Movie Updates

Not sure if I'm missing a trick here, and apologies if this is something blindingly obvious, but I'm wondering why it is when a title such as Casino Royale is updated from 4K SDR to 4K DV and HDR10, it is not automatically downloaded to my system and deleting the SDR version.

Is this really something I need to manage manually? Nothing is showing in my Movie Updates tab in the app.

I don’t believe HDR or DV are considered “updates” from a K perspective. These are all 4K offerings, and a user may have reasons for downloading a specific version. I certainly wouldn’t want my updates tab to be filled with every HDR version that I had downloaded the SDR version for.

BTW, Casino Royale has been in HDR since it was on the K Store. Dolby Vision is new. I don’t own a V, but perhaps DV versions show up as updates on Strato V/M/E?

Appreciate the prompt reply. Thank you.

Maybe I'm looking at this wrong? Would HDR and/or DV not be considered to be an improvement on the SDR version? I appreciate that there are instances where content might be dropped, so people would want to stay on the earlier release for that reason, but remain a bit flummoxed as to why Kaleidescape wouldn't alert me in any way whatsoever to the fact that an improved version of the film is now available for me to download. This thread after all is filled with reports of updates where it is explicitly stated they deliver improved video and/or audio.

Casino Royale is a rather odd scenario because I own a V, and for some reason I have the SDR version downloaded. No idea how that could have happened if it's always been available in HDR.

Not for everyone. As @LoveCinema has alluded to there are any number of reasons why someone might want to retain SDR versions and I agree that I wouldn't want my updates list filled with every version change. Of course that's very much a personal viewpoint.

I acknowledged that and accept that a fully automated update may not be what everyone wants - in which case, don't make it fully automatic - but again, pretty much every instance of an update being mentioned in this thread talks of video and/or audio improvements.

It seems extremely odd for Kaleidescape to go to all that work to release improved content on their store, yet not actually provide any way for their customers to find out about it, other than to go through every title manually and check every now and again.

As it is, at least we have this thread, so I'll just have to go back through it from the day I purchased my system and see what's been updated :) A one off chore, and then I can just monitor the thread for updates in the future.

/Edit
Just to repeat for clarity - nothing at all is showing in my updates list. It states "There are no movies with updates available." This is clearly not the case.

I assume you're on a new player (V/M/E)? Yeah, I would think that if you are, and you've downloaded a 4K title that has since received a Dolby Vision update, that there should be some notification of that given that the driver for those devices is DV.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that if I have paid for the 4k/SDR version of a given movie, and later a 4k/HDR version becomes available, I would have to pay for the upgrade, as it is considered a different version. It is not a free update which does show up for audio track changes, etc. I'm not saying I like this, and I I hope I'm wrong, but I think I was told here that this is how it works.

They automatically notify you of the free updates, but not the paid upgrades - and I agree it would be a worthwhile thing for them to do that as well.

Only paid upgrades are HD to 4K. Once at 4K it’s just different flavors of color grading and there’s no difference in cost. Every DV update, with the new encode efforts and all, are being delivered free to prior 4K owners.

Well, I'm very glad to be wrong here!! :)

Just to follow up a little with what others have said -- one of the big reasons we offer SDR versions even when we have HDR or Dolby Vision versions available is that those SDR versions often look better on front projection systems, many of which don't have enough light output to really render an HDR presentation, and therefore require tone mapping to adapt an HDR version to the capabilities of the projector.

To explain a bit more about updates, for purposes of our movie store an "Update" is defined as a new copy of the same version (including resolution and dynamic range) of a movie that you currently have downloaded to your system. So, if you have the 4K HDR version of a movie on your system, and we produce a new 4K HDR version, you'd be notified of an update. If we add a 4K Dolby Vision version, that does not meet the definition of an update, and you won't be notified.

It seems extremely odd for Kaleidescape to go to all that work to release improved content on their store, yet not actually provide any way for their customers to find out about it, other than to go through every title manually and check every now and again.

For what it's worth, we agree. This is something that's on our list of desired improvements. We'd like to be able to let you know when there's a new 4K "flavor" that might interest you.

Thanks Mike - really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

This however is going to open up a whole other can of worms that I will address elsewhere!

Does K have this doc included in newest 4k Aliens?

Aliens Unleashed is an amazing documentary. One of the best I’ve seen for a crown jewel film. Well worth getting the disc and adding it to your Plex!
