I don’t think there are many HT devices if any which support direct SFP connections rather than ethernet, at least I’ve not seen any!

I’ve got OM3 fibre cable out to my cinema room and then just have 1Gb media converters either end. I did look for 2.5Gb since my router supports it but 2 years ago when I put it in it wasn’t well supported at all and the step up to 10Gb was and still is huge price wise. Once it gets cheaper I’ll switch everything out to 10Gb and the cable is good for 100Gb but I’d be shocked if that becomes available in the next 20 years.

I agree with you (same router capabilities) but the description was vague indicating that the download time has been reduced to 4 min which led me to believe the port might be a hardware upgrade.

Terra Prime (HDD and SSD) and Compact Terra Prime (HDD and SSD) also have 2.5 Gbps ethernet ports.
None of our servers support a fiber SFP.

Definitely a step in the right direction but still too rich for my blood considering I have had no regrets just using the 1tb in the Strato V. The cost/tb for K storage is still something I cannot justify...especially since I work with PCs and storage all day and know what storage actually costs.

I am right there with you. I’ll stick with rotating my 10-14 movies on my Strato V until (hopefully) the prices comes down a decent amount

But, hmmm, if they keep shrinking stuff and jamming more into these new chassis, does it seem like there might soon be a single mini-chassis Strato E + miniTerraPrime SSD combo device? Kinda like a mini version of the venerable Strato S... the return of the single-box player+server.

not really... the latest players that have limited "standalone" mode are different than the S was. The Strato S, in addition to being a player, was a full-function server too... as in it could be grouped with other servers, it could serve a couple of other zones from its own storage, and had the full interface.
The V (and as far as I know, the E & M) offer a limited standalone mode where they can store some movies, but with a different UI, and lacking the ability to group storage with other servers or serve another player in the home with its content.

These download speeds though blow away our older players/server combos though. Takes me 45 minutes for a 4k movie on my Strato vs 10 on my Terra

Of course they do. So paying huge money for potential download speeds (assuming you have multigig speeds)

I have had a S, and 45 min downloads were less than ideal, but it was all in one and decent storage for less than we are talking about now.

The V I have download speeds are much improved.

But again, 1080 interface, painted steel chassis and 4TB less than 12TB Strato S for $1,000 more on this new combo just isn’t exiting to me.

$1,000 players to go with these servers would be nice..

But if you consider it off the backdrop of the huge price increases across all electronic devices in the last 5 years it’s actually cheaper, just not as cheap as some of us would like!

For me the price of the V, and now the M and E are when the value/$$ became something I could justify... Servers are still a long long way from meeting that criteria.

That's exactly where I am at also. I was willing to pay for a V and an E, but there is a gigantic premium for the hard drives that I am just unwilling to pay.

My max price for the new Mini Terra 8gb would honestly probably be $2500.

Agreed. A a 8db terra less than $3k would definitely peak my interest.

That said, to be honest...the only time I have found myself wishing I had storage was when I was showing demo scripts and could not fit all the movies I wanted scenes from on the internal storage of the V. Other than that...its not even been a thought.....movie night comes, we decide on a movie during dinner...I hit download on app....gtg. Even when we have decided at end of movie we want to watch another...hit download...hit the restroom(which at my age takes longer then movie download time lol), refresh drinks/popcorn...gtg. So in the end more storage is just a really expensive luxury.

And 6 years ago was a millenium ago in terms of price increases on AV products. It was pre-COVID. How the world has changed since then.
Gotta give kudos to KScape for coming out with new products at lower price points (for KScape) to appeal to more consumers!

Exactly. Why pay a crap-ton of money for local storage when I can have unlimited cloud storage for free? I download what I want in the afternoon for the evening onto my Strato E.

Here’s another exercise: Launch the K Store and look at the first page of movies. That’s millions in licensing fees, for that page alone, before you sell a single copy and slowly start earning it back $5 at a time. Running a digital store is so incredibly expensive that tiny companies like Microsoft and Sony have bailed on it. K hardware costs what it needs to for the K ecosystem to exist.

I’ve given up even having the argument each time now because some people just don’t care or agree and only want to look at the monetary comparison. The comparison to consumer drives is off though, they should be comparing to the more expensive enterprise drives to get an accurate hardware cost comparison .

I’m fast approaching 800 movies so I really want that 96TB drive, I think the 72TB is discontinued right? Unfortunately my bank account says no .

Will be interesting to see what happens with the SSD model pricing given the current memory shortage due to A.I data centres.

Correct, the 72TB is discontinued.

Expect an increase for some of the SSD models going forward, for the exact reason you mentioned.
