NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

@J.Green so will our enjoyment of the K, on an OLED, be enhanced from a 444 passthrough or can we just leave it off and use normal DV/Filmmaker etc? I was not quite sure from the posted engineering answer above. It seemed to indicate there will be some partial improvement without 444 passthrough.

I need to do some reorganizing in my rack and after this pic I'll probably push the K devices further back in the mounts so that the screws won't show should I go the Strato K route.

Good to know you can push those things further into the rack. I hadn’t thought about that.

Yeah, I’m just gonna repeat the K is an ugly bugger compared to an E or M.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say the blinding disco lights might actually be a blessing in disguise. 🤣

Cue up Saturday Bright Fever on the Kscape! 🤩
I have a Strato V and Mini Terra Prime and whilst you’re entitled to you opinion on the looks, in terms of build quality they V and larger chassis are much nicer. Not to say the Mini is bad but folded metal vs. Aluminium/glass combo is no comparison. The Mini reminds me more of a Netgear switch whereas the V and the like are more like an AppleTV/Macbook styling.

A lot of brands use folded metal even in the high end but aluminium isn’t just nicer. My power amp is a thick laser cut aluminium body from Apollon Audio with a gloss black paint finish and it’s literally the nicest thing in my rack but not the most expensive!

With regard to the HD re-encoding project, just like the Strato V/E/M, the Strato K will not play a title yet if it still awaits re-encoding. For example the following title will not play yet on the Strato K:

Having said that, out of the over 1000 HD titles in our library, the above title is the only remaining that needs re-encoding. The Strato C does play it of course. So my solution is to continue to keep the Strato C hooked to same display device as the Strato K in order to play it.

Cheers,
Alan
I just added that title to my Wishlist. Thanks!

Yes, of course, looks are subjective. And I agree with you regarding the folded-metal construction.

That said, I wouldn’t make the Apple TV or Mac mini comparison (I know you said MacBook) purely in terms of appearance. As I mentioned earlier, A/V equipment doesn’t need to be physically larger to be better. An Apple TV and especially a Mac mini are good examples of that. A Mac mini can edit multiple 8K video streams and drive several displays simultaneously, yet it’s barely larger than a couple of decks of cards.

For that reason, I don’t see any technical requirement for an 8K movie player to occupy as much space as the K. The larger chassis likely has more to do with maintaining the form factor of previous Kaleidescape products and existing rack-mounting solutions than with any necessity imposed by the hardware itself.

I’ll be picking up a K, but I’ll also be first in line to trade it in for any future K Mini / DV2 / enhanced multicolor disco-strobe edition that comes along. 😊

And also whether you’re sporting a projector as well. Storage space is NOT infinite. Why would I want to clog my overpriced Terra server(s) with two copies of every movie — effectively reducing their storage by 40 to 50 percent?
I’ll be moving my V to the living room when I get the K. Right now my thinking on space management is to keep Cinematic versions stored on my Terra and just download and delete other versions as needed for the V.

I’m keeping my standalone V for a while but for those with mixed player systems and a server this really does create a storage and download issue now that I see many discussing it. Before you just downloaded one 4K file good to play in one room and pick up in another. Now it’s a bit of a mess having to potentially download 2 copies and eat up way more storage and detracts from the simplicity of K-scape. Sure K-scape would be happy for everyone to have a K in every room but that’s not feasible and most usually have only one location for their critical viewing anyway. It would have been nice for the V/E/M to playback the cinematic files but whether that’s technically possible or not will never happen.

I’m still happy that there is a new format that’s theoretically better than disc now but I’ll sit this one out for a while and see how it all pans out.

Well, I just ordered a Strato K. The whole idea of Kaleidescape has been the premise that it is not constrained to the limits of a a BD-66 or BD-100 disc. This new 4K Cinematic format no matter how small the difference is finally delivers on that premise! I have a high performance sports car home theater, this new Strato K is basically high octane fuel. If I had an OLED TV I would definitely not invest in a K. However, for a large screen top of the line projection system? How can you NOT want a Strato K if you are already in the KScape ecosystem? Again, now matter how small of a percentage of an uptick in performance. This is the product we have been waiting for.
Darthbishop79, just out of curiosity what does your system consist of? I’am assuming you have a projector based system? I recently ordered a Strato K and I will be using it on a LG G6 97 inch OLED hoping it will result in a noticeably difference. I will keep you posted with my thoughts when I get the K next week 😃

I'd be curious to see your thoughts on how it looks given the older panel tech used in the 97" vs the other G6 sizes. I'm looking forward to hearing of your experience!

If you download the new 4K Cinematic format and wait to delete the old, 4K version after the Cinematic download is complete then any collections you've added that movie to will be preserved. If you delete the old version first, collection memberships will be lost.
In that case suggest an “Upgrade to 4K Cinematic” button which would manage this for the user.

As soon as it arrives I will let you know. I was very happy the V in my system on the G6, I see you have a K in your system in list of components you have. What is your thoughts on it with your LG G6 65 inch?

My K should arrive on Wednesday. I'll let you know after I get it hooked up :)

Sounds great, mine is scheduled to arrive next Monday. I see you have a couple ML subs? I just ordered 4 ML Depth 215’s from my dealer, hoping ML ships them soon😃

With an extra large screen (135” and larger) I’m thinking the improvements with the K will be more noticeable? I currently use the C with a 145” screen.

Well, ok then. Honestly, I'm intrigued by what I'm seeing. I think it's slightly unfortunate that there isn't a second HDMI audio port as this would make the player equal or superior to the Strato C on every bullet point. I realize this is likely cost related, but it's the flagship. This doesn't affect me personally though, so no harm done.
And still no 3D support [announced yet] outside of random anaglyph editions. Surely Apple wouldn't mind sublicensing their AVP conversions to hedge on the general retail market.

Add me to those who’d kill for 3D support. I shoot 3D photos and videos when not watching movies. In the old days I used to link two camera bodies together. These days I use a Canon R5 Mark II with a duel fisheye VR lens. Like others in the forum, I’ve got quite the collection of 3D films on disc. Although I focus mainly on true 3D productions, not the post production fake stuff.
