NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

Projector NZ8
Screen Stewart Filmscreen Studiotek 130 G4 120” 2.40
Panamorph DCR lens
Lumagen Radiance Pro
I own a CR-250-RH Spectro that I use to calibrate and a profiled C6-HDR5000 I use for 3D LUTS
Nice setup, let us know what you think of the Strato K when you get it installed in your system 👍

And still no 3D support [announced yet] outside of random anaglyph editions. Surely Apple wouldn't mind sublicensing their AVP conversions to hedge on the general retail market.
Add me to those who’d kill for 3D support.
No one is "adding" 3D support at this point. The Avatar: Fire & Ash 3D Blu-ray just flopped in the market.

Also, Apple is no factor in anyone's 3D except Apple's. They license 3D movies for their store just like every other 2D movie; nothing special happening here. Apple can no more sublicense a 3D movie than they can sublicense Top Gun: Maverick. K is perfectly welcome to license 3D movies from any studio they're contracted with; the product is literally sitting there for anybody that wants it. The problem is no one does. :(

Problem is none of the modern chipsets support 3D anymore. It´s not a content issue.

Disagree.

Lots want 3D with their projector. But kaleidescape, and now zidoo, not supporting it is killing the format even further.

Thankfully new projectors like the xgimi titan noir max still support it, and are high enough lumens to support 3D. Glad I kept my older zidoo player to play 3D remuxes from.

I got a complete 'Chroma' lesson from this K release.
Owner of a K system since the very early days probably around 2006 or something - my use of K has been declining and confined to rewatch movies (I still have over 2500 K movies in my library) or immediate download purchases. With the Terra SSD and the V no need to rat pack movies just buy them when you need. And as you know, they dont make good movies these days and there is so much content available between streaming and other Disc media which I buy constantly.
My go to player had become the Uoogos AMB 6 Plus with Corelec for quality and playing DV FEL (although I found out that my Chroma settings were incorrect in this player - learning from the new K Player what Chroma is although Jim Peterson at Lumagen talks about it all the time).
But with the K, Kaelidescape has 'hit the ball out of the park' - I ordered my K and although download times have gone up from 3 to 4 minutes to 6 to 8 minutes - K is now top tier and Blu Rays will never be able to compete with it for size of the files.
I still have to watch a movie on the K and compare it to the Uoogos but will soon around 10th of July or so.

Actually since the power brick thing was nagging at me, I went back and replaced that, and got this (unedited) pic from my phone. I know you specifically asked me not to do this. I think that is in fact exactly the way to get me to do something. Very sorry!

Unfortunately, it's an audience issue.

The lack of a paying audience is killing the format. 3D is not a significant driver for video players or projectors, and projectors not only haven't driven an increase in 3D but haven't noticeably slowed its decline. I can get into all the details if desired, but the 3D home video market was slowing dying for years before it accelerated in the last 18 months. At this point even a major title like Avatar can't justify 3D Blu-ray production.

I'm on record saying if K ever did support 3D not only would I support it but I would immediately throw five figures at them. I would buy every title, like I have for 3D Blu-ray, Vudu 3D, and Digital 3D on Apple Vision Pro. However, 3D consumers like me can likely be counted on one hand and those that would buy a K-level device for 3D are likely counted in the tens and not hundreds.

@Edgar You need one of these for your rack:

Don't tempt me!
I need to do some reorganizing in my rack and after this pic I'll probably push the K devices further back in the mounts so that the screws won't show should I go the Strato K route.
The screws and lights themselves don't bother me in and of themselves, but I will admit that the sudden loss of symmetry between my Compact Terra and the Strato player next to it is triggering something. Here's what the Push-Back orientation looks like for me (below).

Good to know you can push those things further into the rack. I hadn’t thought about that.
You'll still have to turn the display off altogether to avoid Discogate.

Yep!

------------------

In new news, I replaced all the rest of my movies with 4K Cinematic where available. Setting that initial set of 11 aside, that was 31 movies. As it started, I got a popup saying I didn't have the space to download all of them, so I went back and deleted all the 4K HDR10 versions of all of those 42 movies. Then I got a popup that my download speed was throttled down to 375Mbps or something like that, while the player had some operations going. Those operations stopped sometime later and my download speed returned to my usual roughly 830Mbps. All of this was running most of day for these 31 movies, from 11:05am to 9:46pm.

I noticed all the Star Wars movies have been updated to 4K Cinematic except Solo. Kaleidescape friends, could we get that too? Feel free to delete the sequel trilogy entirely if that will help.

Also Blade Runner, Alien, and 2001. Kthxbye!

I'm realizing the deletion of the 4K HDR10 files throws a bit of a monkey-wrench into my plan to repurpose the Strato C in the living room, and run off the same server. More of that subtle pull to buy more server space. Or perhaps a new version of the OS might present a way to "virtualize" playback of 4K Cinematic files across older players. But I suppose there isn't as much product eng time that it makes sense to put toward getting older players to be fully backward compatible with new formats. I would be happy to see it though!

I also noticed that the cover art for the 4K Cinematic files is the standard current marketing art again, and not my art that I had replaced for the 4K HDR files. That seems fair I suppose. Luckily, I had stored all my original 1-sheet derived art that I had mostly downloaded from tmdb.org, and spent about 5 minutes replacing the art. Also I re-edited some titles to make them sort correctly for me, such as adding the prefix RAI to the Raiders movies. Also, had to restore the title of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Still have to go back and do that for the MCU movies, forgot about those. Somehow.

Does anyone have a sense of the increased bitrate on 4K Cinematic, how much of that is going just to the higher chroma resolution vs just a higher bitrate overall for the rest of the video?

I realize you're asking about the breakdown, but I've always wondered how to see bitrate while playing. Is that in the Kaleidescape UI? Can I find that in my Lumagen? Would one need a dedicated piece of equipment?

The materials say that they're on average 110 Mbps.

Everyone buying a K and downloading the new file format is going to need a much larger terra server. WOW... I've downloaded 10 on my 48TB so far. Looks like the 120TB is in my future.

Only K-scape would know. We wouldn't be able to tell. I'm asking if the extra bitrate (over standard 4K) is all going to the chroma resolution or only some of it and if just some of it how much relatively?

Yep, I edited my post to clarify I had jumped to another question, without leaving a trail.

I am yet to receive my K Player but I like the Idea of the new K Player having different lighting than my Compact Terra SSD.
I my Rack both the Terra and the V were black and flush mounted - you could not tell which one was which. The Terra always stayed on and the V light would turn off when idle. But when the V was playing both were lit off exactly the same.
Now functionally, it does not matter which is which ... as these very cool devices just sit there in the rack and are controlled through control system and/ or web interface.
Now with the new lighting on the K I will be able to tell instantly which one is which.

My experience with the K player:

At first viewing, the difference between the E and the K was subtle. Natural subjects, like skies of clouds or mild sunsets were smoother and more beautiful. The next thing I noticed was that every time a movie was paused, the image looked like a gorgeous high-definition photograph. Then I noticed more details in the rooms people were in, and then I noticed that I could comprehend action scenes more easily. But the big shift was when I realized that everything was more grounded and that I was much more peaceful and able to enjoy watching movies without getting fatigued -- a quiet seismic shift as the part of my brain that has always been filling in the gaps in motion and reconciling the false colors could finally relax and just enjoy the beauty and story of the movie.

Fascinating description! Thank you!

Thanks for your input! Could you share what display/avr equipment you are using?
Thanks!
