NEWS: New 246TB SSD Server Announced

I understand that several of these will be showing up in a vault in SILO 18 Friday night when Season 3, Episode 10 airs!

Too bad K can't get Apple TV shows like Silo!
 
Well, I've seen this approach in restaurants before, but this is a first - having "Market Pricing" for electronics!! :p
 
One more tidbit of information. Kaleidescape has confirmed that at present the Compact Terra Prime 246TB will definitely be in the six figure price range. I think Jim’s guesstimate of $200k +/- is probably in the ballpark. We’ll see…
 
Storage isn’t going to get more affordable, that dream died with A.I hoovering it all up just like it did if you want them in your PC or NAS!

Consumer sales are down across the board but profits are booming so best to just buckle in for the ride.

Also if you really need 246Gb you could just get two Terra Prime 120GB HDD’s for about the same as the original $65K 123TB SSD model, the SSD’s have always had a significant price premium made worse by current times.
 
All kidding side, memory is a precious commodity today give the demand from the AI sector. I bought a 28TB drive for work last year, it was $259. The same type of drive in 20TB size today is $1,500. The 28TB is unavailable at any price. Even smaller capacity drives have jumped in cost. I got all our PS5s upgraded with 2TB sticks two years ago, they were $150 each. Same sticks are $500-$600.

Whatever the price of this new server, or any server, people should buy what they can afford as soon as they can. It’s only going to go up.
 
Is this a redesigned server with field replaceable drives?

That would be a great trickle down. I only need a 20TB server (dreaming here!) so getting one of these with a pair of 10 or 12TB drives would be so nice.

True. I do remember when the original Internet bubble burst, one could acquire server class hardware for pennies on the dollar.

Doesn't help with K 'cause I doubt they'd sell refurbished drives.

I don’t know that they’ve directly said so, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is. It uses the newer chassis from the Strato K, which they mentioned was redesigned for easier internal access/repairability, so this is me hoping that means field replaceable drives for the compact units too.

Yeah, its the sad truth....memory/storage prices will only get worse...its never gonna go back to what it used to be. I have pretty much given up on any PC/NAS upgrades...what I have will have to do until it blows up or dies then I will just do without. I am close to retirement age so while the cost of anything that uses memory or storage (which is pretty much everything) will continue to rise my income will not.

This will be using 2x128TiB drives, which yield 122.9TB of usable space. Most advertise that as 256TB, so KS get credit for advertising the (lower) actual space available which is highly unusual!


The advantage of having two drives is (probably/my speculation) that both can contain a mirrored boot partition which stores the 'magic encryption stuff' needed to tie the movie downloads to that particular player.

Having dual drives, means that a failed drive can be field replaced and then rebuild from the working drive. I suspect if the second drive dies before the first is replaced then it would need shipping back to KS to be provisioned as there would be no bootable drive to initialise the new ones.
