So many amazing cinephiles here on the forum, thought I'd give this a try!

Recommend me a great movie:

Audience:
me, my wife, and two adult kids (25-year old gril, 28 year old boy).

Restrictions: None really... no young kids in our group. Violence and sex stuff are OK if not ridiculously over the top, but too much killing will drive wife from the room (like definitely not a John Wick type thing)

Desired Genre: psychological thriller, optionally with a time travel or sci-fi element... some might call them "mindfuck" movies.

Similar to: we've all really liked most Christopher Nolan and Alex Garland movies/series, and similar things, e.g.: Ex Machina, Memento, Inception, Devs, Severance, Interstellar, and at least the book "Dark Matter" (though didn't think the new Apple TV+ version was up to the level of the book.)

Less appealing to us: anything too "paranormal", definitely no religious themes, not too much into heavy supernatural stuff.

Possibilities / Seeking Opinions:
  • Anyone seen "TimeCrimes" and have an opinion on if it's good given the above preferences?
  • Jacob's Ladder?

What else should be on our viewing list?
Great movies, no "schlock" or silly type movies, but fine if it's lesser known, foreign, or an undiscovered gem you have loved.

Thanks!

Devs was great. Severance was a slow build, and I've been patiently waiting for season 2. 😴

I almost recommended these, but you said movies, so... ;)

I'm going to throw in just a couple of TV shows that maybe everyone hasn't seen yet, so as not to get carried away (too late).

I would love to watch Legion on Kscape. It's a visual extravaganza. 🤩

This one crosses more into horror, but has very much a Flatliners vibe to it.

I was going to nominate 12 Monkeys but I see that someone beat me to it.

Oh, and someone also mentioned Arrival. It's very hard for me to nominate a "favorite" movie, but that one is probably as close to the top of my list as it's possible to be. The less you know about it going in the better. Just be content to know that it's about the arrival of extraterrestrials on Earth and the attempt to communicate with them and go from there.

great ones. Seen them both, but now I'm going to add both to my "Watch Again" list on my Kaleidescape.

One of my all time favourite sci-fi movies -

I had forgotten about this one. A lesser known film but quite intriguing all the same. One of Ashton Kutcher’s best performances imho.

The K offering is great because it includes the alternate cut and vastly superior ending.

This has to be coming to 4K soon. I’m waiting for that for my next re-watch. Like Gravity.

Definitely waiting for 4K versions since both titles available in SD only for Strato V.

But how could I forget this!

One of my favorites, and one of the first movies I worked on. Unfortunately you'll need to acquire a Region B Blu-ray to watch it. I'd really love to see this in 4K with immersive audio one day...
One of my favorite movies of all time. The sound mix is amazing! I have the AC-3 and DTS Laserdisc and the region B Blu-Ray. Wow! The voices when whoever has the wig talks is almost like todays Atmos. Especially now with DTS Neural:X.

Shutter Island appears the mentioned many times. Trap is decent too

I agree the audio is amazing on this. I have the German Blu-ray. This was ahead of its time

Late to the game, I know...but...
This used to be in the Kscape store. In fact, I own it. It's brilliant.
I hadn't realized that this went out of circulation! I own it, thankfully. Great movie, and better than the remake (Vanilla Sky) in my opinion. I currently have this on pre-order from Umbrella (Australian Boutique Label):]
Umbrella, being both boutique and foreign (Region B), generally doesn't impact digital distribution. I wonder if one of the US/UK boutique labels grabbed it for a remaster.

Interesting, I had not heard of this label before. Thank you. Yes, I don't think there is one person out there that could possibly prefer the US remake. I can't imagine another director recapturing the oddness of the unconventional cinematography and brilliant acting.
I need to explore more from Alejandro Amenábar, for certain.

The German import disc was the reason I bought my first region-free Blu-ray player. :) Truly the first "immersive" surround sound I ever experienced. And with a mere 5 channels. I can only dream of a 4K/Atmos release of this film.

Looks like K only has the director's cut in SD, though. :/ I've never actually this this cut, but I think it'd be worth picking up the Blu-ray for a few bucks. Interesting side note, I see the disc has a rare DTS-HD MA 6.1 track--don't see many of those compared to 5.1 and 7.1. :)
