Higher Bitrates for standard 4K titles

This seems like a pretty big deal. I hadn't seen this anywhere else or am I missing something? Regular 4K titles will now have a higher bitrate than normal, higher than 4K discs.

I saw that in the newsletter and I'm really looking forward to seeing it on my Strato S.

Tayloe had mentioned it about a month ago in one of the other threads but this is the official announcement. The other part is 4kc going from 110 to 120 which I don’t think had been mentioned.

If the Luma 4KC fix requires even bigger file sizes, I would think K would be all about this as they can sell more storage space.

Anything that improves the image is great!
Yes I have to delete movies more often from my server, but if I can get a better overall viewing experience, than for me it’s worth it.
I don’t think it is an evil plot to get us to buy more servers. I think they are trying to offer the best quality out there, which I applaud. I am always striving to do the same.
I starting saving for a new server, although at these prices it may take awhile.

I thought a lot of UHD discs are actually higher bit rate than 60. If true that makes these graphs quite an exaggeration.

iirc, I ripped Atomic Blonde and when I played the rip back over the network to the OPPO I had at the time, it was doing around 100Mb/s.

I have almost 1800 4K discs catalogued on a monster spreadsheet. Average video bitrate (including DV layers when present) is 66.2 Mbps. K Marketing isn't far off. Extreme cases for discs are Trolls at 30 and Misery at 100.

The higher bitrates certainly won't hurt but prior compares between disc and k-scape have shown that the encoding parameters are more important than absolute bitrate, as long as there is enough bitrate to begin with. With 4KC having softer luma one theory is that the higher chroma resolution was eating up too much bitrate so in that case perhaps the higher bitrate will help with that issue.

Is there a way to verify bit rate while watching content? I think I saw something from one of the vendors that showed bit rate on a little LCD display. My Sony BD player shows bit rate for video and audio.

One user here on the forum looked it up in his network switch. I think that´s a pretty good approach to get player independant bitrate information.

Bit rates are similar as I posted before. Cinematic ranges from 100-175. Mostly staying around 125. Occasionally dipping below 100 during credits. I can share some results later.
