Disney Fires Entire Home Media Team

Disney has eliminated their physical home video team. Does this signal a potential shift/openness to licensing? An abandonment of the physical media market? Or, were these largely redundant positions due to outsourcing production/distribution?

Per the latest figures for 2025, physical media now makes up 1.4% of home video revenue and Top 10 best selling discs don't crack $10M. Disney has the first month of Zootopia 2's actual sales figures ($1.8B Box Office), one week of Avatar: Fire & Ash's pre-order sales figures ($1.5B Box Office), and has now taken this action.

These are interesting days that we're living in.

Didn’t they already sign a contract with Sony last year to handle all their physical media releases moving forward? I wonder how much this team was even involved in that process much anymore anyways.

Yes, Disney has a distribution deal with Sony in the US (and other companies in each region). Disney controls all content, determines what titles will be released and when, produces the content (including remasters), etc. The digital products are then provided to Sony for printing, shipping, etc. These deals have been in place for over two years, so while I'm sure there was some redundancy I can't imagine there was a team twiddling their thumbs this whole time. Disney also cut much of their marketing staff, including the digital marketing team, so I guess we're really in wait-and-see mode for what kind of impacts could occur.

I'd like to think that as the market shrinks Disney will open itself to licensing deals. However, given that isn't regular business for them, I'm not sure if their current distribution deals facilitate it. Regardless, one more step towards services like K becoming more important to consumers.

I really wish we could buy the Disney Star Wars series in the K store... maybe this will change things.

Are you referring to the Disney+ shows? I doubt they’ll ever be made available through EST, since that would undermine the subscription’s value proposition.

Well, Bill Hunt over at TheDigitalBits has uploaded his reaction. Not good, it seems these layoffs may matter.
Of particular interest to K owners is this part:
By the way—even as I say this, Disney’s archive restoration team is still going gangbusters remastering lots of these films in 4K... Many of these remasters aren’t even available in 4K Digital...

Yes- but the subscription charge allows you to view shows as soon as they are released. I would keep that now. I just want to more easily watch the shows in better quality on my K.
