Well after lasts's nite's cherry popping 4k Cinematic feast on the videowall, I will never be watching (the dvd looking by comparison) UHD ever again, I want more!!!

That totally makes sense. In my case, I'm not buying Criterion's Silence of the Lambs or their Kubrick box. In my opinion, Criterion has gone from first to worst with their quality. Anytime another 4K version has appeared, that version has been better than Criterion's in my opinion. Every single Kurosawa film from BFI. Time Bandits from Arrow. So I have no faith that their Silence of the Lambs will exceed the current Arrow version. Plus they sit on their licenses. They've had The Right Stuff for 3 years, and instead have been pumping out mostly prestige filler.Barnes and Nobles sale sometimes goes live, last week of October. It could probably even start before this release goes live. I have a B&N store literally 5 mins from where I live. For me I intend to pick up Frankenstein, Silence of the lambs and the awesome Stanley Kubrick complete 4k set (30 disc set). That’s a saving of $350…if I wait. Lol.
I do order a lot from orbit. I don’t mind paying extra for steelbooks and other collectible editions. Criterion usually are standalone cases or sometimes digipacks. Quite sturdy.

On the Kubrick box, I have every single SK film in 4K already except Lolita. I also prefer to list all films in my media wall in alphabetical order, I don't want a box that groups them, adds a bunch of cardboard filler, and makes me spend hundreds more for things I already have, that I suspect are lesser quality anyway.
To clarify, this is not meant as a critique of the customer who wants the box, I totally get it. I'm in theory an ideal customer for such a treasure box that celebrates a favorite storyteller. I'm largely speaking from my own OCD and cultivated dislike and distrust of Criterion themselves. I'm actually boycotting them, and will be buying Frankenstein only as a forced exception. Because I also have big feelings about Netflix as well.
Thankfully Atomic did post their listing for it, at $36.99, which I preordered, cheaper than Orbit's $39.99, and Criterion's own $47.96.
I hear you. Maybe I can live vicariously through you with that box set!I have the silence of the lambs Arrow set and a German release as well. I want to round up with the criterion version 4k, since I have their Blu-ray as well. Like you I have every single title of SK. I intend to sell those once I get everything consolidated in one place with the criterion set.
Yeah I agree, I’m not so gung-ho about their quality either, especially in recent times. That’s why I wait for the 50% sales, as I feel (imho) everything is worth it at that price point. Lol.
Right on. That's the clincher I forgot to mention – where there's a 4K HDR version on K, that's my actual watching version. So I have no use for reissues of the same film on disc, without a dramatic improvement in quality, which is the last thing I expect from Criterion.Silence of the Lambs is already in 4K on K. I'm sure you guys already know that, but just in case.
If you don't mind I will answer in somewhat different way. I have no time or inclination to buy and check each title I am interested in. So I tested few titles across the board when I first came to Kaleidescape. I wanted to find a general policy that would serve me well, even if on occasion I might buy a second best options.I have wanted to ask this question for those of you who are deep down the physical media rabbit hole (I have just gone down it myself - wow are things different then when I got out 8 years ago). If K has a movie in 4K (pre-cinematic format). Is the quality of the image/transfer/encoding the reason for why you are opting for the disc? I know some of you still buy new discs as part of your collecting process along with K version and maybe even on Apple TV as well.
If that is the case what are a few of your favorites that are available in 4K on the K store but you think the 4K Disc is far better (maybe because of newer transfer or rights issue etc.)?
Don't want to hijack this thread and turn it into Criterion bashing, but I am happy I got Seventh Seal in HDR from BFI over Criterion's SDR. Also, I just watched Criterion's new 4k blu-ray of Charade, a big favorite of mine. I don't know.... maybe I was expecting too much, but I thought there would be more of an improvement over their previous blu-ray.That totally makes sense. I invariably prioritize audio. That’s most important for my particular use case. So if an equivalent 4k physical release supports an immersive mix (atmos) then that would be my go-to. Now with Cinematic formats available on k, it makes the task harder.I have wanted to ask this question for those of you who are deep down the physical media rabbit hole (I have just gone down it myself - wow are things different then when I got out 8 years ago). And to get back on topic, is there any chance that Charade (1963) will be updated to 4k on Kaleidescape?
I just got back into discs again and thought the common wisdom was Criterion used to pay less attention to video presentation but had in the last 3 years upped their technical game in most cases. Sounds like you think it's the opposite - good to know.
I did just pick up Thief from Arrow and Carnal Knowledge from Indicator based on what the internet told me
Also big fan of Orbit and Atomic - luckily up here in Maine we still have some retail left (Bull Moose) and it's been fun to go flip through some discs occasionally.
I have never seen it but will search it out - solid cast on that one. I am likely going to blind buy that Arrow 4K of Connery in "Outland" during B&N 50% - looks interestingA big favorite of mine is going to be released in 4k Blu-Ray in UK: The Name Of The Rose (1986). I doubt we will see it on Kaleidescape, but I would love to be proven wrong. I will probably order from Orbit or Atomic.
It's more likely than not, but as I mentioned, there are some titles where the updated 4K versions are still in review so they're not posted yet. So, I can't make a blanket statement, but it's likely.Would it be reasonable to assume that any movie with 4K Cinematic now has a standard 4K encode using your newer transcoding methods? Either because it’s a newer movie or it was updated when 4KC was added.
And Scary Movie and maybe Madagascar 2 4K (might take a week or two to appear, but the first got 4KC update recently). The only one listed that I don’t expect is Sinbad. There could also be some more late announcements (Reacher Season 3 just dropped on other stores).I think we’re getting The Mandalorian tomorrow, but will we also get Disclosure Day and He-Man?![]()
