3TB Drives are Here

"The company also announced it has made significant additional progress to restore its manufacturing capacity following the recent flooding in Thailand. It has continued to ramp HDD production in Thailand and yesterday resumed slider production which had been suspended since October 10. The company now believes its manufacturing capacity will be back to pre-flood capabilities in the quarter ending September 2012. "

Posting on this subject again because of the number of emails/PM's I've been receiving asking for my opinion about when the surcharges might end.

I'll be as clear as possible: I HAVE NO IDEA.

I do not think anyone knows for sure (except perhaps the disk manufacturers). The folks I've spoken with at K will not even speculate about an end date. If/when they do end, it will be without notice I'm sure. So for now we're stuck with it.:(

So Jim, tell me again, when will they make more of these things? And what about the rumored 5TB "golden lotus" drives? ;)

I'm waiting for the 4 petabyte drives, or maybe the exabyte ones. No the zettabyte should be enough. ;)

Ha!:)

In a year it will not matter. They are working on special Servers that have infinite storage capabilities (they work in the cloud), never breakdown, even easier to use than current Servers, actually do all the HD codec decoding BEFORE it even reaches the Players (which are all a new wireless technology that's 100 times faster than current wireless). Most commands are also voice activated if one choses that option in the web utility. Every movie ever made will be available in both 4K and 2K 1080p BR, all online, downloadable in less than 30 seconds. I also have it on good authority that most of the studios are willing to allow K owner's to purchase at $2.00 per movie, with Universal being the only holdout at $3.00.

Given all that, I decided to wait until next January before buying anymore disks. The surcharge will hopefully be gone, and the technology mentioned above will be displayed at CES. See you all there!:)

I have that topped. I am going to Recall and having the memories of actually living my favorite movies implanted in my mind.

I have always wanted to go to Mars and share a bed with that woman from Basic Instinct...

That's all great, but useless to me unless they can also get my ISP to up the speed of my ADSL to something considerably faster that 1Mbps, increase my monthly data limit to 120TB instead of 120Gb, and decrease my ISP charges from $80/month to $8/month
