NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

OUch...I probably should take back what I said about storage from K being unacceptable.....I got notice from my NAS that one of the raid drives has failed..........went to Amazon to find replacement.........holy crap!... These prices for storage are stupid...no thanks. AI needs to die a horrible death.
It has gotten crazy with storage and chip prices. AI data centers are to blame for that, I think. I maxed out both of my NAS when I first got them (320tb total), so I’m good on that front unless I get failures.

Now we just need Strato C² Kaleidescape. I see this as the Strato K without an internal hard drive for those of us using Terra servers. That way we aren’t paying extra for a hard drive we cannot use.

@MikeKobb

Sorry, don't expect one anytime soon.....:(

Jim

I have a previous gen Compact Terra Prime 8TB HDD w/2.5Gbps and I upgraded to 5Gbps fiber when Cinematic was released. I was hoping that I would see a notable speed improvement (even with the HDD unit) but downloads peg out around 1150 Mbps. A bit better but not much of a gain over my previous 1GBps fiber service which got me upwards of ~900 Mbps.

Good news is AT&T pretty much halved the cost of 5Gbps in the DFW area at $125/mo now. At least my network no longer slows to a crawl while downloading a movie. No more "DAD! SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE INTERNET" yelling from across the house.
Funny, there really is a significant speed difference in the SSD model and HDD model. I was curious. I usually get 2000+ Mbps on the same fiber as you. Hard to believe the difference in drive is really that appreciable, but I guess so.

It is the data centers. I was given an opportunity to invest in one recently, and the pitch deck estimated the storage requirements and costs. They made it a point to say "estimated" because costs are rising rapidly. This data center planned for an initial purchase of 1.8 MILLION drives, (YES, MILLION!) a mix of SSD and HDD. As it turns out, that crazy number appears to be just barely above the average for these centers, some centers are larger, some much larger. One of the major variables in the deck was the unknown annual increases in replacement drive costs.

Edited to add that CHIPS were also a MAJOR cost, and again, they plan for significant increases in the future.

Given that, it should be no wonder as to why storage costs are increasing. After I heard the "pitch" I went directly to my K account and ordered a 120TB Terra!😂

Jim

The HDD Terra servers are limited to 1Gb downloads, while the SDD drive can download at 2.5Gb max. I have 2Gb Internet speeds, the highest download speed so far on HDD Terra servers was 1200Mb but 1100 is not uncommon. Still waiting for my Strato K.

I have an HDD Terra but not really concerned with speeds since my ISP tops out at 1Gb. They just recently buried fiber in my area, but not sure when the service will begin.

Sadly there is no end in sight. Things will just get worse and worse....for some reason this damn AI bubble has not burst like I had hoped...doubt it ever will. Terrifying when think how much everyone relies on devices that need storage and memory. No I am not talking about luxury things like Kaleidescape. I am referring to things like my Insulin Pump which has memory and some storage required to do its job. If Roku of all things had to increase price of streamers due to this....just about any modern device will be effected.

tldr: time to go watch Terminator 1 and 2.

There will be no end to it unless humanity suddenly stops or figures out a way to dramatically increase production and capacity. Every single aspect of our lives involves computing and it will only get more and more complex.

That said, I really DO want a 120TB Terra, but the idea of spinning disks isn't sitting well with me and the SSD version's price is even worse. lol

I feel like we living through a huge technological leap that will change our society. It’s like the dawn of the internet all over again. No idea where it’s all going.

No 120tb Terra for me right now either. “First-world problems” as they say. “I felt sorry for myself because I had no shoes - until I met a man who had no feet.”

At least you can change a failed drive in a full sized Terra.....even if it does cost $10,000 by the time you need one....:giggle:

I think it was Western Digital that, back in Feb or so, said all the drives they were going to make for the next 18 months were already purchased.

I can certainly believe that, they were one of the manufacturer's listed (there were others), and this is only one center, and hasn't even broken ground yet.

Jim

I understand what this sounds like coming from a dealer, but if you are thinking about getting more storage, consider a purchase sooner rather than later, or just accept the higher prices that are likely if/when you do purchase. I might have to start offering a payment plan! 😂

Now back to the topic of this thread!

I hear you and can’t say I disagree that it would make a ton of sense to release a different product line if costs would escalate. But the reality of the matter is the HDD space is expensive. And if you utilize Terra servers, you cannot even utilize the on board storage. I have no real use case where I would take the unit on vacation which I’ve heard people mention for why you may want storage on played. I do agree on board storage helps with resale and is a great starting point for introducing new users to Kaleidescape. But once you get the customers in, don’t take away their storage because they bought more. That doesn’t appear to make a ton of sense to me even if the amount could be insignificant.

To be clear, this isn't some strategic/marketing decision that K made. When a Terra is present storage is combined and available to all players based on capability. In that situation, the Strato K/V/E/M needs to be able to function as a server for other players potentially while also being used by the player itself. The legacy Strato S was capable of this. The chipsets on the new players do not support acting as a server, let alone simultaneously while playing (multiple streams).

I think K could develop functionality that would allow a player with storage to join a server environment without actually making its content available to other players. But, it's easy to think of challenges that would have to be worked through (same content on internal storage and server) and I'm sure that only becomes more complicated as the ball of twine is unraveled. I'd imagine K has already evaluated this for cost/benefit and it sits somewhere on their roadmap.

Personally, I wouldn't hold my breath. But, the issue here is chipsets and architecture not marketing or sales.

Same here. I was able to hit ~1400 for few downloads at 2gig connection but that seems to be the max. It depends on what sector of hdd is movie being downloaded. Apparently outer sectors are faster and can reach above speeds, while inner sectors are around 800-1000.

Check back in a 100 years......

Jim
The sad part is ..at my age and health...one reason I take a humorous approach to all this is that by the time the real effects of what might be happening now actually impact important non luxury life...i will be long gone...so I dont really care ! Kinda feel the same way about politics! :)
