So many amazing cinephiles here on the forum, thought I'd give this a try!

Recommend me a great movie:

Audience:
me, my wife, and two adult kids (25-year old gril, 28 year old boy).

Restrictions: None really... no young kids in our group. Violence and sex stuff are OK if not ridiculously over the top, but too much killing will drive wife from the room (like definitely not a John Wick type thing)

Desired Genre: psychological thriller, optionally with a time travel or sci-fi element... some might call them "mindfuck" movies.

Similar to: we've all really liked most Christopher Nolan and Alex Garland movies/series, and similar things, e.g.: Ex Machina, Memento, Inception, Devs, Severance, Interstellar, and at least the book "Dark Matter" (though didn't think the new Apple TV+ version was up to the level of the book.)

Less appealing to us: anything too "paranormal", definitely no religious themes, not too much into heavy supernatural stuff.

Possibilities / Seeking Opinions:
  • Anyone seen "TimeCrimes" and have an opinion on if it's good given the above preferences?
  • Jacob's Ladder?

What else should be on our viewing list?
Great movies, no "schlock" or silly type movies, but fine if it's lesser known, foreign, or an undiscovered gem you have loved.

Thanks!

P.S. Both Timecrimes and Jacob’s Ladder are personal favorites.

Wow, never heard of that, but YES, that looks excellent for my group! On the list!
(Hope you don't mind, but i edited your post to include a trailer so others with an interest can check it out.)

Have you seen Shutter Island?

You probably must have seen this, but I will leave it here anyways. Fantastic cast. On sale currently on K.

The Prestige -- one of my all-time favorites. Christopher Nolan (director) before everyone knew who he was.
Talented Mr. Ripley (especially now that the remake TV series won an Emmy).
The Conversation: How can you go wrong with Hackman and Coppola?
Seven: A classic that you have to watch more than once. Fincher keeps you guessing (w Brad Pitt).
Manhunter (early Michael Mann): SD only on K-Scape.
Don't Look Now (directed by Nicolas Roeg).
Blow Out -- a taste of Brian De Palma.
Repulsion -- tough to turn down Catherine Deneuve.

P.S. I did not include Silence of the Lambs because I'm sure you've all seen it.

Two other movies are:
Predestination... I haven't seen this, but have heard it's fantastic and I bet it hits all the marks you mention.

Also, In The Shadow of the Moon is only on Netflix, I believe. Should also check all the marks and I thoroughly enjoyed it as well did the other adults in my family.

Uno Mas….

This is one of my all time favorites.

I second this!

Yes! And a good one.

Good ones. I should rewatch Preatige and Mr Ripley. Remember liking them but can’t recall enough details. Never seen Conversation - added it. Seven - worth a rewatch. Will add Repulsion - know nothing about! Thanks!

Predestination sounds good - anyone actually seen it?

Excellent one. Loved it.

Great movie but I put it in the crime drama category rather than psychological thriller

Going slightly more into the Sci-Fi realm, I'd recommend:
and for one with some time travel in it, I'll add:

Thanks! Seen Looper and enjoyed. Never heard of Moon. On the list!

A handful from my collection.

I've seen it, but didn't remember much. Looked up my review on letterboxd and found I'd watched it in 2015, and here are my notes:

Very interesting film. When I put it in I assumed it would be your typical run of the mill time travel cop film that we've all seen. Then the conversations began and I was starting to wonder if I'd put in the wrong disc. But then it got good! Some very good twists and turns, though I'm guessing many viewers are left wondering.

3.5/5, liked it.
