Last movie watched

The Ugly Stepsister. It was a blind buy on the Kscape store.

Man, I was pleasantly surprised at this film! I enjoyed the dark and sinister retelling of Cinderella while somewhat making you empathize with the stepsister.

I took my kids (young boys) to see Masters of the Universe (in 4DX no less) and we all had a blast. I really like Travis Knight as a director/artist and he did a great job on this movie. Although by no means a perfect film, it's incredibly fun and nearly exactly what you'd want from a "toy" movie. It very much invokes the irreverent over-the-top silly fun you'd have as a kid playing with your action figures.

I see it's struggling at the box office and I can understand that. Somehow this movie is perfectly targeted at 10-year-olds and 50-year-olds, except the 10-year-olds don't know who He-Man is. I actually had to talk my kids into seeing it, and they loved it. That's a rough marketing proposition.

Anyway, funny, flashy, and sure to be played on repeat by my boys when it hits home video. Hopefully this movie finds its audience and doesn't go down as a warning sign to avoid similar efforts. We need more movies like this, not less.*

*Although I will take "less" on an individual basis. WHY does every modern movie need to clock in at over 2 hours???

Last night we watched Love & Mercy. I'm surprised I had never heard of this before, but found it on a current sale (it's $5 right now so go grab it).

A really well-crafted biopic about Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys, starring both Paul Dano and John Cusack as Brian Wilson from different eras.

Highly recommended.

Unfortunately the 50+ folk are complaining more than the kids, if you notice some of the online feedback/comments. Lol. As someone who grew up with (and loved) the He-man animated series, I will accept anything centered around He-Man as Manna raining down from the Heavens.

I can never understand this notion of comparing contemporary projects/reboots with something which was done 5 decades ago. Take it for what it is in its current iteration. We need to encourage and not deter such endeavors for the resurrection our lost, beloved heroes.

Being a Statham fan, had fun watching this. I feel this is sort of a bounce back effort from Statham after a string of subpar performances in recent times.

Sounded good, although the PQ was a tad too muted (even if that was the creative intent) for my liking. Would definitely recommend a watch.

Finally finished all the Star Wars films with the family with Rogue One being the last one we watched. I really like Rogue One. Of course, we watched it the day before realizing there was a quality improvement update to download. Oops... We also finished up the original three Karate Kid films. Lots of heart in those movies, IMO.

Now that our Star Wars movie journey is closed (still working on some D+ shows), I'm looking forward to branching out again with my kids to more older classics and catching up on newer releases. I hope I enjoy MOTU, Mando & Grogu, and more. Can't wait for these 2026 movies to start hitting home release on K. I hope the windows are short.

I have a different take on this movie. First of all, it doesn't belong on your list of music concerts because there is very little music and not presented in a concert mode with full songs.

Second, it is essentially a look at criminal psychiatric malpractice used to manipulate a wealthy individual. What was done to Brian Wilson was inexcusable and resulted in permanent damage. The diagnosis was never accurate yet the film portrays BW as if he actually was a schizophrenic. Since this diagnosis was overturned by the experts at UCLA, why does the movie give his character symptoms that are unique to patients with schizophrenia if they (movie producers) knew the diagnosis was wrong? When I first saw this movie, I thought I was the one with schizophrenia and I was hearing voices telling me the movie was a fraud which it is IMO.

I would not recommend this movie to people who don't understand the real story or how false this story is before they watch it.

Well, it's not on my list of concerts, so that's a non-issue.

It's interesting, because as two people who have never been huge Beach Boys fans, I had a basic knowledge of what was done to Brian, my partner didn't really know much about it at all, we basically came out of the movie with a better understanding that Wilson had mental health issues which were misrepresented, exaggerated, and weaponized against him to keep him numb while they manipulated and robbed him.

So maybe it's not as far off base as you think, just not as in-depth and detailed as you would've liked?

Is more about a lack of accuracy than a lack of depth.

Hearing voices (auditory hallucinations) is a key element affecting the majority of people with schizophrenia. The movie focuses on this symptom repeatedly showing scenes where he talks about it implying over and over again that BW was a schizophrenic.

Yet the UCLA psych department dismissed schizophrenia as his diagnosis. If this is true, then why did the movie make such a big deal of the auditory hallucinations? It's as if the film is labeling him as a schizophrenic even though that was not his diagnosis. It's analogous to a film showing him as an HIV patient even though he was not. I don't know the actual time lines but I got the impression they made the movie before they knew what UCLA Psych had to say but it was too late so they went with it even though the portrayal was not accurate and, in fact, disingenuous.

Those scenes were painful as was most of the movie. I remember when this was going on and how awful he and the others had been manipulated by this quack (Landy). As an aside, I thought Cusak was unconvincing as the older Brian Wilson but maybe that's because by then I knew the story was as dishonest as Landy.

One more point - It's inconceivable that Landy gave LSD to a patient with mental illness. Who knows what the real underlying disease was?

The Goodbye Girl. I thought it was Richard Drefuss's best role (yes - better than Jaws for me, American Graffiti was excellent also).

Mortal Kombat II. Looked and sounded great. Pretty stupid, as expected, but I’m a long time gamer so I had to… it was fine.

One of my favorite movies from last year. One can make a case that the titles refers to Cinderella. There are definitely better ways to get skinny!

Best haunted hotel move since The Shining and favorite move of the year so far! Great soundtrack that proves you don’t need to be beaten over the head by bass to be effective.

If there is ever a Bioshock movie Damian McCarthy should direct!

Just watched Ad Astra. My vote for boring movie of the year

I had recently watched interstellar and loved it. Though Ad Astra would be more of the same.....nope!
