Movie Updates

I don’t believe the Parasite Atmos track is available on digital storefronts anywhere. It would be nice to have Transformers and Revenge of the Fallen upated though.

Edit: Heck, I don’t even see Parasite on the store anymore.
Decal Releasing took over digital distribution of a whole bunch of movies on July 1st. K doesn’t have a contract with K, so this title is currently lost to them as well as: I Tonya, Apollo 11, Ingrid Goes West, Wild Rose, Clemency, Gemini, Three Identical Strangers, Border, Colossal, Vox Lux, Ammonite, and many more.

The worst part of Parasite is that the newly distributed version no longer includes the B&W version. When Parasite was available on K, the B&W version was missing and I had always hoped K would add it. They never did, and now the opportunity appears to be gone for good.

Hum?! What happens to this movie, my interest is the Apollo 11 documentary and it's excellent Extras, content going forward? I purchased Apollo 11 as a D2D upgrade to 4k HDR 10 on June 26. If I search the store for the title it doesn't appear but it still appears in my owned list for download. It still appears that I can download it.

Yes, when a movie has to be removed from sale due to a licensing change, you can still download it if you already own it.

I hadn't heard about this particular change. Unfortunate timing for Apollo 11, coming only about a week before the anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing. It's a tradition for me each year to watch The Dish and at least the launch sequence of Apollo 11 on or near the anniversary.

Wow! Lucky for me I got it when I did!
I watched the Apollo 11 landing live as a 7 year old, I didn't realize the significance of the event at the time. My dad worked on the lunar orbiter, Lunar Orbiter - NASA., project that took pictures of the moon in preparation for the landing.

When We Left Earth is a good series on the USA space program. If you can get past the Discovery Channel melodrama the interviews are one of a kind!

This is another one where the new digital offering from Decal is missing the Extras. So, any new purchasers on other digital stores will not have access to the prior extras. It's always a shame when there's a loss like this, which is one of those things that can happen with digital.

And, to be clear to everyone, no individual that bought anything has lost anything. But, any prospective buyers have lost the chance to buy on K, or lost the chance to own the Extras on other digital stores.

There seems to be a contract with Decal but there are only few titles available. DECAL is a joint venture between NEON and Bleecker Street that was formed some year ago.

All 3 seem to have a contract with K but now the movies above are available from NEON so hopefully they will soon be back?

How long does it typically take to get a movie updated for a fix? I purchased Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains The Same on HD. It said there were 4 bonus songs included, but they were missing on both the SD and HD versions, so I opened a case.

Well, that was a month ago, and the HD version was pulled. Support asked that I delete it and try redownloading for some reason, but of course I can’t download the HD version now.

They told me the movie team was working on it with no ETA. Kind of a bummer.

I checked into this one. It seems that fixing this issue with the missing tracks also required the title to go through the update process for Strato V, E, and M, and it seems that it's one of those titles that require some tool updates to be able to be converted. It's in queue, but I'm not sure how much longer it will be.

I'm sorry about the delay.

Thanks for looking and providing details from “behind the scenes”, it’s appreciated. Hopefully, it gets resolved soon - It’s my favorite concert!

It should be back! If not right now now, then in the next day or so.
Update showed up for me today, extras added thanks !

We’re back! Time to get the led out!

I asked this question on an actual post but decided to also ask in this thread… is there any news on Small Soldiers being updated to 4K soon? It’s been available in 4K in other digital stores for months now and it’s also already out on physical media. Would love to see this get updated soon.

As far as I can tell other digital services have the same 4K versions that K has at the moment and not the newer versions.

It's not looking likely at the moment. K has quite a backlog on Paramount 4K Catalog titles, with at least 10 missing so far this year (and 20+ from prior years?). There's always a chance it shows up in the near future, as sometimes 4K Catalog titles hit in a 60-90 day window, but after that it's in the backlog and we just have to submit requests and hope.

If you haven't submitted a request, I recommend doing so to: movies@kaleidescape.com

The backlog of 4K titles from Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate, Warner and more is almost getting deafening at this point. I have absolutely no clue how titles are "prioritized" at K but when I look at what does come out compared to what doesn't it can be absolutely baffling. If I sort movies by popularity in K's app there are titles near the top that are widely available in 4K on other services that are not on K. I see direct to video trash coming out week after week while high profile titles available in 4K are passed over again and again and again. At the end of the day Kscape is a movie service, the rest is just means to that end (players, servers, etc). Priority one day in and day out is the be the best MOVIE service possible. I give K a solid B to B- in that regard, and mainly because of their handling of catalog titles.

I have been tracking high-profile 4K upgrades on K across studios for the last couple of years and had a total of about 75 titles. I knew I was missing digital-only upgrades which are hard to track, so I actually sat down to do a comparison on Blu-ray.com. A couple of simple searches showed that the actual number is in the hundreds. It was enough of a difference that I basically stopped monitoring things and only track titles I really want personally.

Some examples of 4K title counts*
Paramount on iTunes: 462
Paramount on K: 154
Sony on iTunes: 488
Sony on K: 208
Universal on iTunes: 409
Universal on K: 198

*Minor caveat that Blu-ray.com tracks ever single listing meaning that updated versions may be split, bundles are present, etc. However, this would at best account for 5-10% impact.

It seems like week to week we get a question about whether "x" back catalog movie will show up on K in 4k. And the answer is always "we'll have to wait and see". Most of us here don't have any insight into K's movie selection process bc K doesn't tell us how they go about determining which titles to add to the movie store. Just my opinion, but I think that some of the movie selection process takes into account how much money does K have to spend to license the movie.

The determination of which back catalog movies K chooses to add to the movie store seems to confound some current and potential future K customers. My movie watching experience revolves around newer/newish movie releases bc I rarely go back and watch older movies after I've watched them. K gets a A++ from me bc they get the majority of newer 4k movies from the major studios. If I cared about back catalog titles, K would get a B or B- from me.

What's strange to me is that K has recently added back catalog movies from Shout Factory, specifically, the John Woo films. I would suspect that amongst the movie watching population, those aren't the most popular back catalog movies when you compare them to some back catalog movies from a major studio like Paramount. That confuses me bc if popularity isn't a factor in adding back catalog titles to the K movie store, there has to be other factors as well. Not knowing what the factors are make it hard to predict what K will or will not add in terms of those back catalog titles.

Do I expect K to add every single movie that Apple or Fandango has? No, but it would be nice. K doesn't have Apple or Fandango money for licensing. But I would expect K to continue to make progress in adding more back catalog titles. K is a movie service, and they should strive for being the best movie service.

Their log line is "The Ultimate MOVIE platform". Not ultimate hardware platform, ultimate movie quality platform or any other shuffle. It is MOVIE platform. I agree they handle new titles with aplomb, but I would imagine many people here are movie lovers/collectors that find catalog as important if not more so. I would venture that my buy rate of titles is MUCH higher for catalog than it is for new releases, especially with titles nowadays where I feel like there are only maybe 10-15 titles that come out each year worth buying. My buying list would probably show way more catalog titles and/or update purchases to movies that finally get updated to 4K.

For movie selection and 4K catalog updates, I still say this: "If it gets a disc, it goes on K."

Physical media is shrinking, if a studio decides to produce a disc they think it has sales potential. The studio already did all of the work. K doesn't have to think. It goes on K. Period. This is only ~20% of 4K catalog updates, so it's not a huge ask in my mind.

Heavy Metal, High Noon, Sweeney Todd, The Wicker Man, Rosemary's Baby, Drive, The Dead Zone, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Starman, Tootsie, Stir of Echoes, Top Secret, Punch Drunk Love, Drive, and on and on and on. And don't make me mention ST: TMP: DC. :)
