Popcorn Ready - Chrome extension for Kaleidescape users

When you say that you'd like to filter by ratings, are you talking about rotten tomatoes scores or MPAA ratings?

For the local interface, try going to the generic http://my-kaleidescape.local/movies as the content script won't work if you navigate directly to the IP address of the server.

Excellent. It worked. I was using http://my-kaleidescape/movies. I did not know that having 'local' makes a difference.

Yes. Ratings like R/PG13 etc. It would help easy to choose movies for kids or appropriate audiences. Appreciate all your your efforts and I am not going to miss needing iPad just for second screen app and it is adding lot more now.

Interesting on the link....your link without .local doesn't actually work at all on my network. I can navigate directly to an IP address though. I can probably make this content script work on all of these variations.

Yes, MPAA Rating would be an easy filter to add as I already have it in the data. Good idea! I'll add that in the next version.

The ".local" variation relies on Bonjour which is typically on a Mac by default, but may not necessarily be installed on a PC. A simple way to add it to a PC is to install iTunes.

Andy
Thanks for that info. Yes, I'm on a Mac. I adjusted my content script matching to support both variations in the next release as well as a direct IP in the next release.

"*://my-kaleidescape.local/movies*",
"*://my-kaleidescape/movies*",
"*://192.168.*.*/movies*"

Is it available on mobile phones? I tried on Fold phone and it says currently unavailable. Not sure if it is a temporary issue or limitations due to screen size. Thanks.

No, Chrome for Android (or iOS) doesn't fully support regular Chrome extensions. If I decide to try to make it mobile friendly I'll likely focus on iOS, but if that gets done then I think Firefox for Android supports chrome extensions. I think for now I'll keep it as Desktop only though.

Yes, it's focused on the movies that you own on your Kaleidescape account and recommendations based on those movies. I do have the full catalog of everything available on Kaleidescape with enhanced metadata from TMDB and that is stored locally, but I have not made a UI to just browse/search/filter the catalog and I'm not sure that really adds much value as the Kaleidescape movie store already has much of that functionality.

Right now if you tried the app without a Kaleidescape movie store account, I don't believe you'll see anything besides a message telling you that you need to login to Kaleidescape on their website first. But if there was value in expanding it to be a Kaleidescape catalog viewer as well, that wouldn't require a Kaleidescape login.
I suspect the question was focused on whether those with a Premiere system, and thus using imported content not available on the K store, could still use the extension's functionality.

Ah, I'm not familiar with the Premier system as I'm a new Kaleidescape user. But, no, this application would not work currently unless your movie library comes from here My Movies

If there's some similar URL for Premier users that allows me to get your library, then I'm sure it's possible that I could add it though. I'd need someone to send me the details though.

I just loaded your masterpiece to Edge (I am using a Mac). Excellent. Thanks.
That's great! I didn't test on anything besides Chrome so I'm glad to hear that it works on Edge and Brave (as Josh mentioned). I just asked the AI, and here's the list it gives for desktop browsers that should work.
  1. Google Chrome - Full native support as the original platform
  2. Microsoft Edge - Complete support for Chrome extensions
  3. Brave Browser - Full Chrome extension compatibility
  4. Vivaldi - Complete support for Chrome Web Store extensions
  5. Opera - Supports most Chrome extensions directly
Some other Chromium-based browsers like Yandex Browser also support Chrome extensions, but the browsers listed above offer the most complete and seamless compatibility.

Firefox and Safari have their own extension ecosystems and don't support Chrome extensions without significant modifications or the use of third-party tools.

Shoutout to @Greg.Ca for this idea in the thread he started here: Share Library Request

This is one of the more fun features that I've added in Popcorn Ready. I need to do some more testing first before I submit this version to the Chrome Web Store, but I have the functionality working now to export your movie library and give it a name. Then other users can import your library if you send your library file to them. Then they can easily switch back and forth between their own library and any imported libraries and all of the search/sort/filter functions work on whichever library you're viewing.

This would also allow you to share your library with friends that don't have Kaledidescape and they could view your library in PopcornReady to help decide what to watch when they come over for a movie night. Super fun idea Greg.Ca!

Version 1.1.0 is published in the Chrome web store now. This has the library sharing features as well as the MPAA Rating filter. Also the content scripts for the local webpages are more broad to work on the various links including direct IP address.

Would love to hear feedback especially on the library sharing functionality as that was a pretty large enhancement. Thanks in advance!

Since Chrome does not support extensions on Android, did anyone test on any other chrome based browser that this works on a Samsung tablet? I am planning to buy one. Thanks.

I personally don't have an Android tablet to test, but my understanding is that Microsoft bought the Kiwi browser and integrated it into Edge for Android. They're starting to roll out extensions in Edge but I don't think you can get them from Chrome Web Store yet as far as I can tell from reading. I believe on Kiwi you could install extensions from Chrome Web Store but development has now stopped on that browser.

By the way, as far as I know, the Chrome extension limitation also applies to Chromebooks.

Would love to hear more from anyone that has Android or Chrome OS devices and is willing to play around and test.

@OUTATIME this is fantastic, thank you!

I'm using your Popcorn Ready extension to export a CSV of my full purchased collection, and make a Google Sheet of all my movies on server, be it K or Plex. This way friends can browse and select remotely before they arrive.

I finally got around to trying this out, and this is really cool work @OUTATIME ! Very generous of you to share your time and talents.

It's cool that an IMDB search will show if it's available in KScape, and while I have no idea if it's possible, or how much effort it would take, it would also be cool to be able to do the same with:
  • Rotten Tomatoes searches. That's where I personally go rather than IMDB to learn something about a movie or show

  • I also use Trakt.tv and JustWatch.com when I want to see where a given movie or show might be available - if this extension could be used there as well, that would be awesome
Regardless, thanks again!!

Cool, glad you like it!

I would think it would be fairly easy to add content scripts for RT, Trakt.tv, and JustWatch.com. Only problem is that I haven't been in the code in several months and the AI tools I used to help write it have all evolved now. So I'll need to find some time to get back in and relearn a few things before I can get them added.

If we get any other requests I can put a wish list together and then tackle them all at once. Looks like we're up to about 70 active weekly users which doesn't sound like a lot but it's pretty good for a small project like this.

One other feature I had thought of that I want to add is the ability to see your most recommended movies to purchase. I already have a dataset with recommendations for similar movies from TBDB for each of your purchases but currently the only way to see them is to click on one of your purchases and it will show you recommendations for that specific movie. But I'd like to have another view that looks at ALL of your recommendations across your whole library and then shows all of the TMDB recommendations and orders them by most recommended. This could give you ideas of what to buy or add to your Kaleidescape wish list.

I keep the plugin on my chrome bar and check it maybe weekly. Really like it as well.
