Star Wars 1977 - Original Theatrical Release

DNR is not what it used to be... it 'can' be done nowadays without compromising the film grain structure (if the director wants it that way). There are plenty of horrible examples out there, though - Terminator 2 4K UHD is probably the best known example. Personally, Id be happy to keep the original film grain - although I strongly suspect we will see something akin to the latest 4K release of Aliens. This was pristine in terms of noise, but it also removed almost all the grain and managed to totally divide fans of the film. The DNR in Titanic 4K UHD was a much better example of how DNR can be used without compromising the original film grain too much.... Whatever Lucas decides, it will divide fans either way....
There are pics out there of the work in progress to get a feel of what it will look like. Those movies look like that because they went through an AI process because that’s what Cameron wanted, it was not traditional or careful DNR by human hand. No idea why you would think these would look like that since the only movies that do look like that are Camerons. Disney’s 4k restoration work on their animated classics is top tier. And Lucasfilm assembled a team to restore these, so there is nothing to indicate they will do what James did to his movies.

I’d like 1977 Star Wars, meaning the original screening presentation without Episode 4 in the crawl, with the print cleaned classically, 4K HDR grade, with options for original audio and Atmos.

Also I thought The Terminator was the only Cameron 4K with no obvious flaws from the AI-supported remastering.

This popped up on Amazon recently.

Region free and claims to be original theatrical releases.

Maybe this isn't as far away from being something offered to us too?

I don't think these are "original" versions, just the "original trilogy."

Just thinking next year it will be 50 years since the original Star Wars was released, makes me feel old . 😳

Yup, crazy how fast the time passes. I returned from an overseas assignment in April '77 to testify at the Chris Boyce espionage trial, then stopped by the farm for a few weeks before heading to NY to visit family. The day I got there everyone was prodding me for info about my job, but I declined to discuss anything. They were persistent right up to the point that we decided to see the recent release of Star Wars. For the next several days before my departure all we discussed was that movie!! 😂

Was that the Falcon and Snowman case?

We are. ;)

I had not heard about the movie (I was a week from turning 5), but the week it came out I was spending time at my grandparents' house. My parents liked to separate my brother and I for some time each summer - probably a good idea for everyone's sanity.

So anyway, while I was at grandma and grandpa's, my mom took my brother to see Star Wars. They came to pick me up and the first thing he did was start rubbing it in my face that he got to see Star Wars already. I was bawling my eyes out and I didn't even know what a Star Wars was, but it must've been pretty cool, right?

So the trip home was a 2 hour drive. We made it about 45 miles before mom turned off and found a movie theater playing Star Wars so I could see it. I tried to argue that my brother should have to wait in the car since he'd already seen it, but I lost that battle.

Great story !!

I need to watch that movie again ! Jeff

I was only involved because of an allegation involving Australia (one of my AO's). I had nothing to do with the actual espionage case.

I know that my question is a bit off topic, but the Star Wars movie collection is on sale today (May the 4th be with you!). Are the original trilogy movies worth picking up? How is the audio and video? The movies are 45+ years old, so I am not expecting too much!

The prequels were terrible for me but a couple of the sequels were okay to watch. So is the whole collection worth buying? Around $7.50 a movie.

Thanks all.

I haven't ever bought the prequels, but the remastered 4K versions of the original trilogy are well worth it.

Actually this brings up an uncommon scenario on the store that goes against the "We'll always show you the lowest price available" promise when it comes to content sets and sales and completing your set. CC @MikeKobb

So I have all the Star Wars titles except for the 3 prequel films.

If I go to the Skywalker Trilogy Content Set, it shows that I can complete my set by buying the 3 prequels at $9.99 each, totaling $29.97, reflecting the sale price of those three titles.

HOWEVER, there is also another content set for The Prequel Trilogy that is also on sale for $24.99, meaning there IS a lower price available than the other content set.
