating around. The parade continues. This time, an eagle-eyed young videophile couple conducted an in-depth comparison of Kaleidescape 4K CINEMATIC against conventional 4K HDR. Personally, I will never allow any other type of content onto my server.

What is this trying to say? Everyone can see video quality improvement on 4k cinematic 4:4:4 vs 4:2:0? and while wearing glasses? Or this is just another promotion marketing material? I heard 4k cinematic could do 3D pop already, although I couldn’t see any of those on my screen.

Those are not their real names and perhaps they preferred to stay incognito while wearing the 3D glasses. There is nothing of promotion to this group in that video is part of an overall battle between a Miami VideoWall outfit vs a Hamburg one over at avsforum, 80% of the content is a testimonoal that cinematic looks better and NO not everyone knows otherwise they would not have travelled here to see the difference. Dont tell me you live in the pacific northwest too.

Its been interesting following this thread. For me I've always been interested in Kaleidescape but it wasnt worth it for me since I run my own Plex server. It wasn't until the K was released before I finally decided that it was enough for me to make the switch. And quite honestly I'm glad I did.

There's been so many times I've just been wowed at the quality. And maybe its all placebo or its too subtle but at the end of the day it doesnt really matter because I've been super happy.

Granted this might be different for someone upgrading but for me this was enough for me to happily make the switch and jump into it all.

Now we just need Strato C² Kaleidescape. I see this as the Strato K without an internal hard drive for those of us using Terra servers. That way we aren’t paying extra for a hard drive we cannot use.

@MikeKobb

Remember the reason why the pre owned Strato V's and E's are selling much faster than the C is because someone aspiring the enter the K landscape would like to buy a device with the drive over no drive.
So for long term value the K with the drive has a much better resale opportunity down the road.
My two cents..

The player does need a drive to boot up it´s operating system anyway. The C has one as well. And we know that the kOS and the content storage are on the same drive. So the price difference would actually be the difference between a small and a 1TB SSD.
I don´t know if that difference is worth the effort to introduce a separate model into the line-up.

If anything, on the player side of things, they might want to offer a K with a larger internal SSD (8TB?).

I think K-scape’s server lineup badly needs revamped. Every Terra should have a field-replaceable drive(s) and 2.5Gbps internet connection. I might even also go so far as to move to all SSDs and abandon HDDs. As we start hearing of HDD servers failing and turning into expensive, unserviceable bricks, it’s going to be a lot of negative PR for K-scape. It’s not a matter of if the HDDs will fail, only when.

In general, I agree. However, not with the SSD-only statement. SSDs are still just so much more expensive than HDDs and speed is more than enough for standard usage. I think we just need some new smaller capacity HDD-based full sized (=with replaceable drives) Terra servers.

I have a previous gen Compact Terra Prime 8TB HDD w/2.5Gbps and I upgraded to 5Gbps fiber when Cinematic was released. I was hoping that I would see a notable speed improvement (even with the HDD unit) but downloads peg out around 1150 Mbps. A bit better but not much of a gain over my previous 1GBps fiber service which got me upwards of ~900 Mbps.

Good news is AT&T pretty much halved the cost of 5Gbps in the DFW area at $125/mo now. At least my network no longer slows to a crawl while downloading a movie. No more "DAD! SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE INTERNET" yelling from across the house.

I have wondered about how K can make storage more accessible to larger audience. I understand storage is there money maker and I understand the requirement by studios which has lead to how things are now. But while I can accept $4-5k for a media player....the cost of terra servers to me is just beyond acceptable. Luckily I have been fine just sticking with standalone.......but have hoped there was a way to upgrade the internal storage of the player....2, 4tb...I really do not need to be able to store my entire library. Of course that could only happen if the HDs come from K and most likely require dealer to install or something. But I think standalone users would appreciate a way to upgrade some...a middle ground of sorts. Even 2tb...I would be happy since it would cover my demo needs and viewing habits. Its doable with 1tb...but have to limit my demo scripts :(

I agree. I’m sure K-scape will evolve the Terra and Strato internal drive options in a more customer friendly approach, long term. Until then, I’m going to be on the sidelines with increasing my storage. I could definitely use more storage, but current options don’t excite me. When my 22TB Terra HDD inevitably becomes a paperweight, it’ll be a tough pill to swallow. A lot of people seem to be managing that risk by selling their servers with some warranty remaining and then buying a fresh server.

OUch...I probably should take back what I said about storage from K being unacceptable.....I got notice from my NAS that one of the raid drives has failed..........went to Amazon to find replacement.........holy crap!... These prices for storage are stupid...no thanks. AI needs to die a horrible death.
